How have they 'opted' to play for Spain? Laporte and Le Normand have no Spanish heritage, and have qualified through residency rule. Why doesnt that rule apply for players over here? Seems incredibly unfair. I thought the rules of FIFA and UEFA were that you have to have a relation up to your grandparents to be eligible for a country? Don't know the answer to that I'm sorry. Perhaps it is a different set of rules for Basques and presumably Catalans as they both "straddle the border" Edit. After reading up on them it would appear they were granted Spanish Nationality and FIFA were ok with it. Le Normand had never represented France, Laporte had at every level up to and including under 21. However it does look like Spain have "bought" these players as Laporte is quoted some time back as saying "I would never play for Spain" I suppose the difference being if someone wanted to play for us they would be given British Nationality. Under the home nations agreement we can't just award a player British citizenship and cap them for Wales unfortunately. Was talks years ago of doing it with Angel Rangel. Whereas other countries seem to be able to award citizenship, naturalize them and then make them eligible.

Exactly right, people like Deco etc who weren't good enough to get in the Brazilian team just "became Portuguese"!

Deco, Pepe etc yet again favours the big associations with the strongest leagues doesn't it or those with mega cash e.g. Saudi. Presumably (Republic of) Ireland could go down that route but it doesn't really come up due to no top flight league to attract foreigners?

The French manager seemingly had a vendetta against Laporte - he wouldn't get selected for the squad even when he was at his peak playing for Man City. In the end it was play for Spain or never play international football. Now he's European champion so I guess he's happy with his decision
