Terry Matthews 20 years ago wanted to put an elite Academy at the Celtic Manor for Rugby and Football. I think it would have worked for Rugby but the football i don´t know because our kids are spread out all over England at clubs The geography of Wales being what it is such an idea would not work for north Wales and that area has always punched above it's weight in terms of population to produce players and not just of the calibre of Rush, Ratcliffe, Hughes, Southall but Vaughan, Taylor, Hennessey, OTJ, OFW, ETC. Exporting our players is not in itself a problem though. The Irish, Dutch, Portuguese and Scandinavian countries' entire footballing models are based on it. As was Scotland's but they never realised it or wanted to admit it. We don't need academies at grassroots level. What we do need is good coaching, decent all-year facilities, and a national team and association that is accessible, engaging, relevant and exciting. Let pro clubs over the border do the rest but the players have an affinity and identity with the national team from an early age. I think this is largely in place and we are already benefiting from it. For governing bodies to additionally share expertise and resources such as psychologists, sports scientists, logistics, etc. makes eminent sense in a small country with limited resources

I thought that was our 'Academy'. Like said above me, I think Welsh sport in general could be punching well above it's weight in 15-20 years time if we started sharing the same top sports scientists, psychologists, training facilities etc. today. Imagining a world with Wales being considered an ordinary feature of top-level European competitions in any sport could start here.

Personally I'm lucky enough to be in the Gold Coast for a week and watching at least two sports a day live I don't care about any team GB in any incarnation. I only care about team Wales and the Commonwealth games. Anyone else watching or even here? What's our best medal hopes for day 3?

Excellent result for Gareth Evans. Loved his celebration, donning his Wrexham top.
He's a big fan of the Welsh national side too.

Elinor Barker has won a gold on the track.
To be honest though probably the person with the most interest in The CG is Claire Balding's Agent.

No mention of this in your opening to this thread. Must be missing something. ...So? Apologies, did a long day at work and not at my best since returning from Nanning. Not been well for a number of reasons but still went to work. Miss the Night Food Street in Nanning loads. Enjoy the Gold Coast. Have you been asked for many selfies out there?

Can't really get into this. Good that Wales have their own team but I can't help but think it's just very second rate. I don't like the idea of the commonwealth. Love the Olympics, would love Wales to have it's own team but the Commonwealth lacks a sense of occasion and panache.

I'm not fussed about watching athletics and most of the other events full stop. I don't see any appeal in 95% of them tbh. So I don't really get all the fuss around the olympics - why are so many people so bothered about watching sports they don't bother watching for the 4 years in between? I do take a bit of interest in these games though seeing as Wales are competing, although the whole concept behind the games seem slightly perverse.

I think its the sheep mentality of "You're supposed to like the Olympics" Kind of like why people like Coldplay

I dont know how they can call half of the events sport! Some people parading and dancing on a square is not sport, it might be competition, but its not sport. Neither is dressage or whatever its called, some horse dancing!

Gerwyn is the best player in the world right now frankly. Jonny C was excellent last night.

Congratulations Gerwyn Price on winning especially doing it against that serial moaner Anderson.
To be fair to Price lots of other dart players celebrate loudly like that Van Gerwen.
You have to love Gerwyn's will to win and his passion.
