OK, intriguing to reflect back on all that, but I think the debate has now run its course ... the truth is, we'll never know whether a different defensive line-up would not have lost so dismally to Denmark...
But surely, on this thread, we're now more interested in musing over whether there's a future role for Osian back in the international set-up?

The hope i suppose is Osian will have some good connections within coaching to bring some real class staff with him. At the moment im not overly excited about the future of welsh football post bale

At the moment im not overly excited about the future of welsh football post bale I would say Nathan Jones is a serious contender and would probably be my choice. I'm much more sceptical about Osian Roberts than others, purely because no one actually know what his contribution has been and are just speculating. Until he actually manages a professional side, we don't really know how much of the success of the sides he's been involved with can actually be attributed to him

Gunter had near 100 caps for Wales, top defender Fair enough Ward had a decent tournament Had he been respected and kept a part of the side then Ash wouldn’t have retired, he had much more to give. Neco wasn’t ready, he was out of his depth, but it was a good experience for him. Rodon was decent tbf That’s looking at it individually Collectively Hennessey Gunter Chester Williams Davies Had 100s of caps, years of experience together, and knew the game. Giggs did some things well but the transition overall was badly handled Gunter was at that point not as good as Roberts and didn't offer the threat Williams did. He was in League 1 at this point. Ashley Williams had retired altogether from professional football a year before this match took a place Chester was probably hard done by toward the end of his Wales career but he was somewhat unreliable at that point with injuries, he didn't play the final few games of 20/21 and missed the first 8 games of the 21/22 I know you really rate some of the old guard, and I agree with you regarding some of them being hard done by, but that back 4 in 2021 is ridiculous, one of them was 36 and already retired! But he wouldn’t have retired had he been made an important part of the team, Giggs was full of shit, he didn’t even have the bollocks to announce Bale was the new captain, he just forced Ash out of the team 😂 36 is nothing, plenty of sides had experienced players, pretty sure Italy’s CBs were in their mid 30s But we were so obsessed with youth and still are it’s fking us up On another note, Andy King has just signed another contract with Bristol City! An experienced championship midfielder would be great for our side right now!

Osian has sent this tweet to the Moroccan Women's team: " Wishing this wonderful group of super talented players a great FIFA Women's World Cup Australia/ New Zealand 2023™ "
Wonder if going back to Morocco might appeal to him in due course, if there is no Wales opportunity this autumn?

Osian Roberts is always very impressive on S4C. He's always very measured, insightful, and any criticism is communicated tactfully. He has a lot of gravitas, and I would be happy for him to take over whenever Page leaves.
Given the above it was intriguing to hear him get the penalty calls in the Turkiye game so wrong. Firstly, the clear foul on Wilson wasn't even called as a foul, where the only issue was whether or not it was a penalty, with initial contact outside the box but subsequent contact possibly inside. Secondly, the first Johnson penalty claim he initially called perfectly, saying that the Turkish player made contact with the ball, but only after bringing Johnson down inside the box. A clear penalty. Then, for some reason he second guessed himself and decided it was 50-50. With the second Johnson penalty shout he decided it definitely wasn't a penalty, even though the slow-mo replay showed it was as stonewall a penalty as you can get. Then, finally, with the Davies penalty (which on reflection in my opinion was a reasonable call as Davies pushed the Turkish player with arm outstretched) he stated that if that was a penalty, then the two Johnson claims were valid ones - completely contradicting his earlier comments.
Why did Osian get it so wrong? My best guess is that he was trying too hard to be seen to be objective and reasonable, and not partial to the Cymru cause. In fact he said something, but I can't recall the exact words, that alluded to not being biased. So worrying about how he is perceived impacted negatively on his otherwise excellent judgement. For me an interesting window into Osian's psyche. I still think he would make an excellent Cymru manager, but perhaps he doesn't have the supersized ego that tends to go with football manager territory.

Been appointed caretaker manager of Como 1907 in Serie B until the end of the season: x.com/Como_1907/status/1737443931418157540?s=20Great opportunity for him to be fair! Wonder if he'll fancy bringing in one or two Welsh youngsters on loan in January?

Really good to see, but as with many of Osian's roles (and without wishing to put a dampner on his success), it's difficult to know how much of the success can be attributed to him. He's officially the manager at Como, but I've read that Fabregas is the manager in all but name. Fabregas (who's officially their assistant) hasn't completed the badges required for the role so Osian was brought in to hold that position officially while Fabregas completes the course, and the plan is for Fabregas to be the manager officially next season with Osian transitioning to a Director role.
He was given a massive amount of credit for the tactical side during the Coleman era, although I don't think anyone knows he was responsible for it. He was even credited with Morocco's success at the world cup, even though I think he was only involved in a director-type role and I'm not sure his role involved anything to do with the senior team.
He's clearly well-regarded by many in the game, particularly by those that did their badges under him (Viera, Henry etc.), and I think he and Viera did a very decent job with Palace where we know Osian had a pretty hands on role. So I don't mean to knock his achievements, but I think there is some ambiguity around his managerial experience (if we're thinking about that role for him after Page).

I keep coming back to alternatives though. We often go down the untried but respected ex Welsh player route, so given that Page gets the NL qualifying and probably WC, where would that leave us ? Gunter? Ramsey? Would Osian be more of a risk? Fair point that his recent contributions are difficult to quantify but he's been associated with some periods of remarkable improvement at Wales 2016, Morocco, Palace and now Como. He also has the respect of the footballing elite and that is pretty rare in Welsh football. Given our budget, hard to see better value for money in my opinion.

Interesting and well reasoned post, thanks for that. In many ways, those can be seen as positive things that could serve us well - a manager without an inflated ego (that’s not a dig at Page by the way!) that’s willing to surround himself with people well suited to different roles, and willing to take advice as well as give it. If what you suggest is true, it points to Osian not being a ‘know it all’ manager, but rather the head of a carefully chosen team. He’d perhaps be enough of a ‘name’ to be manager, but would be willing to defer to others for the good of the team. Maybe he knows some brilliant young tacticians/technical coaches who are not yet qualified/to much of an unknown to be manager of a half-decent international side. He is clearly very interested in football as a sport rather than a way to further his reputation.

Osian might also be the type who would want someone in his staff who he almost sets up to take over after him too.

I don't think that is the case.
Osian is a very modest man and you listen to his interview then he was definitely leading things. Not doubt he consulted but he ultimately was managing things
Goodness can he have some credit!

Glad to see him finally do something as a manager, before now he was clearly talented behind the scenes but it's a different thing being the main man. Now there is a bit more weight to him as manager for us
My first choice would still be Bellamy but Osian would be a close second to take over from Page now

Must be Bellamy now, unless he doesn't want it either.

I'm not sure how old Osian Roberts is but I can see why helping Como build helps his longer term career choices.
