On the bench for the first game of the season.

On the bench for the first game of the season. Unfortunately just an unused sub. But very promising to see him on the bench at all. Assuming that Dayot Upamecano stays injured, Ethan should get minutes soon enough!

Today Ethan is not even in the match-day squad. As Matthew Smith is also getting very few minutes, perhaps there is indeed a place for Jonny in our starting 11?
EDIT
Fox Sport German reporter confirming Ethan is NOT injured :-))

On then bench is 'very promising'? That was ten days ago, when we were all still fearing that he was still carrying an injury. Unfortunately, last week, Ethan hasn't even made the 20-man bench, despite assurances from the Fox reporters that he is no longer injured.
Nonetheless, Ethan has shown in June that he can play a part for us, even if not match fit.

Leipzig are flying at the moment so can’t see him getting in the team anytime soon unfortunately.

He may be fit enough to play, but not yet up to speed enough to push the current starters. If his competition have started well too, then the bedding in process may take a little longer for first team football. No need to panic about his minutes yet. I'm sure time with us will help too.

It looks like Ethan has finally made it into the match-day squad. If he plays, it is live on BT Sport from 7.30pm

His early years are ticking away with still no real football to speak of.

His early years are ticking away with still no real football to speak of. Dramatic. He's still only 18. How many minutes of senior football had Brooks, James & Wilson earned by then? How about Harry Kane?

Suggesting that he won't be because he's not yet established at Chelsea at the age of 18 is very reactionary.

Should have gone to a good championship side, like wot I dun said. That was what we all said last year about Woodburn - and that didn't work out either. On the flip side of this, Ben has already got 500 minutes in league one with rave reviews, at Oxford.
I imagine that a very intelligent player like Ethan will learn plenty from a coach like David Wagner, in the same way that Ben must have gained from 4 months with Chris Wilder.
At 18 they must be like a sponge.

Nagelsmann is Leipzig manager, Wagner is at Schalke

Wikipedia page on Nagelsmann is not that reassuring ;-(

RB Leipzig are a far better side than Chelsea atm, so it shouldn't be too surprising to see him not walking straight into the team. I think you lot should think of this move as part of his footballing education. Like Manulike said he'll probably learn loads, even if he doesn't get as many games as you'd like.

His youth showed Friday night. Clearly talented but he could do with concentrating on his own positional play instead of pointing where others should be. Must annoy some of his team mates as well.

I said this here in the last international break. He’s continuously pointing around at his team mates for no reason; I just get the impression he’s thinking about how looks on t.v. and trying to look like a young leader and playmaker to viewers sometimes rather then just playing the game. I too think that the other players must want to shout at him to focus on what he’s doing as they don’t need telling to pass to the open player whose 5 yards away.

He's showing leadership and getting pelters for it. 😂 Unbelievable.
It's not aimless pointing and it's not for the TV, he's dictating play or attempting to.
He should be admired and encouraged to keep doing it.

In any event he didn't do that too much on Friday - perhaps he should have done more of it! He played a few loose passes but it was another solid performance having watched the match again.

He plays every minute like a tired 30+ year old. Directing traffic while avoiding the ball and dropping into defence to let centre halves play football. Commentators nod appreciatively at this astonishing maturity and leadership and wonder why scouts passed him over for "not taking enough touches" at youth levels.
Few snappy tackles and fouls getting fans off their seats. Just a teenage Jay Fulton at the end of the day.

I'm amazed an 18 year old with zero experience is being criticized already!
What are we English?
Give the lad a chance to develop. Even if he doesn't become world class and plays as a premier league player for most of his career, he'll be worth his weight in gold to us.
