If a player is willing to play and is needed then why not pick them? To simply say no because they "retired" is a bit stupid in my eyes. Rhys don't be so harsh on yourself. Your lack of experience in professional sport at the top playing level and then years as a frequently successful manager should not be a factor in you having an opinion on the subject of going cap in hand to retirees.

Storm Said: Savage could well be in the frame again, in form at Derby so why not?

On retired players, you're not allowed to retire - the country can still call you, and if you refuse you get a 5 day ban from football (I think it's 5) - but the theory is that you then miss the next club game. Tricky one for us to enforce as we obviously wouldn't want to offend clubs - but I recall France doing it with Makelele and he carried on turning out for them.

there is something like that yes cilmeri its so that if a nation calls a player up his club cannot stop him and the player has to turn up
i thinks its for the player to miss the club game as opposed to five days- becuase clubs would stop him traveling for a friday evening game and by the time the next club game comes around 8 days later he would be cleared to play
im sure this happend to everton with one of thier players last year that he was stopped from playing for everton becuase he failed to turn up for international duty(i cannot remeber which player tho i think it may have been anichibe of nigeria )
