Allen scores his first of the season....against Swansea. Ouch! Only saw the first half. The Swans were all over them, playing excellent football, with 5-6 great chances.
James created a few decent chances for himself, but again, lacked the final finishing touch. Conor was very solid and had a couple of great crosses as well.
To be honest, Allen was the best player on the pitch. Played at least five or six superb through-balls, that would have had Bale licking his lips ;-)

There were 2 Stoke players from last season involved in the Liverpool v PSG game.
Said at the time it showed a lack of ambition.

Totally outclassed last night.
His,passing was poor, he was pulled out of position, don't think he won a tackle.
Usually great for us but could see last night why he hasn't made it at a top club in Europe.

Usually great for us but could see last night why he hasn't made it at a top club in Europe. Playing in the Championship is going to hinder his sharpness and will see him lose out when playing against top class opposition. He needs absolutely to be back in the Premier league as do all the ones that can play at that level. I don't buy into this 'if he's good enough it doesn't matter what level he plays'. It certainly does matter.

Joe Allen has stolen a living. Championship player at best. Would a player like Messi, Hadji or even John Cornforth gave passed backwards as many times as he did last night. He went to Liverpool and couldn't get in the team after Rodgers went.

He went to Liverpool and couldn't get in the team after Rodgers went. Utter bollocks. I imagine you've just started following Wales recently - if not you must be clueless. Allen had a poor game for sure - got caught in possession a couple of times, which is unlike him. But his positional play was fine. The biggest problem he and Ampadu faced was being outnumbered in midfield. With our wing backs being pegged back continually, Spain always had an overload in front of our back five. So, Ampadu and Allen were continually being pulled left and right and could only screen forward passes at best. Allen wasn't to blame for any of the three goals in the first half - in fact, if Wilson hadn't intervened, with his perfect assist for the third, Allen would have hooked the ball clear. People are understandably disappointed after last night, but looking for scapegoats is unworthy. Allen remains a class act and he'll come again in a Welsh shirt.

Joe Allen at his best is one of the best, if not THE best carrilero's in the world. However, the last 6 months have seen him fall of a cliff bigger than Ash has.
I saw him in April and he was a shining light for Stoke v Burnley. However we have to now consider if being in the Championship has destroyed him.
He did ok in the double-header, but at club level a Stoke friend of mine who is as high on Allen as I am has been spotlighting him as a passenger in a sinking ship and regularly the worst player in the team. Other than being in the right place at the right time for the goal against the Swans, I would have to agree based on the games I have seen them on Sky.
Last night he looked lost at times and the big thing that struck me was how often he seemed to get the ball stuck under his feet, which is the complete opposite of what you expect from him.
It's worrying because we can't afford to have world class players (of who he truly is at what he does) drop off the face of the earth at such an early age like it worryingly appears he might do.

I'm afraid life in the championship is taking it's toll on Allen's game. He has lost a bit of sharpness and vision. I'm quite surprised, as I always thought he was such a consistent performer, even as a bench warmer for Liverpool.
Frustrating to see when we know he is capable of much better.

constructive criticism is fine but the above poster clearly went OTT
my favourite ever welsh player and im a cardiff fan
And that's not favouritism for the past, what do you expect playing spain with their midfield haha.
He hasn't always turned it on since leaving swansea has he? So he can still do it for us if it isnt going tickety-boo at the club

Yes, he isn't at his best at the moment, but come on, this is more than a tad over-the-top. He had a good game against Ireland first time out (forgotten his beautifully judged slide-rule pass for the opener already?) - no reason he can't do well again. Although, in the likely absence of Ampadu, he may have a more restricted, defensive role.

He did nothing at Liverpool, and could only secure a move to Stoke.
The Premier League released graphics recently of every midfielders most done passes and for Joe Allen it was from the back end of the centre circle to the left back and right back position.
Yes he keeps possession but always passes backwards! Try watching him in the next game! All true football people have sussed him out, that's why no big club wanted him, despite the cut down price tag. He only went to Stoke because of the Mark Hughes connection.
I'm not looking for scapegoats for last night, I've always thought this, and have seen him play since a youngster.

Well I was in the same school as him, and he used to get rave reviews from all sorts of Swansea fans, tipping him to be their greatest player of all time etc. He probably would've if Brendan hadn't pinched him.

Nothing annoys me more than when people complain about 'too much backward passing'. It's such an english attitude and instantly tells me you don't know what you're taliking about. I've probably watched 90% of our home games in the last 20 years and Spain last night were the best team Ive seen live. They were technically incredible and were masters on the ball - precisely because they didn't mind how much they passed it backwards or side to side.

Normal service resumed last night with Allen keeping things ticking over in midfield. Not only that, I was also impressed with his turn of pace in beating players - to get the team moving forward. We don't often see that from him as it's normally down to the likes of Bale, Brooks, Lawrence etc. But last night he went past quite a few Irish midfielders. A joy to watch.

Yeah, he got another ball stuck underneath his feet very early on which had me worried but from that moment on, somewhat back to his best.

Has anyone seen that Stoke side? How the hell are they not 'tearing it up': Butland Pieters, Martins Indi, Williams, Martina McClean Woods, Allen, Ince Berahino Afobe
All internationals or ex England U21's and on paper a comfortable mid table Premiership side.

I was glad to see the back of Rowett when he left Derby. His tactics are too negative and sets out to not lose rather than setting out to win.
