Women's football is still in its infancy, but is making big strides. In 20 years time the difference between the men's game and the Women's game will be small, the main difference being the physical output in the men's game, but technically and tactically the difference will be small. In the meantime I expect to be frustrated at times, as it's hard not to judge poor actions by an unfair metric, based on watching the men's game. But we all need to remember where the women's game is at on its journey. One thing does irk me somewhat is placing the admirable goalscoring achievements of Fishlock on a scale that includes the men's national side. This encourages disrespect as there is no way you can imply that Fishlock's achievements are better than Bale's given the disparity between the two games in terms of the level of professionalism. One final point. Those criticising the women's game should pause and reflect on why the women's game is still far behind the men's game. The Soccernomics book makes the point that women's games were attracting huge crowds in the early part of the 20th century, before the FA decided to ban women from playing football. So before you slag the women's game off just remember that the only reason it's behind the men's game is down to misogyny and sexism, pure and simple. To me Fishlock is as impressive as Bale, if you take into account she received far less investment, care or rewards and still delivers world class moments for Wales despite her age (late 30s) and jetting in from the US for games. Her passion for Wales is definitely on a par with his. She is remarkable - and then her experienced team mates let her down by not executing the basics, with mistake after mistake until the goal inevitably comes. She, Green-Barton and Holland did not deserve that tonight, but the rest of the team did Just no. I've said this ad nauseum in the past but I'll say it once more, men's football and women's football are two completely different sports and are simply not comparable in any tangible way. Just mentioning Fishlock in the same sentence as Bale is sacrilege, so lets stop doing it.

I’m in my 50s & never played anything other than Sunday League, but even now I know I can pass better & control the ball better than these women. Pure delusion. They're professional athletes you fool They pass the ball around faster & harder than anything you've ever experienced. You'd have far less time on the ball than you're used to, and their cardio is far superior to yours After 5 minutes you may have done 1 or 2 half decent touches/passes, and then by the 10th minute you'd be knackered and resemble a splattered tomato. Then the following 80 minutes they would be running rings around you and making you look silly People who have never played beyond parks don't understand how much of a higher level the professional game is for both men and women Tbf the only delusion we're seeing on this thread is coming from virtue signalling melts like you. Separate the women's game from the men's game and what is it? It's just a minority sport operating at a very low level. I'd give it a year or so without funding from the men's game before the whole professional game collapsed. The mainstream media can ram it down people's throats as much as they want but it doesn't change that fact. You also mentioned people constantly mocking the women's game. Who is doing this? Stating facts didn't used to be seen as "mocking" but times have changed I guess. The only way the women's game will "catch up" to the men's game at any level will be if they physiologically morph into men, which obviously isn't going to happen and I don't think you or anybody else on here would want it to if you're being honest.

Testosterone is key in any sport, so when men go through puberty they will always have a physical advantage, there's no denying that. If you put all the women's teams on hormone therapy their performance levels would also improve. I don't think it's controversial to acknowledge that However, it's also worth noting that social factors have severely inhibited the development of the women's game. They were banned from playing for....no real reason at all! Social expectations of women were placed on them by men who were in charge of society. This is why disparaging comments that others have made on here are ignorant and contribute to this same toxic culture of thinking It's fine to say the women's game isn't on a par with men at the top levels and even just below the top men's levels, but when people take so much glee in mocking women after how much men have held them back I will always speak up against it Also since being backed by money the women's game has come on loads. Anyone who has watched women's football over time knows this. It will continue to improve the more that it's backed, and I personally enjoy watching it more than ever now. By the time my kids are older the gap to men's football will be smaller, and that's a great thing Excellent post, pretty much how I see it. You only have to look at tennis to see how proper financial support over a prolonged period of time has narrowed the gap between men and women tennis. I think Mr Picton s first paragraph sums it up for me,don't see much point in comparing how women would get on playing against men ,it's just a pointless comparison,I think most people's criticism is just the por standard of play, but everyone gets gets the pickforks out and gets offended,it's this decades new version of calling everyone a racist

I agree that it isn't particularly helpful to make comparisons between the men's and women's game, but I think you're missing the point there. When hooky said that 'Fishlock is as impressive as Bale' I'm pretty sure he didn't mean they were of equal quality! It was more a comparison (I presume) between their standing in the respective men and women's game, their prestige and impact on / contribution to Welsh football. There's definitely some parallels, but it's not a useful comparison to make because people tend to misrepresent it and use it to disparage women's football.

It was a disappointing defensive display for final 45 seconds for sure. Not the first time a team will struggle to keep levels up in 96th plus minute but a key part of the growing experience to get that right.
Next games for this group away in Croatia (12th of July) and at home to Kosovo (16th of July) so lovely bit of summer football for anyone going.

