Seems strange. If Warnock was a fan of Gunter you'd think he'd have tried to sign him for Cardiff seeing as we've been desperate for a right back for ages, and signing him would obviously have been popular with the fans. Think this might just be his agent trying to drum up some interest in him. Unfortunately, and as much as I love him, I think Gunter might have to drop down a level if he wants to be a starter at this point in his career. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see many Championship teams being interested in an aging, limited full back, especially in this day and age. He hasn't been a regular at an average Reading team for a while now. Personally, I feel Gunter should have tried to transition into a centre half years ago, and then I think he might have been valued a bit more at club level. Probably a bit late in the game now though.

Probably a bit late in the game now though. I thought the same I.e Cardiff but maybe it's more to do with him being a free agent soon? You could be right about his agent trying to find him a move. He started the game for Reading the other day, and I believe he's been a regular for them before he had an injury. I have to disagree about dropping a level, he's far too good for League 1. If a Championship club wants a top professional, a very good defender, and a consistent player... They won't get much better than Gunts! I know he doesn't whip the ball in like Trent AA, but I just feel like he's such an underrated player overall. Good character too! I'd like to see him work under Warnock.

I agree that he's definitely still good enough to play in the Championship, I just don't think Championship managers really value players like him any more, especially since he's on the older side now. Gabbidon speaks on EJFOF about the fact that managers don't seem to value experience much anymore, and players like him, Collins and Ledley all struggled to get contracts at a championship clubs once they hit 30.

Wages are probably an issue as well. Younger players will often be cheaper and will only improve. Older players may have bags of experience but they can nose dive pretty quickly. Angel Rangel managed to get a deal at QPR at the age of nearly 36 so there's hope for Chris yet.

I'd put a couple of quid on never. Good in a way. Means competition for places. I think he’ll cross the line. I just don’t see a lot of international experience at the back.

It helps Gunter that he's versatile. He's done a pretty decent job at centre back on the whole, so he could find himself getting games in that position. Having said that Giggs is clearly not given to sentiment and Gunter could well struggle to get much more game time (like Ash), especially with the emergence of Neco, and a few younger options being available at centre back.

Had a more than decent game today, despite the loss.
Considering that he turns 31 next month, he sure has a lot of running in him

Yeah, it would make perfect sense for him to go back to cardiff. His qualities as a dependable, fairly limited right back is all they need given their style of play.

Looking like Wayne to get to 100 first now.

I know Giggs has said he'd like to try and get him to a hundred, but he has to do by his own right. If he isn't playing, then he isn't going to get more caps. The benefit he's got is his versatility, and that he can cover at centre-back and left-back. But he's probably third choice right-back now, and needs a move to a Championship side if he's going to get in to future squads.

as much as i'd love to see gunts get to 100 he has to do it through merit. if he gets back to playing regularly (preferably in the championship) i don't see any reason why he cant get the magical tonne. certain games might call for his experience/versatility as we have a pretty young defence at the moment.

Gunter is the perfect player to bring on if we're wanting to protect a lead, if he gets a club he'll get to 100

Would be great if he could get to a 100. If we're winning comfortably tomorrow, I'd bring him on, but I can't see Giggs doing it I'm afraid.
I wonder where he'll end up, maybe Forest might come back for him? If not, I find it hard seeing him signing for a championship side.
Wayne will surely overtake him now.

Why do people want Gunter get to 100? I would hope only truly special players achieve that.
I thank Gunter for what he has done for us but are we a charity or something? He was always bang average and is now on the decline. He represented us well but lets be honest, he would never have got to 50 caps if he had some kind of competition at right back.
Now we have have 2 right backs well ahead of him - Gunter has not even got a club! Surely we should prioritise every opportunity to give Neco experience over some sentimental bullshit cap for Gunter. Neco and Roberts not only give Wales more chance to win but are far more exciting to watch!
Its a privilege to play for Wales and not for Wales to have Gunter or even Bale play for us! Gunter is fortunate to have won so many caps. Now if Neco and Roberts are both injured then fine Gunter should get a cap. However, if that is not the case then he should not.
I hope Giggs is ruthless

And I would be surprised if he wouldn't be the first to stand on the terraces and cheer on young Williams and Roberts.
The last player in the team with an ego.

Never let us down, solid defender, started almost every qualifier and game to Euro 2016 semi final 🤷♂️ He's hardly a Sunday league player like some would suggest.

I love Gunts, he's a fan on the pitch type player & him reaching 100 caps would serve as proof that it's not always about the ability you have - if you get your head down, work & show commitment to the cause you can be the one to achieve greatness
I think if possible we should try and get there but obviously we need to plan for the future too. In our last few games, Giggs tends to use 2 subs and then leave the 3rd one for very late (like Cabango vs Finland). If we have a healthy lead tomorrow, I'd put Gunts on as the third. That leaves him 3 away - and he could get those in friendly cameos possibly

97 caps is more than enough proof that's it's not all about ability. He's the 4th best Welsh right back and shouldn't get bonus caps to make a nice round number and headline. If anything it diminishes the accomplishment of getting as many as he has. People will remember the ones he didn't earn more than those he did.

Just for future planning, rather than Gunts. I’d leave out Matt Smith and possibly Woodburn tomorrow given we’ve 25 players needing to be cut to 23.

I'm surprised he hasn't been picked up at all. I'm sure he can still do a job at Championship level, and has bags of experience.
Apparently Reading have a problem at RB now with one player out with a long term injury, I wonder if they'll give him a ring!

Hmm....still no sign of a club for Chris?
I have to be honest, given Giggs' ruthlessness, I thought we would have definitely been dropped for these matches - unless Giggs is planning on giving him a few minutes?
You do have Andrew Hughes and Morgan Fox playing in the championship, so you could argue why they haven't been given an opportunity. Then there's Kieron Freeman.....not sure what's the situation with him atm.

Looks like he's signing for Charlton. Bit disappointing as I think he can definitely still do a job at Championship level. I was hoping Cardiff would go after him.
