Just set up a 1 on 1 for Raphina with a lovely reverse pass and he should have scored, but dragged his shot wide instead

The irony about the Tyler Roberts comments on here is that, if he was left out, there would be outrage on here that we’re not picking a Premier League player (probably littered with comments about Page having favourites and it being a closed shop). Yet when he gets picked he gets slagged off.

Yet when he gets picked he gets slagged off. There really wouldn’t. It’s blatantly obvious that he adds nothing in a Wales shirt and has been given loads of chances. It would take someone really really hopeless to offer even less than Robert’s does.

I was talking about the fact that whoever gets left out of the squad suddenly becomes world beaters on here e.g. Vaulks, Doidge, Fox,Bradshaw, Maxwell etc, If you read the Euros thread, HRK gets slagged off on the first half of the thread until the Euro squad gets announced, then suddenly everyone cannot believe we have left him out. I was just saying that if we had left Tyler at home and not selected him for these games then, instead of him being slagged off, these pages would be full of people asking why we are not calling up a premier league player.

I don't think that Roberts was THAT bad.
It's very frustrating having a "striker" that's never scored and I agree he's had plenty of caps.
But he was very involved tonight and linked up well with the new kid (dammit I forgot his name). His hold up play was decent too.
But the concerning thing about his general play was to hold on to the ball too much and try things that were just not needed instead of playing a quick simple pass to someone in a good position. This is something his managers should've highlighted to him, but it's gone on for so long that it could be part of his play that will never go.

Yeh fair enough To be honest we haven’t had a really good look at him until now in a wales shirt and yes it would seems like madness to leave out a premiership player. On last nights performance though he really doesn’t look premiership quality. This is his second season in the premiership and getting games so they must see something in him. Do the Leeds fans rate him?

I'm a Leeds fan, it's much the same on Leeds twitter as it is on here, I.e. not a great scoring record (never plays up front for Leeds though), and probably seems a little out of his depth in the PL. However, I do trust Bielsa on this one so while Bielsa is picking him for the Leeds squads, he deserves to be in or close to the starting 11 for Wales.

Tyler has good link up play.
The problem is he does not score goals. Which is a bit of a mystery as he has great skill / technical levels. If it does not start happening in the next year or to it never will. I am not talking about centre forwards scoring rates but high single digits numbers over a season would be good.
I guess the problem is he is usually on the bench for Leeds and has never gone out on loan.

Out of interest has Bielsa tried him in different formations or different positions? Every time I have seen him he looks a quality baller, just someone that isn't a good fit for a formation or a position. Then I think what formation or position would suit him? He's obviously not an out and out centre forward, seems to lazy to be box to box midfielder. Maybe some form of a playmaker or a less mobile tip of the diamond?

Yes, Bielsa started him regularly as one of Leeds's 2 box-to-box midfielders at the back end of last season, and it was the best I've ever seen from him. The way he would shimmy and turn in midfield was opening up space for runners getting beyond him in midfield I think people are confusing his languid style with laziness. To play for Bielsa you have to be mega-fit, and Tyler was getting up and down going box-to-box last season. He certainly isn't lazy, he just has that Berbatov languidness about the way he carries himself

He certainly isn't lazy, he just has that Berbatov languidness about the way he carries himself I know what you mean, and there's nothing wrong with having that style of play. But there are too many occasions where it just strays into being unfocussed and is really costly. There were 2 or 3 attacks yesterday where we looked dangerous, and worked it to Tyler Roberts on the break with our other attackers bursting forward. Instead of carefully threading the ball through (which he can do, he's done it several times for Leeds), he just flicks it with the outside of his boot without applying too much thought or focus, and it goes out for a throw or one of the Finnish defenders intercepts it. You often only get 3 or 4 chances in a game where you're breaking and outnumbering the opposition defence, and Roberts wasted about half of them - we can't afford to do that. The thing is, he has a point to prove so he should be doing all he can when he gets into those positions to be as focused as possible. The offsides were another example of him showing a massive lack of concentration, focus, footballing intelligence and an ability to learn from his mistakes. If you're playing on the shoulder and simply mistime the run, or the passer delays the ball too long, there's no blame attached. But that wasn't the case with his offsides, he simply wasn't making the effort or concentrating enough to come back onside. Again, you wouldn't expect that from someone with a point to prove and you certainly would expect him not to make the same mistake again after being caught out, but he did it 2 or 3 further times in about 15 minutes.

