If Roberts and Neco are playing we can afford to have 2 sitting midfielders in the middle. Hennessey Mepham Rodon Davies Roberts Allen Ampadu Neco Bale James Ramsey There's obviously cases to be made for a lot of players but sometimes they have to grab the opportunity off the bench. Random question but when was the last time we subbed on a match winner? Again, playing with a front 3 will go back to using a false 9, and move away from the successful 2 split-striker system we've deployed in the last 4 games. We've never convinced with a false 9, James has been very inconsistent there for Leeds. He's so much more effective as a split striker, it suits bale and Johnson too, and I think Ramsey's more effective slightly deeper as an 8 too. So it's a no-brainer for me. 532. Yeah play Ramsey slightly deeper. Formations in my view are slightly outdated anyway as its more their role within the formation in attack and defence that matter. Man City pushing their fullbacks into Central midfield for example.

I thought Johnny Williams against Finland but I'm guessing he started that game...

No prediction thread Gents?
Can't make it Thursday, but I have a horrible feeling it's going to go pear shaped.

Ben Woodburn against Austria was late 2017. Bloody hell, that far back? Real shame he hasn't kicked on at all since then. Maybe I was naive, but I thought he was going to be the next big Welsh star.

Austria seem to be favourites with all the bookies despite our home advantage and being higher in the rankings.
Come on boys, let's see this through!

Neco to score the opener, an own goal to follow from a Dan James cross in a 2-0 win that takes the roof off

Yesterday the only odds checker I checked Wales were slight favourites. This one is tight. Wales got to score in first 25 mins.

This has to go down as one of the biggest if not the biggest qualifier in my lifetime.
We have to keep our heads no silly mistakes/bookings early on.

Interesting that Cabango misses out (less so Vaulks). On paper leaves us light at CB imo. May mean a back 4, or Amps in defence with Levitt in midfield.

There hasn't been much mention of arnautovic....can score from anything I'll be honest, I didn't want to mention him because I didn't want to think about him! He's exactly the kind of player that bursts balloons on these kind of occasions and absolutely revel in it. I would fancy a fully fit and focused Rodon, in a Wales shirt, to be able to deal with him these days but I think we might need Ampadu on him tonight, especially as he seems to be able to take it and give just as good back with physical types.

I expected Rabbi to miss out instead of Cabango tbh. We need as much height as possible at the back, they’ve Arnie and that 6 foot 7 bloke. For me, Amps is too small at 6 foot for this game, particularly as Davies is also 6 foot.

From what I've seen of Cabango this season I wouldn't trust him in a game of this magnitude, he's too easily beaten and his decision making needs to improve drastically, he's going backwards under Martin and until that's addressed I don't want it jeopardising our chances.

Cabango was never going to play anyway. Back three will be Mepham - Rodon - Davies
Ampadu possibly in midfield or instead of Mepham.
My guess would be
Roberts - Mepham - Rodon - Davies - Neco
Allen - Ampadu
Ramsey
Bale - James

If anyone thinks this will be a 2 goal win they are forgetting how much torture it is to be a Wales fan at times. I'd say its more likely to be 1-0 in the first 10 minutes and have to agonisingly panic everytime a ball comes into the Wales box for 80 minutes... with us struggling to get out of our own half for the last 10.
I'm not going to predict a scoreline but I think if there's a comfortable win in the game it'll be 2-0 Austria. If Wales are going to win you'll be able to ring the sweat out of your shirt at the end of the match. No chance are we going to be able to enjoy this.

Pardon my memory lapse again!!! But is there VAR in these play offs? Yes So all those Mepham moments where we breathe a sigh of relief that there's no VAR will be reviewed countless times. Christ.

He's the type of player who can settle these matches too in the same way Bale does on the big occasions for Wales. Hopefully if he's not getting the service he'll turn on his own team early on.

I'm having visions. Absolutely he is the type of player to silent the crowd. Not sure how good he still is but unfortunately probably has a turn & a wallop in him. Ampadu is a good shout but lets hope it doesn't get too physical!. If wales come out firing on all cylinders then we won't know he is on the pitch. if it's a tight game 80+ minutes..................................

That was the first proper Wales game I watched, it’s fair to say World Cup qualification has become something of a holy grail for me ever since! But this time round it’s tempered by being in such a bloody awful location at a bloody awful time of year!

Yeah spot on, he played that role expertly in our 2-2 draw in Austria, it was like he was on a personal mission to piss on our chips that night.

I can still picture that Russia goal perfectly in my head.
