I agree you don't have to have been born in Wales etc to be welsh, but I think what Ash is saying is that he was 'english' until the FAW came knocking. Yes, I read it that way too. Another massive contribution from Flynn to Welsh football in finding him; a similar story with HRK too. It has probably burst a bubble for me. I remember working with someone (one off) in Manchester a few years ago and he was adamant that he knew Ash from their time in Tamworth and that Ash felt Welsh as a kid. I took it at face value and loved the story! But in football terms, does not change my view on Ash! A terrific example to all and I am glad my daughter wanted his name on her Welsh shirt.

There's a special programme on Ashley Williams on BBC Radio Wales at the moment. Features Williams himself, Rio Ferdinand, John Toshack and Joe Allen. I'll try and post a link later.

Its about parental cultural heritage and the blood that flows in your veins. ---------------- So does that mean you think Neil Taylor should be playing for England or India then?! Because that's where his Mam and Dad are from... as far as I'm aware, Taylor has no Welsh blood, but he was born and raised in Ruthin and I'm sure feels as Welsh as anyone when he pulls the red shirt on.
By the same token, I was raised on the Shropshire/Clwyd(as was) border and was mates with loads of kids with Welsh parents, Welsh names etc, who didn't seem to feel in the slightest bit Welsh when it came to football. They all supported England. Loads of them would look at me a bit funny when I said I was going to the Wales game at the Racecourse with my(English)Dad (...'Wales has a football team?!?')
Basically, I agree with walesaway; 'nationality is all about what you define yourself as'...I just wanted to point out that it works both ways...

Ok so the Flynn asked Ash about his heritage just on the off chance but what about Robson Kanu, anyone know how that came about just out of interest? Williams is Welsh but Robson-Kanu is half English, half Nigerian I assume...

Basically, I agree with walesaway; 'nationality is all about what you define yourself as'...I just wanted to point out that it works both ways... Interestingly I chatted briefly to a bloke in Brussels who, when told that I'm from Hereford, asked 'How does that work then?' in a slightly aggressive tone. Maybe I mis-read it but I found it quite odd that someone who would cheer the likes of Robson-Kanu on the pitch would take that tone with me without knowing anything about my family background or my affinity with Wales. My girlfriend was born in Wrexham but was brought up in England and has an English accent, and she gets really fed up with people telling her she can't be Welsh. It bothers me less, but the presumptions people make about the nationality of others is quite interesting.

While all the attention was on Gary Monk and Lukas Fabianski (who made a few good but not great saves) I was not surprised to see the national press score Ashley Williams 6.5 out of 10.
For me though, up against an Arsenal side that has only been shut out at the Emirates once this season (0-0 against Chelsea) and is the form side of the year so far, Williams for me as a captain and an organising centre half was simply outstanding last night.
And seeing this Swansea side finish the game with 3 Welsh defenders and completely frustrate an attacking line up of Ramsey,Cazorla, Ozil, Sanchez, Wilshere and Walcott can only bode well.
Fabianski can enjoy the headlines but for me I quietly smiled at the Welsh resistance. Ashley Williams would grace any of the top four sides for me now.
Cardiff should take note.

Williams made a fantastic block from a Sanchez shot that should have resulted in a corner. When the pundits eventually cottoned onto the fact they didn't give Williams any credit at all. The Arsenal-centricity of the coverage made me laugh. But there's a lot to be said for your players and team going under the radar. Ramsey and Allen can benefit in that regard for Wales.
Most of the class from Arsenal last night came from Ramsey again.

Rumours of Palace being interested in signing him as well as rumours on interest in Richards and davies.
Nearly the complete Welsh backine.

No offence to palace but why would he leave the Swans who are absolutely flying and he's their captain to go to a side who will be probably have to fight to stay up next year?
He won't go anywhere.

No chance. This is code for Ashley Williams to get a new contract. He got one last year. Great time for a renegotiated one then. He captains and plays in defence for a top ten international side that just took 4 points from the second best team in the workd rankings - whilst conceding zero goals to them over 180 minutes.

I can't see that, he's got 3 years left and no doubt is the highest earner at Swansea.

His agent will be targeting a high-point best career contract and Swansea will have to give it to him. Will be sorted in the next couple of months.

He's happy at the Swans and has just signed a new contract, there is no reason for him to move as no big club seems interested. Despite any annoying agent, as club captain he'll be faithful to the club and won't just say he wants out for more money.

His status hasn't massively increased at all. Yes, it has. He is the captain of a now top ten ranked international team. I agree with you. In addition, with Ash a team gets a strong leader, a defender comfortable with the ball, able to mix it physically, consistency and a record of playing well with different types of central defenders. I am amazed that a top four team has not purchased him by now but, obviously, glad that this has not happened.
