Started for Charlton today. No sign of him being fouled on the BBC text service.😀 Edit: Fouled in the 58th minute. Maybe he has changed his style of play. This post really says it all, did he score? Create any chances? No is he being fouled

Subbed off after 77 minutes after clicking up 2 further fools. No comment regarding injury.
If not injured, it is a wise substitution for his first start.

I'm half way through watching "Sunderland til I die". Jonny really comes out looking like a top character. If anyone can bounce back from injury, then he surely can.
Welcome back!

Charlton v Portsmouth is live on Sky at 17:30 on 9 March, so a chance to see Joniesta along with Isgrove and Donohue for Portsmouth.
Edit: Not forgetting Chris Maxwell following his move to Charlton.
I wonder if Giggs will be there?

charlton.vitalfootball.co.uk/jonny-williams-on-his-injury-and-contract-talks/It's good to see that Jonny's been playing well since moving to Charlton in January. He should 100% be included in tomorrow's squad, he brings a lot to the table, we're a bit light in midfield and he's clearly better than league 1 standard - the important thing is that he's had a run of games since January!

Damn it all, terrible timing. We're ridiculously light in the middle, surely Lee Evans has to considered... Ampadu Allen Ramsey to start I guess. Edit* Slovakia is 2 weeks away 😂 maybe a 15 minute cameo is on the cards.

He will play more than 5 games again, he's better than a few of the midfielders in the current squad! Invalid. It's injury holding him back, his ability isn't being questioned. Jack Collison was arguably better than any midfielder we've had in the last 10-15 years, apart from Ramsey and Allen perhaps. Sadly ability only gets you so far.

It was 'hes only 19 for goodness sake!' and we have done it every year since. He is now 25 and I can see a thread in 3 years time with someone posting 'he's only 28 for goodness sake!' Time waits for no man and Johnny is no exception. Apparently talking out of turn like this is more a reflection on me ( ) than the naked truth that is staring some in the face. He has slipped through the leagues and is now injured yet again in League 1.

It's not unreasonable to say that the longer a player has a bad injury record the bleaker their long term prospects look, but why make that point? None of us have a crystal ball, and we should all hope for the best and be optimistic - or at the very least not make pointless, negative predictions for the future. It's all rather self-indulgent to be honest. The other thing that get's my goat is how some posters conflate an assessment of ability with their injury history. You'd almost think that Jack Collison's career ended because he was crap, rather than just being terribly unlucky.

Collison was a fantastic midfielder and would of been a top player for us if it wasn't for injury.
He was far better than William's and Huws in my opinion.

I don't agree, but you're entitled to see things differently. What I will say is that Jonny Williams' actual performances for Wales were far better than any by Collison (and for that matter I would say that Huws' performance against the Netherlands was better than any I can recall by Collison for Wales) - although who knows how things had panned out had Collison not been seen so terribly unlucky. As it is all we can do is hope that Williams and Huws both recover. We can certainly do with their quality in the middle of the park to add to the depth of our squad.

What is so self indulgent about being pessimistic about Johnny Williams future in the Wales team? I also did not mention ability or talent in any of these posts. Unless you are Johnny Williams himself, it is impossible for you to be personally offended by my or anyone elses' prediction that we may not see Johnny for Wales much/ if at all. I do not gain anything by being realistic and he was one of my favourite players for Wales. I don't understand your post at all I'm afraid.

It's good that you've clarified that you're not one of those who conflate the entirely separate issues of ability and injury record. As for being pessimistic, I'm not sure that you're necessarily being realistic, unless you have some particular expertise in the sports injury arena. But even if you were, what's the point of making predictions of this nature? It smacks of kicking someone when they're down. If offends my sense of fair play, that's all.

It's just being realistic in my opinion. I'm no expert in sports injuries and perhaps not many of us on here are, but alarch would you agree that Jonny Williams injury record is pretty poor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that both you and cadno are expecting JW to come back from his current League 1 position, and be pushing for place in the Wales starting 11? NB: I would have had him in the current squad if he wasn't injured. I don't see how this is kicking someone when they're down.

145 senior games since 2001 includes 17 international. Most of the games in championship.
3 goals scored.
Hes a tidy player and would of been good for us had he stayed fit but so over rated on here.
Possibly more suited to international football and had a good half against Scotland followed by an excellent game against Croatia.
If he stays fit could get back to championship level but cant see him ever being a regular starter for us, not sure he ever was.
Really hope his body gives him a chance and prove people like Alarch right and we see him in the premiership and major tournaments with us.

Really hope his body gives him a chance and prove people like Alarch right and we see him in the premiership and major tournaments with us. How many senior games have the likes of Ampadu, Smith and Wilson had? And at what level? If games played is an important criterion then Jonny Williams is well ahead of half the Welsh squad. Your point about goals scored is legitimate - but only a fraction of the story. Some players contribute far more than their raw stats suggest This is because stats don't measure everything that's important. For instance. if a player delivers a delicious slide-rule pass that opens up the defence for a winger to cross into the middle of the box and a striker has a simple tap in - the striker gets most of the kudos, the winger gets the assist, but the player who made the key pass has nothing to show statistically for his efforts. Williams has that hard to quantify quality of time on the ball, that comes from excellent technique, balance and speed off the mark. These are great qualities to have in the attacking and middle thirds - and is essential if you want to build a style of team play where the total is greater than the sum of the parts. If you have some players who can play bright one-touch football and others who can't then it's hard to play a possession game. Leon Britton was absolutely essential to the way Swansea played, because of his ability to dictate proceedings - and yet had no assists nor goals in seven seasons in the Premier League. If Williams builds some sustained fitness and game-time I think his best role for Wales would be out wide in a central three. Because of the emergence of the talent we have I wouldn't expect him to be an automatic starter, but a valuable squad player at least. As far as the more advanced positions are concerned then out wide he's going to find it harder to challenge for a place, given the outstanding quality of Brooks and our pacy options in Lawrence, Wilson, James and Matondo, but he could still be useful as a number 10 in a 4-2-3-1 - although Ramsey and Brooks are the strongest two candidates in those positions, and Woodburn will probably push his case down the line as well. It's great to have these options. Who knows how things will pan out for Jonny Williams - but the be all and end all is not his ability, but his fitness. As far as I'm aware he's fully recovered from some serious long-term injuries, with regards to his leg break on Wales U21 duty and the more recent bad shoulder injury - with evidence of the surgery clear on the Netflix Sunderland documentary. The injuries he's been having of late are more the short-term niggling muscle injuries that have plagued Ramsey and Bale. They're not the sort of injuries that are normally career-ending, so there's reason to be hopeful. But until he gains sustained fitness any discussions about what he has to offer club and country are academic. Welshiron, I'm glad you had the graciousness to finish your post with "Really hope his body gives him a chance and prove people like Alarch right and we see him in the premiership and major tournaments with us." Whatever our opinions about the abilities and limitations of the players at our disposal we can all agree that we need as big a pool of options as possible to maximize our chances.
