Narsingh has left, with James as good as gone. Asoro may leave on loan - but at 19 is seen as a long-term prospect. It also wouldn't surprise me if Dyer left. He's got a lucrative year left on this contract, but if another club come in and offer him a longer term deal he may leave sooner rather than later. Swansea would probably be happy for him to leave on a free. In any event Joniesta's versatility is a big factor in his favour. If he stays fit he will be a tremendous asset for whoever he signs for - hopefully Swansea. If we don't want him to play as a 10 why even bother? He's not a winger in the same category as Dyer or DJ. He'll want to play in the same areas Celina, Byers, McBurnie and McKay all prefer. No manager to start thinking about a change of system. Final round of interviews could be starting this week. We're not even down to a definite shortlist yet.

Swansea should be following the Norwich model of appointing a manager to fit the system and the players - not the other way around. Shame Stuart Webber hasn't got a twin brother.

According to some we're too good for him now. Some are wrong.
Underrated.

Despite all the cheer leaders on here no other teams have taken him despite being on a free.

Disappointing but not surprising given the propensity of most Championship clubs to prize physicality over technical ability. Obviously Joniesta's injury record will be a big factor as well. Very disappointed that Swansea haven't signed him - but not surprised given that they have an abundance of choices for the number 10 role in Celina, Byers, McKay and Dhanda.
Still, it's a good chance for Williams to demonstrate his credentials again at a level that puts him in contention for a place in the squad. If he stays injury free he will do well.

I think he'd do well to give up the number 10 role and drop back in midfield, become an Allen 2.0 Could still make all the great passes he does, he'd just be further out of a bruiser defender's reach.

Yup, I've argued this for a while. I think he has the credentials to be a defensive mid in the Leon Britton mould. I doubt that will happen at Charlton, whereas it might have at Swansea.

played 86mins today, got at least one assist and described as 'superb' by the charlton twitter feed! Also had an assist last week, so looks like a really good start to the season!

Another assist today, his fine form continues! What's more, he's starting to rack up 90min games, something he's never done in the past. Has he finally figured out a way to play well, pace himself and keep free of injuries?

A great back up to Ramsey if he continues this way. Fantastic to see him playing regular football.

Was sub in their last game.
An option off the bench but no more than that at the moment.

He was only a sub to manage his game time. Charlton fans have been raving about him. He played well off the bench again. Unsurprisingly, several Charlton fans have referred to him being a class above.
If Ramsey is unfit to start against Azerbaijan Joniesta has to be the in-form option if we go for a 4-2-3-1, or a wide middle three role in a 4-3-3.

If we want to control possession then Ramsey or Joniesta are the best options. Wilson or Lawrence would add more goal threat but at the cost of loss of control. I suspect, as you suggest, that Giggs is less concerned about exerting a stranglehold on the game. Having said that, there's no one better in the Welsh squad for winning free kicks in dangerous positions - and with the set piece ability of Bale, Wilson and Lawrence, that is a significant attribute.

Highlights here: www.skysports.com/football/charlton-vs-brentford/report/409398The way Joniesta won the ball, with a sliding tackle, was as impressive as the assist itself. As I've said many a time, his future could be as a deep-lying midfielder. Charlton fans rated his performance highly again, but most had Lockyear down as MOTM in what a backs to the wall victory for the home side.

Just 31% possession and only 3 attempts on goal versus 22 for Brentford !!

A midfield of Allen, Williams and Ramsey against Azerbaijan would interesting, especially since we will dominate possession. Could free up Ampadu to play CB too.

As I've said many a time, his future could be as a deep-lying midfielder. Likewise, it would keep him clear of bruisers they call centre backs at that level. He'd do well to model/reinvent his game on being Allen 2.0, picking passes from afar and only taking men on when the chips are down. Would avoid so many injuries and give his career some stability he's lacked since he was 20 or so.