The game has probably evolved a hell of a lot in Wales over the last 10 years. I knew of a girl in school 20 years ago who played football for I think the county, and I know for a fact that the level of aupport and guidance was incredibly poor compared to today. And this is not about saying that the Womens game isnt on a par with men at all, I was just interested to see how others viewed the level of standard compared to mens. I am especially proud of Angharad James as I went to the same secondary school as her, myself a bit older. Being a rugby orientated school, which gave very little time to football, it’s incredible to think an international womens footballer came from the school. Just to be clear I know you were trying to have a balanced discussion - my criticism was aimed at others Your example about Angharad James is a good example. Every woman in that team has faced more resistance to reach that level than their male counterparts

I remember watching women's football on TV years ago, pretty sure it was 94 commonwealth games and it was pretty laughable really, the standard really has come on in light years since those days, and I get why BBC always show women's football on TV,I don't think it's them shoving it down our thoughts really it's basically among the only rights for football then can afford in these days of crazy money,I quite like watching it though but after the first two games the Ukrainian games were a bit disappointing, obviously Ukraine are if a much better standard than the other teams

That said I'm sure there are plenty of amateur male sides in this country who'd love a crack at this Wales women's team. The odd Fishlock strike aside, the overall standard of what we see in women's football is just low-level shite compared to what we're used to watching. Maybe it's on a par with men's U15s/U14s if you're being generous..?

And while we're at it, let's stop blaming "misogyny" for everything. The elephant in the room here is that the women's game is not supported by women themselves. If women desperately wanted their own football competition to play in and watch regularly it would have happened decades ago. It's men who are bending over backwards to support the game financially, heavily promote/market it, even going along to the games sitting in the stands pretending they're interested to boost attendances. In theory you could put together a team of diminutive/less physical male players today (Modric, Messi, Shaqiri, Allen etc) and obviously no team of female players would ever come close to it on a technical level. It's just insulting to the professional male athletes who play the sport to even suggest that. Males will always have an advantage in the physical attributes of speed, strength and stamina (although with ultra marathons the difference is small if not non-existent). But there is no valid reason for thinking that the current difference in skill and vision won't disappear with time, assuming the female game becomes as fully professionalised as the men's game. Why would you think otherwise? This is just chauvinistic thinking. It's reminiscent of the sort of racial chauvinism (I hesitate to use the word racist, as most of the culprits weren't malicious just lazy thinkers) of the 70s and 80s. When black players first appeared in the game it was asserted that they were no good defensively, because they lacked the grit and hardness of white players. Then Viv Anderson and Patrick Viera came along and blew those myths out of the water. But still it was thought that black players couldn't be goalkeepers. That myth has also been consigned to the dustbin of history. But racial stereotypes still persist in the game, if only subconsciously. The clearest manifestation is the lack of black managers. The really smart people understand this and appreciate that the skills of black people will be undervalued. The Soccernomics book looked at the transfer fees of black players in the 70s and 80s and unsurprisingly found that they were systematically undervalued. As a consequence those teams that recruited more black players, like West Brom, outperformed their competitors with a comparable wage bill. The unrealistic World view of chauvinists puts them at a big disadvantage, not that they ever realise it.

I partially agree with you, and that was what I was alluding to when I objected to Fishlock's goalscoring achievements being put on a sliding scale that included male players such as Bale. It's unhelpful, and invites disparaging comparisons between the male and female games. However, if you believe that the women's game shouldn't be given a leg up, through modest subsidy from the men's game, then I disagree. Perhaps you can clarify your standpoint.

Maybe you should go back and have a little read of the last few pages of this thread, featuring several posts from your good self patronizing and insulting anyone expressing a different view to your own, and ask yourself who's actually getting triggered here. I think the "parks football" thing may have been a rhetorical comment, which of course was going to fly right over your head either way. "The parks football thing was just rhetorical" - the fact that you would try and defend that level of bullshit just shows how biased you are. Try being more objective in future Also, I assume that means you don't ever watch men's U14/U15 football then, given that the level is shite and way below what you're used to watching in the men's game. I guess if we follow your logic through then you also don't watch your local league/parks teams either as they're shite and way below what you're used to watching too? I'd love it if you opened your eyes and saw the deep irony in your sentiments It has nothing to do with being biased. It's about deciphering what people really mean with their comments, something you struggle with it seems. And no I probably wouldn't watch that level of football unless there was a specific reason to. Then again it isn't overpromoted or force-fed via the media like some things can be sometimes so it isn't a problem.

When you twist people's words to defend them because they agree with your point of view that's the very definition of biased Also women's football isn't over-promoted, you just think it is because you're biased against women

The quality of Fishlock is sensational. That hit - technique, timing, power of her latest goal with hardly any backlift - just wow. Wales just cannot replace that quality as no one is anywhere near that level. To me her and Bale are both Welsh footballing heroes of they last decade or so - they just did and do things that others would struggle to do full stop and the both love Cymru!

I don't have a standpoint on women's footie. I don't watch it but I don't knock it either. I was talking generally, if people keep "crusading" about certain things (not just women's footie) people will stop listening. If it is treated as a normal everyday part of life it will find it's place. It's like a news headline I suppose, one day it is a headline, the next it is something that has happened and been absorbed into life. Unfortunately there are some people on this board who read too much into a comment, put two and two together, come up with five and then start accusing you of being XY and Z.

It is absolutely being overpromoted right now. Several times in the last few months I've seen at least 50% of the sport headlines on the BBC website dominated by women's football, even when there have been important thing's going on in the men's game. Sometimes it evens creeps into the main news headlines. And that's not even touching on all the air-time it takes up on Sky/TNT/Terrestrial tv etc. You are living in cloud cuckoo land if you think that accurately reflects how popular the sport really is with the general public.

It's absolutely being reported more than the popularity of the sport. That's just because it's being promoted You have to define what constitutes "over-promotion", because what you're saying is the promotion is harmful in some way and needs to be curtailed. How is it being "over-promoted"? What's the harm?
