Sorry it's clear as day that Gunter is the best back up to Roberts, Gunts is as good a defender, but not as good going forward.

It's important to remember that most of our 'old guard' are still 30 or under, are in no way 'past it', and still have plenty to offer.
The only one-time regular players we have over 30 and available for selection really are Ashley, Ledley and Hennessey. The rest - Bale, Allen, Gunter, Chester, Taylor, King, Vokes, Chester - are still only 29/30. Ramsey still only 28.
We seem to have a bit of a 'lost generation' after that until we get to the current youngsters, with only Ben Davies seemingly having truly established himself. The rest of his age group (Ward, Jonny, Emyr Huws, Tom Lawrence, perhaps even Adam Matthews and Jazz Richards, who are a bit older) are there-or-thereabouts without truly having stepped up. It's telling that we often mention Davies in the same breath as the older players, as he has already been around a long time!
All our 'old guard', except Ashley and Ledley, could well have another good 5 years in them. They are decent, experienced players, and are very likely to outlast Giggs' reign.

just when you think you've seen absolutely everything on here, someone turns around and knocks Chris Gunter for getting a cap in a friendly match, wow wee! If the next 4/5 are given to him in the same fashion you cannot take away how good a servant he has been to Welsh Football over the last 20 odd years. Remember not so long ago where was some stat about his appearances over a period of time which I doubt has even been closely matched in the international game. If he won his first 5 in that fashion nobody would bat an eyelid!

I'm not writing Gunter off yet. He is a better defender than Roberts but doesnt offer as much going forward. If he was playing atcthe moment I would probably pick him ahead of Roberts in October especially if Rodon and Mepham are the centre halves I think we've got enough on offer going forward, defending is our problem & Roberts positioning is a liability at times - any competent winger would eat Roberts for breakfast with the space he leaves open. Bring Chris back into the fold to get some stability at the back.

Fact is Gunter has kept Hazard quiet on several occasions, whereas Roberts on current form would allow a team of farmers to create dangerous chances with his lack of positional awareness.

I'm a big Roberts fan, but Gunter isn't a bad defender!

I'm a big Roberts fan, but Gunter isn't a bad defender! I'm sure Roberts will come good in a few years, but he's too naive at the moment for international football, in addition to that we're struggling to defend and already have enough attacking talent in the team.

Fact is Gunter has kept Hazard quiet on several occasions, whereas Roberts on current form would allow a team of farmers to create dangerous chances with his lack of positional awareness. So did Jazz Richards but that was in solid team performances where our only method of attack was giving it to Bale and hoping he can nick a solo goal. "Fact is" Roberts is part of one of the best defences in the Championship while Gunter isn't wanted at a bottom half side.

This is due to Yiadom picking up five bookings, so possibly in for just this game.

Great achievement all in the championship or premiership.
Wonder how many welsh players have done that in the top 2 leagues?

Class defender, average going forward! He would be in my Xi ahead of Roberts atm. Really?! There's not much in it, but if it's a back against the wall type of game, we know Gunter would give a solid performance. To be fair, Roberts hasn't let us down either, except maybe when he was matched up against Peresic out in Croatia, but the midfield offered almost no help that day and our daft tactics left us exposed down that side of the pitch. If it's a counter-attacking game, Roberts makes the 11, if we're asked to defend a bit more, I think Gunter would be my choice atm.

I love Gunter but he's so far off Roberts. Roberts has improved massively defensively and is such a threat going forward. Gunter is solid but isn't getting much first team football at all. No contest for me.

If you watch the Euro 2016 games back, Taylor and Gunter's contribution going forward was actually very good, crossing was decent etc. The insurance of having 3 center halves allowed them to venture forward a bit more I suppose, whereas they're not as good going forward when in a back 4 (Gunter more than Taylor)... I guess Roberts and Davies are clearly the better balanced full backs for a back 4. At least we're not lacking in choice, with Jazz, Fox, Matthews and others in line too.
