Looks like he's signing for Charlton. Bit disappointing as I think he can definitely still do a job at Championship level. I was hoping Cardiff would go after him. Agreed

Arise Sir Christopher ;-) Good point. I can’t see the difference between Alun Wyn Jones’s achievements & Gunter’s, but it’s the rugby player that gets the accolade because it’s the Establishment sport.

Bowyer sung his praises today, as well as Joniesta. Gunter played centre half.

Bowyer sung his praises today, as well as Joniesta. Gunter played centre half. 4 points from their first 4 games before he arrived. 15 points from the next 5 games and no goals conceded with him in the defence. Probably too good for league 1 and could still have a serious chance at squad place next summer.

Bowyer sung his praises today, as well as Joniesta. Gunter played centre half. In a back 4 or 5? If we continue to play a back 5 I think Gunter will get his 100th cap soon. Similar to Davies I think he'd be great as a right sided CB in a back 5 & I'd personally start him there against to the USA to see how he does. Could be a fantastic experienced option for us there - especially now as he's getting regular minutes

I like the idea of Gunter in that position, but for me Davies has to be LCB. There is no way he’s a wing back, but he’s a top class LCB.

Dan James would be the one under the most threat from any number of replacements. Although Giggs likes Morrell, I don’t see him dislodging any of that team.

We have little in the way of natural left wing backs.

I know we've all slagged Gunter off a bit over the past year, but I'm pleased he's found a club and doing so well.
Playing at CB seems like the best transition for him, as at his age, being a RB is too physically demanding.
If he continues to play well in that position I'd have no qualms seeing him start in a back three for us going forward - perhaps not as first choice but certainly in friendlies and as backup for injuries.

Assuming he gets minutes against the USA, do we reckon he'll get two more caps to get over the line? In theory could do it this window I suppose!

He can play RCB in two more friendlies within the next year and he'd be there. I think there is concerted effort from the FAW to get him there. I think he'll actually beat Wayne there now, and then Wayne will also get there by the time summer 2021 is over

Yeah it's bonkers really when you consider that our former top players would have been dead certs to start every game for us when we were poor. But the lack of international tournaments has really hurt us in respect to caps. Just shows that the process is working by getting 3 achieving that feat so close to one another. If Bale plays in the next 3 then he'll be on 88, so he should get there by the end of the Euros - which is remarkable given how injury prone he's been

One reason I respected Giggs (from a footballing sense) was his decision to ruthlessly sideline Gunter and move on with Roberts which offers us a bit more.
One of my concerns with Coleman is his conservatism and that small risk he starts relying on Gunter again.
I admire Gunter as a man / proud Welshman but not as a talented footballer

One of my concerns with Coleman is his conservatism and that small risk he starts relying on Gunter again. I admire Gunter as a man / proud Welshman but not as a talented footballer Coleman used Gunter so much because he didn't really have any other options, he certainly didn't have a Neco or Roberts to pick at the time. Our talent pool has changed & grown a lot since he left, and if he were to come back he'd look at everyone for their ability and pick his best team based on that, not just slavishly pick lower league veterans because they were good for us 4 years ago. I think it's unlikely he'd use Gunter as a wing back again, or randomly call up Taylor and Vokes, when he has better younger players playing at a higher level of the pyramid

I admire Gunter as a man / proud Welshman but not as a talented footballer Firstly this is incredibly harsh on a player who never let us down Second, who else was there? All the alternatives were either injury prone or inconsistent. Roberts wasn't a regular in the Championship until after Coleman left