I think we should rather reflect on Colwill's dreadful waste of two gilt edged chances
Suggest he is not going to score many goals in the future. Talk about being on your heels / lacking a killer instinct.
I don't think Roberts would have messed up both those gilt edged chances like that

A player like Roberts should be at the peak of his career. Consecutive seasons in the PL and at the peak of being probably the fittest he will ever be. He should be brimming with confidence and busting a gut to prove he can finally make the step up to International level. Unfortunately he has never looked remotely International class. He comes across as lazy and disinterested. If he’s not producing the goods now, then sadly I don’t think he ever will.
Many lower league players ( not in his class) have made the step up much more than Roberts ever has. Think it’s a case of now or never for him cos I can see him ending up down the leagues.

I am just making the point that Colwill had the big two chances of the game and blew them both and so I find it ironic everyone is targeting Roberts. The problem is we have suffered from a lack of strikers for sometime now. I wish someone like Colwill could step up but despite his good technique and great positional awareness it looks unlikely he is going to fill the void Even Bale and Wilson who are usually so clinical (but not out and out strikers of course) suddenly can't take chances! Do you think this is due to the way players are developed nowadays? We are not alone - just look at Germany, as well as Scotland and Ireland. Seems perhaps we are so obsessed with developing rounded players that we maybe forget we want selfish people upfront that have one intension when possible - to try to score!

To be fair to Colwill was that his first or second cap? he's young and hardly played for cardiff. Seen loads of first caps miss easy chances, its confidence to even have a go at that stage you'd look for.

I can’t believe people are using words like’lazy’ and ‘disinterested’ about a player who is a regular under Bielsa.
The comments on finding his best position are more on the mark. Box to box midfielder? Possibly. He’s great at pressing and I think he could have done the HRK job in a Coleman team. I think he’s suffering from fan frustration that we haven’t had a genuine striker for so long.
The real issue is the imbalance. We’ve got some decent wingers but, Ramsey apart, no natural 10, and no real strikers other than Moore. Players like Wilson and Roberts are shoehorned into a system that doesn’t play to their strengths, which amplifies the weaknesses in their games.
Hopefully the youngsters will push on and become accomplished players.

I am just frustrated because many of our players do not seem to know what to do in front of goal! You just wish sometimes a 19 year old comes in and smashes it into the net, like Woodburn did. He knew where the goal was and that is why his demise since is so sad - I hope he gets back on track. A good goalscorer usually has it at a young age right?
Colwill has great technique and positional sense - I just wish I saw signs of a born goal scorer as I am desperate to see one in the Wales team again!!!
Its just a shame that Bale could not be converted into one.

I don't think Tyler Roberts is lazy generally, although some of his actions yesterday were as rightly pointed out by the likes of Owain TJ and Gwennan Harries. It might be a concentration issue more than laziness, either way the result is the same. I agree he has good energy, presses well, and the stats would probably back that up. But, as I've mentioned, he just lets himself down in his concentration and decision-making when he gets into dangerous positions. It has nothing to do with frustration about lacking a striker - I haven't considered him a striker for a while, but the instances where he let us down yesterday will equally apply in an advanced midfield position i.e. where he constantly showed lapses in concentration when we were on the break.
Completely agree that some of the criticism of Colwill has been over the top. He's still finding his position and learning his role, I just think what's becoming apparent is that it probably won't be just behind the striker because he doesn't offer enough of a goal threat. You may think it's too early to make that sort of statement, but I just feel it's been quite clear in the games I've seen him that he doesn't have that instinct and eye for a goal. It strikes me that he much prefers to run with the ball from deeper positions, getting it on the half-turn and starting attacks rather than his box-play, which is why I think he will probably drop a bit deeper in midfield eventually.

If he can improve his all-round game he could be massive for us, but Page has come out and said he does need to improve before he makes the seniors yet I know it's frustrating that Moore is our only real option at number 9, but try not to take it out on Colwill. He's in there as a young attacking midfielder, he'll probably end up getting a few goals as he develops anyway
