Why no Brennan in the squad? Injured

Ange Postecoglou "Brennan Johnson was close but he's not quite 100%, with the international break we're hoping he'll get that time to be available straight after."
Maybe he wouldn't be fit for our games, although from these comments it sounds like could have been.

Unsure why Pagey’s bottled it in this regard yet again.

This has a touch of "it's only a friendly, don't risk it" about it which could be a slight concern in the future if we haven't qualified for a tournament and there's games left, what we need is consistency and familiarity. Hopefully there's nothing in this.

Think this is the way with Jonson now. Always the risk when a player moves to a bigger club. Trouble is it can mess up the momentum of an average international team like us, disrupt us and stop us from qualifying for things

Yeah I think this is just the reality in football. Injuries are not as black and white as injured / not injured. He's not fully fit, he's in the process of settling in to a new club after a massive move, and they probably want to work with him over that period and get him right for the remainder of the season. I'm pretty sure that he could have been available for Croatia (albeit not fully fit), but he probably just wants to prioritise getting himself right for Spurs first and avoid jeopardising that through aggravating something whilst away with us. He still has everything to prove to the club and the fanbase, so all of these things are considered - it's about fitness, commitment, and the player - club leverage / power dynamics. I don't like it, but I understand why he would prioritise making a success of the move at this time. Hopefully once he's proven himself at Tottenham, he can then be more assertive and prioritise Wales and show up even when carrying niggly injuries.

Seems strange when you compare it to England calling Stones up who has not kicked a ball for 2 months and have the best manager in the world stating he will not play this week but still prepared to let his player go on international duty. Is it that Page might not have that much respect in the game as he has not managed at the top level so he feels he is unable to ask the hard questions ?

Will it ever be possible for a player to be accepted as actually being injured and not ready in time to play for us, but recover in time for their club a week later?
Players often play for their club one week, miss a few games for their club with a small injury, then play for their club again the week after. Sometimes those injuries fall on international week.
I was thinking this the other week. After an Arsenal game, Arteta said that Martinelli would miss the midweek game but would be back for the following weekend. I remember thinking to myself imagine what it would have been like if Martinelli had been Welsh and the midweek game he missed that that week was for us,these pages would be in meltdown. Yet playing for his club on Saturday, injured for midweek, then available for the next weekend barely raises an eyebrow in football circles because it’s so common.

Not seeking to cause any trouble here (I'll probably regret posting this), but I think it's pretty clear that Brennan could have played on Sunday if he / the club were prepared to. Obviously he's been carrying a knock, as footballers almost always are, but the fact that he's had a couple of solid weeks of training suggest that he probably was fit enough to play against Croatia. The way that Postecoglou has phrased his system almost makes it sound like it was the plan to keep Brennan back to work with him on certain things, so again suggesting if he really wanted to play and the club were willing, he could have made it. www.tottenhamhotspur.com/news/2023/october/team-news-ange-on-romero-johnson-and-bentancur-spurs-vs-fulham/I'm not really that bothered by it. All footballers have different levels of attachment to their club and national sides. Brennan still hasn't really been able to become an important player for us, despite being the most highly valued player that we can select. He's been left out of the side many times, including at the world cup, so he may feel slightly aggrieved. I get the impression that he likes playing for Wales and is committed, but when he feels the need to prioritise his club or his own development he'll do that, even if it means letting us down. He's joined a new club for a massive fee, got injured straight after joining, and has a battle on his hands to prove his fitness and show what he can do at Spurs. I'm not too fussed that he (or perhaps the club) made that choice rather than playing for us only 80-90% fit. Don't get me wrong, if he was a crucial player I'd be a lot more upset (perhaps unfairly), but to be honest it probably helped us in this last window otherwise Page would have felt the pressure to start him. It does pose another headache going forward though. I think he can contribute in the next window, although personally would want him to have more of an impact sub role. The risk is that he throws his toys out of the pram (perhaps he's done that to a small extent already) and so the situation gets worse where he never properly establishes himself in a Welsh shirt. There's a risk of it becoming a bit of a catch-22 - where he doesn't properly do it for us because his heart may not be fully in it (perhaps aided by those grievances), and so we never embed him as a crucial part of the team, thus fuelling further grievances.

Well he's played himself off the pitch on to the bench hasn't he!
We need hard workers in these 2 games - players prepared to run back. As we know this is one of the weaknesses of his game.
I can't see how you can drop any of the forwards/attacking midfielders who did so well for us over the last 2 qualifiers for him Good option to have as an impact player though!

He may have been back in training, but I doubt if it was at full pelt in the runup to the Wales game. The hamstring would also require stress testing at match performance level, and he will have had an extra 8 days before the Fulham game.

There is no evidence to suggest Johnson was fit enough to play last Sunday. Exactly, just because he’s fit enough to train a week ago it doesn’t mean he’s 100% ready to go. Being able to train and being able to play in a full international are two very different things.

Brennan is on the bench tonight's London derby, and Harry Wilson is on the bench for Fulham. No sign of Ben Davies though.

Starts on the left, whereas James has been playing on the right for Leeds. Gives us options for switching sides mid game.

Unlucky not to get an assist owing to offside, before being hooked because of the Romero red card.

Unlucky not to get an assist owing to offside, before being hooked because of the Romero red card. Spurs were in full control until a moment of madness, followed by some bizarre injuries. It was a bad day at the office, and their manager was fuming at the end.

Should have a good run in the starting line-up at Spurs now with Richarlison due to have surgery. Time for him to shine and make the position his.

Looks like Maddison will miss a significant amount of time through injury now too. Big opportunity for Brennan to make himself a focal point of Spurs' attack now. There'll probably be a lot of pressure on him to contribute, so could be make or break!
