Chelsea have been slapped with a two window transfer ban. Naughty boys. Young Ethan may well get some game time next season. Don't hold your breath though. Does that in include loans out to?

Should help his game time in the long-run. What will also help is that he's being tried out in a number of positions. When he appeared late on last night it was as a right back. Versatility is great in internationals - given the inevitable unevenness of talent across the positions.
Unfortunately for us last night's cameo could well be his last this season, barring a run of injuries or a few dead rubber games at the end of the season.

Talk Sport were specifically saying that they imagine a recall for your Frankie as well as the two loanees. Thank the lord that you had the foresight to snap up our Tom for the bargain £7m when you did ;-)

Just listened to Gareth Southgate on Sky Sports talking about the Declan Rice situation where he has applied to have his nationality switched to England and he says something odd about Ampadu He was talking about players transferring allegiance and he quotes-
‘When you are asking a player to transfer association you have to make it very clear that he has a future with you. If you look at our junior groups now, over 50% have got dual nationality and some can play for more than two countries. Once players have been capped very young then it becomes a very complex situation. In some of those situations we’ve had players transferred to us and in other situations we’ve had players like Iwobi, Zaha and Ampadu who have gone the other way’
I thought it strange he used Ampadu in the same vein as Rice, Iwobi and Zaha who went all the way through the age groups with one country, even making senior appearances, before switching at the last minute.
Other than a single youth appearance for England when he was 14 or 15, he was with Wales all the way through to making his senior appearances.
Maybe they see Ampadu as one who really slipped the net who will be a big loss to them

Just listened to Gareth Southgate on Sky Sports talking about the Declan Rice situation where he has applied to have his nationality switched to England and he says something odd about Ampadu ... Maybe they see Ampadu as one who really slipped the net who will be a big loss to them I'm sure they do, however I'm more interested in this bit from Southgate: " We've tracked him (Rice) for quite a while, I think they're really big decisions when you're asking a player to transfer Associations, you've got to be very clear you feel they have a future with you. That said there were never any guarantees made to him because I think that was also important, you've got to be playing well to get into the squad." I'm staggered no-one's made more of this. I'm pretty much in line with Aluko's recent article that it is a complex issue, that young players can choose to play for one association as kids before having a change of heart when they reach adulthood. We need to be open-minded and learn to accept this is a part of modern football. Its always a risk when you work with and develop dual-qualified players, that another association may benefit from your hard work if that kid has a change of heart years down the line. I was under the impression that this was what happened with Rice, he was a conflicted young man of dual nationality that decided his heart lay with England (as has been widely reported) a completely understandable situation, just like Rhys Williams and Lloyd Jones with us...bad luck for the RoI but hey, such is life. However this now evidently wasn't the case at all...the FA poached him, they approached him and turned his head just like they did with Grealish, and attempted to do with Ampadu (along with the other 6 kids they attempted to poach under our noses a few years ago!). Why are you tracking other Associations' players Gareth?! To me there's a massive difference between being the recipient of good luck and having another nation's player declare for you of their own free will, and having another FA approach your player (who's had zero input into his development and growth) and proceed to turn his head in order to take advantage of your years of hard work and dedication. I'm not wholly surprised in all honesty, albeit unexpected that they'd be so brazen and open about it. However I'm also proud that we have a pathway that's so strong we can let them play their little games and be wholly confident that our kids will want to stay regardless! The English FA are a bunch of thieves and its blatantly obvious they see nothing wrong with this. The message is therefore clear, there is no gentleman's agreement...its open season! They're never to be trusted!

They're never to be trusted! Yeh good post Texan. I agree with this and what made me angry was when he said something like 'there are others on our radar but it didn't feel like the right time to approach them'. When is the right time to steal someone? If Grealish or Rice had approached them and said 'I feel English I want to sign up', then totally different story. The agents are involved in this too I'm sure and the club chairmen.

Ampadu not even in the squad tonight for Chelsea's nothing game against Dynamo Kiev.

In the Elis James podcast Ryan spoke about only one position that he is not quite sure of - and surely it must be the Smith/Ampadu one?
The way Giggs spoke of Matt might indicate that the shirt is Smith's to lose?

Brooks and HRK were playing for England before us, and I think Matondo appeared for them before Wales also so I think we're benefiting more from this association switching than we have lost in the case of Williams, Jones and Bond so hardly worth getting too outraged about.Brennan Johnson is another one at youth level recently

None of the players you mention were targeted by another FA (other than Matondo!), they decided to switch of their own accord which is fair enough. HRK played 1 friendly for England U20's before never being picked again, 10 months later a chance chat at Reading's training ground opened up a conversation with Flynn. Brooks hadn't been involved at any age grade with any association from what I could see, both the FA and FAW approached him simultaneously(ish) in 2017. Matondo on the other hand was one of a clutch of players (which also included Woodburn) approached by the FA whilst already connected to/playing for the Wales U15's system. They went to an England training camp and played a behind-closed-doors friendly. Williams, Jones and Bond left for Australia & England respectively of their own free will however. Rice on the other hand was an established RoI international of 5 years standing that England actively pursued once he'd shown real promise. For me there's a clear moral line between a player deciding they want to switch as as a result of how they feel, and an association actively pursuing them in an attempt to influence them to switch. It's a line that England is increasingly and repeatedly crossing.

Wasn't there was a lot of confusion around the Brooks situation in terms of call ups?

Wasn't there was a lot of confusion around the Brooks situation in terms of call ups? Yes, bit of a car crash really...completely Robert Page and his team's fault. Apparently Brooks had been hoping for a Wales call-up for ages with nothing doing, however just prior to the Toulon Tournament squad announcement (mere days from what I understand) England contact him and say they'd like to name him in the squad. With no Wales call-ups on the horizon Brooks accepts and is told he'll be named in the squad on 16/05/17, however on that day 11 mins before the FA announce the squad Wales announce theirs...with Brooks in it! To be fair to the lad he honoured his promise to England by withdrawing from the Welsh squad, however after Toulon he knew Wales (his preferred choice) actually WERE interested in him so he immediately accepted the 2nd call-up from Page that August. Basically Page had always intended to call Brooks up...just that he never bothered to tell him in advance! It was Page's 1st squad announcement I believe and he probably wasn't aware of the etiquette...bet he bloody is now though lol! Hell of a way to learn the hard way the importance of good admin!

Robert Page and Paul Bodin strike me as guys that don't work hard enough in their jobs. There have been countless issues that I have spotted from the outside, god knows what it's like on the inside. I think we need another Flynn to take us to the next level.

Ampadu to start for me. He is a much better player than Smith. The only way Ethan is starting, is in defence, as a CB. Smith is the third name on the team sheet, for me. Just behind Rambo and Bale. Just ahead of Brooks.
He will surprise many of us on Sunday ;-)

Smith is playing at league 1/2 standard in Holland. Ampadu is training with world class players.
They are both great prospects but I would wager big money that Ampadu will have a much better career and win more caps.
Ampadu to start for me all day long.

That's a hell of a statement on Smith. What about Allen and Ben Davies?

So Ampadu is out of the Slovakia game with a back strain attributed to a lack of playing time and growing pains.
We’ll have to assume the same could happen for the June double header. Starting to look a bit light in the middle unfortunately.
