Hi all,
I've been to Valciennes a few times, so I thought that I would post the following info -
I think that V is a good choice in comparison to the carnage that will be in Lens and Lille. V has a nice main square with a few good bars and brasseries. It good tram system which goes to the edge of the city in places.
Ibis Hotel Probably one of their nicest Ibis' that I have stayed in and close to a park, but probably about a 20 min walk to the main square. I don't think that the tram system goes close to the hotel, so you will have to either walk or grab a taxi. There doesn't seem to be much traffic in the city so I wouldn't of thought that a taxi from the train station to the hotel would have been any more than 10 euros. There aren't many (if any) bars or restaurants nearby, so you will have to head into town to eat / drink.
Getting to Lens / Lille There are ticket machines in the train station, so buying train tickets to Lens shouldn't create any issues. The times that I've been to Valenciennes the trains to Lens have run every 45 minutes to an hour. With trains to Lens via Lille a little more frequently. There are two train stations in Lille; Lille Flanders - the station for French trains (except Eurostar) and Lille Europe - the station for the Paris to Brussels Eurostar line. There about a 15 min walk away from each other. The trains to V from Lille will leave from Lille Flanders.
Getting to V from Belgium If your going to V from Belgium you can take a Belgian railway to the border town of Quievrain. The train line stops there and then it is about a 15-20 min drive to V from there. If you do that, I think that you might need to book a taxi in advance.

Sounds like there will be a good group of us heading into Lens together. Are most people looking to head back to Valenciennes after the game for beers as opposed to hanging around in Lens?

See how it goes on the day but will probably want to get away from Lens fairly sharpish after the game. Depends how many plastic chairs are left intact, might not be anywhere to sit!

I would have thought heading back into Lens will be a sensible option...sounds like there will be a good crack there. Looking forward.

Does anyone know if we can get train tickets for Valenciennes to Lens on the day or is it best to book in advance? Anyone booked theirs?

Looking at what's available at the moment online, the 08:34 looks best as it's direct (avoid changing train in Lille or Arras where a lot of others are staying). However, downside is getting into Lens quite early where there isn't much going on
Would be good to hear what everyone else's thoughts are too

We have been looking at this. Could be a good idea to get a taxi/mini bus as the direct trains don't look like ideal times. Don't fancy swapping trains in Lille where the crowds are going to be rather large.

I am staying in campsite near Valenciennes and will be on the train to Lens on the day of the England game. 0834 sounds good to me, first at the bar or bars!

Another option is a nice town called Kortrijk just over the Belgian border. Ibis £70 for twin room. Easiest travel option is to get a taxi (approx. €100 each way). Beer is far better than in France!

The train times back from Lens don't look too encouraging. Any IBIS chaps up for getting some minibuses/taxis back after the game?

Definitely interested in this

Yup. Got a feeling the train station is going to be a nightmare after the game

Yup. Got a feeling the train station is going to be a nightmare after the game The guys on the other thread have been quoted 250 euros for a 8 seater minibus from Lille. Valenciennes is nearly double the distance (34km vs 60km) Has anyone got a quote?

Guys There are regular services between Valenciennes and Lens and vice versa, some services take an hour and some take almost 2hours? . SNCF advance purchase tickets are currently on sale at €12 each way, I think advance purchase is cheaper than on the day but am not 100% on that. Enjoy the game.

The trains that take an hour are direct , the others you have to change in Lille , I think ! Or at least go via Lille , which could be a bit of a bottle neck !

They've now put on a direct train at 12.34 which takes an hour. That will be perfect timing. Get there with enough time to soak up the atmosphere but not be stuck there for hours.
