Just read an article on another site about the best footballers never to win a full senior cap. The likes of Jimmy Case were in the list, who never played for England despite winning 3 European cups. Obviously, as a small nation we are not going to let players like that go uncapped, but I was just wondering who the best Welsh uncapped player might be?
The first name that sprung to mind was Carl Dale- a man with an excellent goalscoring record (albeit in the lower leagues) and fans favourite at Cardiff. He was always going to struggle to get a look in ahead of Ian Rush, Mark Hughes, Dean Saunders, John Hartson, Nathan Blake etc though. Unlucky for him that we had all that quality ahead of him in the pecking order at the time.

Was Linden Jones ever capped, certainly not when with Newport County. We loved him and I think the Cardiff boys were gutted when we swapped Nigel Vaughan for him (with others players from bot sides).
He was a no nonsense full back who also knew how to score.

Maybe we should explicitly lay down that candidates have to be retired. Matthews will very likely win a cap at some point.
Can't think of anyone personally. Most half-decent Welsh-qualified players get a cap for us at some point or another.

Clearly, most of our gifted players playing regularly have achieved caps at some stage, so this sort of list will be populated by those whose- whether through their own fault or not- career faulted an early stage.
Off the top of my head:
Leon Jeanne (QPR/Cardiff) David Hughes (Villa/Cardiff) Lee Jarman (Cardiff et al)

I'm afraid that this thread isnt going to do much to illustrate the untapped depth of Welsh football. We cap Conference players when no one else turns up for friendlies. The question maybe shouldnt be "name the best Welsh player never to get capped" but "name ANY welsh player who hasnt been capped."
That said, in the spirit of things, how about these three reprobates:
Owen Hargreaves.
Michael Owen.
Ryan Shawcross.

well squatter, thats a different question altogether- best player who could have played for Wales but didn't. I'd say Kevin Sheedy. Or possibly Emlyn Hughes? (and Michael Owen couldn't have played for us till last year anyway so we didn't miss out there)
The point of the thread was to illustrate the depth of untapped talent in Welsh football- Just to maybe point out that players like Carl Dale and Linden Jones were perhaps a bit unlucky not to play for Wales when the likes of Paul Mardon and Neil Roberts won full international honours.

Darren Gale - Swansea City debut at 18 but a broken leg the following season was the start of a downhill decline which saw him end up at Exeter instead of Liverpool.

Darren Rowbotham had big clubs circling when banging in goals in the old 4th division for Exeter. I think he did a cruciate and he stayed in the lower leagues. Don't think he got capped.

Sean McCarthy is a very good shout. I'm sure in another era - one is which we weren't so blessed with top strikers- he'd have won a few caps.
Metnions of the likes of Leon Jeanne are interesting. That could be another thread- Most promising youngster who never won a cap What the hell happened to Scott Thyer?

Kevin Evans was another who was tipped for big things, but went to Cardiff and then Carmarthen Town.
I don't think Jeanne ever wuld have made it because he had a truly diabolical attitude. I remember watching one FAW Premier Cup game while he was at Cardiff, where he was exhausted after about 15 mins because his fitness was so bad. His drink/drugs habits basically ruined his career because he had plenty of talent.

if you wanna talk about the most promising youngsters who never stepped up surely ex man utd ,ex liverpool , ex levski sofia now bromley bench warmer ramon calliste deserves a mention.
what about adam birchall remember him arsenal academy player!!
and what about conrad pulis!! southampton now at stoke till he was 24 i reckon senior tony was hoping for big things
david roberts ex numancia and some spanish first division team is a good shout. 37 now and a player coach at a league 1 team, i cba to wiki who tho atm. and what about neaths kristian o leary. at swansea his whole career even playing championship games.
personally this threads going off topic and i think ive got the best shout with michael flynn so far. especially if you consider that game against usa when a few people got capped, hughes didnt fancy him though i guess. i think rhys griffiths is a decent shout 2.
if you consider in the 70's though best at stoke only had 5 caps for wales there must be a really decent name from then that never got capped.

Pat Mountain is a good shout. Difficult for goalies- there's only one position up for grabs. Tony Roberts, Eddie Niedswicki and Brian Lloyd were all a bit unlucky to only win a handful of caps between them.
Eifion Wiliams could go in the most promising youngster to not win a cap category. All those goals for Barry, the winner for Wales B, a hattrick for Torquay on his league debut, a call uo to the squad, and then...

Based on the first 2 games I watched Shaun Pejic play for Wrexham, I'd say Shaun. He was very impressive. Based on probably every other game he played for Wrexham....
