There were some news article towards the end of last week stating that the Cruise ships would be from £ 150 a night - all inclusive. Even ignoring the all inclusive bit and assuming for that you get an inside cabin, it didn't seem to bad. Or was it just uninformed press speculation. I realise you've still got to get there.

I can see a lot of fans saying that they’re not going ‘on moral grounds’ when the reality is that it’s miles out of most of our budgets. Trip of a lifetime though... hopefully! My idea was to get flight to Dubai and then hire a car and drive to Qatar? Any thoughts on this as I found fairly cheap flights to Dubai around W/C time - maybe a third of the price of Qatar? Thinking of basing ourselves in Dubai and staying in Qatar for a couple of nights.

With respect I think you’re looking at it squarely from your own outlook for what you can reasonably afford. The cost of living squeeze will mean that there will be many for whom £150 for a ~14(?) night cruise + flight and tickets ($$$), spending money around the stadium etc. will have gone from affordable in November 2021 to put of the question by January 2022 and this squeeze ain’t going away. In fact, musing aloud in the squeeze and with the U.K. government sat on its hands compared to the action taken by the likes of Belgium and France we’re likely to have the almost comical tragedy of millions of people choosing whether to heat or eat whilst an ostentatious display of consumption takes place in a state funded by fat energy profits in a competition competed for by millionaires. And the opportunity to exploit this for political capital (on top of the deaths involved) is not going to be missed. Guaranteed. What awful timing for a Qatar World Cup!

Haven't done an awful lot of research on this, but was also thinking that Dubai was probably a good place to act as a base. It gave the option of a 1hr flight or a 6hr car. Cheaper accommodation and things to do on non-match days. Did also think about Mumbai as well. Plenty of water to go under the bridge before we can start really thinking about it though....

With you all the way on this Welshram but just to give the other posters the heads up, apparently, flights from Dubai to Qatar are to be priced at around AED 9,000...! (around 1,800 quid...!! Scandalous if true). I'm sure that Dubai Welsh Football Supporters Club will provide the answers and/or solutions when the time comes!

When I looked on sky scanner last week I could see they were generally north of a grand and that's before there's any fixture dates. If the land route through Saudi is feasible then Dubai or Abu Dhabi could be a viable accommodation option but the political will to deal with Qatar is so intrenched you'd have to worry that the slightest incident and your stuck 200 miles away unable to get to the game. Bahrain should be another option, in fact given its proximity it would be ideal. It could be less than an hour by ferry, one has been planned for years but little sign of it ever getting off the ground. Currently there's not even direct flights between Doha and Bahrain.

It's stuff like this (let alone all the human rights issues!) which makes Qatar even more of a basket case location for a World Cup.

Pity you couldn't sell your soul to pay for it but i guess anyone that goes to this doesn't own one anyway.

Potentially the only chance I'll get in my life to see Wales at a world cup. Is it the destination I'd have chosen? Of course not. But I'm not going to feel guilty about it.

My having no soul comment was kinda tounge in cheek,of course any welsh fan would go if they could afford it,just makes me sad how money trumps morals in the choosing of where all these sporting events have been held for years, such is the world we live in i guess.Would be amazing too show these people if nobody turned up to these events but then fans want to go don't they, and that's why we will always be walked over.

In all honesty I don't think it will do well in terms of foreign fans going anyway. Questionable location, costs a fortune to get to and when you're there, and it's just before Christmas. Most fans will have a hard time justifying it with their families. Whoever does get there shouldn't have any trouble for tickets.

Doesn't really matter anyway, they will just pay locals to wave flags of countries they could not find on a map, just winds me up how money is buying everything and it is so obvious, don't know why i am so wound up but hey welcome to the new world, nevermind fans just feel the wallet,in my mind it just would have been nice if all european fans got together and said fuck it we have had enough and we are not going, but then these things cost so much only these countries will be able to afford it before long, like the boxing, depressing but hey there we go,lets just ignore that.

I won't be making any attempt to purchase World cup match day tickets for November, let alone be heading to Quatar.
Don't think many football followers were pleased to see Quatar host the the World cup.
Now the gutless FIFA, want Russia to compete in the World cup in any name FIFA thinks it will suit FIFA.
I am even Considering reducing the amount of items I purchase from the World cup sponsors.

Let's be honest, following your team at a World Cup has largely been a middle-class pursuit for the past 20 years or so.

The only tournaments the working class would be able to enjoy en-masse are either going to be in the UK, or a ferry ride to France, Belgium or the Netherlands. Even Spain/Portugal would be quite pricey.

Has anyone had a tentative look yet? On booking.com, trivago etc there is zero accommodation left during the week of the first round games that I can see in the whole of Qatar......

You can only book accommodation in Qatar through FIFA and this can only be done once you have tickets.

Your best bet is Abu Dhabi which is a lot more accessible for flights and plenty of hotels etc. lots of western style bars with happy hours to keep the costs down.
Plus it’s a lot nearer to Qatar than Dubai is.

The flights between Abu Dhabi and Qatar aren't great, in our night games you won't get a flight back to Abu Dhabi and although it's about an hour's flight, the cost is around £750 return!

Qatar is only allowing visas and access into the country if you have a ticket application for the World Cup.
All accommodation in Qatar for the period of the world cup is managed by Fifa.
I was fortunate to get a ticket for Brazil v Cameroon on Friday 2nd December and had a look, there are some apartments available, and the cruise ship option, but these are 2-3 nights minimum stay.
The accommodation apartments look a bit naff at 100 pounds per night for a studio apartment for 2 people.
I will only take up that option if I managed to get other games around that time, I've applied for a couple through the 2nd ballot including our potential games now the schedule is clearer.
FYI, it is a 6.5 hour drive from Dubai (Cardiff to Glasgow / Caernarfon to Dover) and a 5.5-hour drive from Abu Dhabi (Cardiff to Newcastle / Pembroke to Dover / Caernarfon to Central London) on straightforward roads (motorway)
There will be border checks in Saudi and Qatar, which I am sure will be fast-tracked in place for the world cup and I'm sure there will be coach trips set up from the UAE too given the expensive costs of flights.
But the majority of people will be staying in the UAE, so I would advise booking that if you want to secure accommodation and just go from here. The logistics will become clearer in the summer.

Thanks for that post Dubai Reds. The problem would be the 7pm kick offs. Will it be possible to get back to Abu Dhabi at 11pm at night? Then travel the 5hrs? Not feasible unless you stay at least some nights in Qatar and it's not the type of place with an all night bar then jump on the shuttle bus next morning!
How do you access the apartment/cruise ship options then? Do you get a link once you've purchased a match ticket or something?

Correct, I have a ticket for Brazil v Cameroon, I have a valid application number and a purchased match ticket. So I can book accommodation on the Fifa Portal. There are currently no regular buses from UAE to Qatar, unlike the UK to the continent, this doesn't exist. By shuttle bus, I mean there will be organized coaches from the UAE (hopefully). I would imagine they would be straight after the match - with a 22:00 Local Time Kick-Off for the England game, this would be 1am. Should be back in Abu Dhabi for 7am, then you can lay next to the pool to recover
