some info about stadium
Stadion Gradski vrt or The City Garden Stadium in English is a football stadium located in the fourth largest city in Croatia, Osijek. First opened in 1980, the ground has undergone several renovations over the year such as in 2005 and 2010 to bring it up to its current capacity of 22,050.

Staying in Zagreb and watching in a bar sounds quite a nice plan if we can’t get tickets

It was a sh-t hole but you can see why they play there as it is a hostile environment even down to the tank!!
Have they put a roof on the away end now then?

When I was there last it was 40c and my sandals were almost melting ;-( Good job that there were dozens of ice cream shops in town ;-)

They must be fucking rolling in money since their Euros & World Cup adventures. Can't they build a decent national stadium somewhere nice, rather than play in some shithole that looks like it was bombed out in the Yugoslav wars?

Will our passports still be valid if the British drag us out of the EU with no deal?

It doesn't just look like it was bombed out in the Balkan conflict, it was.

On the positive side, it's less than three hours on the road from Osijek to Budapest if you're doing the double-header.

On the positive side, it's less than three hours on the road from Osijek to Budapest if you're doing the double-header. Although it seems that the public transport options are pretty limited. The Osijek to Budapest train seems to virtually go all the way back to Zagreb. There is a Flixbus, but apart from that it seems like you have to hire a car or taxi. I was hoping to go via Pecs. There doesn't seem to be any buses that do the 45 minute journey and the trains seem a nightmare.

Same here- I've been looking at the map and picking Cities in Hungary as a possible stopover on the way to Budapest but there's nothing direct to any apart from the flixbus. I cant seem to find out where this stops or if it's just direct to Budapest. Looked at a hire car, but its not really a viable option as I'm flying home from Budapest and there's a €375 drop off in a different country fee.

I've got a Hungarian friend and she tells me that two main sightseeing places in the south of Hungary are (1) Badascony / Lake Balaton which means heading towards Zagreb or (2) Pecs (Unesco Heritage Town) and then there are roads which follow the Danube up to Budapest. I'm struggling to figure out how to do the short hop from Osijek to Pecs! If I find a way I will post on here! The Flixbus was direct to Budapest (and seems to have sold out now).

Siofok was my original choice, but that was from Zagreb. Was looking at possibly Pecs or Szegad from Osijek. I did book that Flixbus earlier. Would rather have a stop off though. Have you seen the advert on the travel page about a coach from Osijek to Budapest? Not heard of the company but an option for those staying in Osijek.

DIRECT TRAIN FROM OSIJEK TO PECS
I just found out that there is a brand new 4X daily DIRECT train to Pécs - started December 2018.
Pecs is a UNESCO World Heritage site ;-)
The journey, including a 30 minutes stop at the border, takes 2'30'' costing 25 kn (£3). The most practical is a 10:12 departure arriving Pecs at 12:42. The next one departs Osijek at 13:20 ...
From Pécs there are at least 9 express trains daily to Budapest Kelenföld and Deli stations - taking only 3 hours / 4300 fl / £12.
If you prefer the train, but want to skip Pecs there is an onward Express train at 13:10 arriving to Kelenfold at 16:20 - so total travel time of just over six hours.
