Danny Simpson is on Goals on Sunday on Sky and they are reviewing the yellow card for diving and Simpson says -
‘I’ve trained with him at a training camp and he’s a good kid and an honest lad’
Where and when would Danny Simpson be training with Daniel James?

James needs space in front of him to really excel - something most teams in the Premier League are likely to deny him. That doesn't mean he can't do well, but to really catch the eye he needs space to exploit his pace. I suspect he'll have an OK season. I'm more interested to see if he can develop his all-round game, as he's still very much an uncut diamond.

They shared a training camp in Dubai over summer with Liam Moore and Jeffrey Schlupp. I remember the article where Simpson called him 'world class'.

Doing alryt, ar kid ;-) Had another two shots on target in first twenty minutes. For a wee lad, he certainly packs a thumper of a strike ;-) And putting in a great shift in defence - not that Giggs will care about that...

I do hope this is the end of managers trying to make him work on the right. Seen it with Rob Page, Cam Toshack, Graham Potter before. He's ten times the player on the left, where he has the option of shooting with his right or crossing with his left. Gets lost on the other side of the pitch.
"Versatility" is overrated. Keep him where he's best.

Only had a yr left on his contract I think.
Hopefully put in a sell on clause

Could Swansea have held out for more or was their financial situation that bad? A fair question, but at the time the selling price was considered pretty good considering that had Leeds been promoted (which they probably would have had they succeeded in taking him on loan in January) Swansea would have got a lot less. But with 1 year left on his contract and no serious competition for his signature then the price they got was a realistic one. To be fair, even before the ink had dried on his contract his value probably increased by £10 million, just by virtue of being a United player.

The financial situation was that bad. We were desperate to sell him for short of £10m in January. Anything to reduce the massive debts the deficit was and still is creating.
Selling DJ for £15m was the only reason we could turn down £10m for Oli, and haggle Sheff Utd up to £20m incl. clauses. First player out the door was always going to be a discount as buying clubs knew our situation and we got burned counting our chickens the previous summer (when most of the players we expected decent fees for had to go for peanuts or subsidised loans). We were very fortunate it was moneybags United that wanted one asap.

I can't imagine many Welsh wingers will fancy Madrid in the near future.

Clearly better on the counter he struggled tonight when trying to take the game to the opposition.

Playing in the wrong side kept cutting inside and into traffic. Him and bale should of swapped wings and gone outside the full backs

Would rather them go on the outside and put more balls into the box to put the opposition under pressure.

I agree that James does need to vary his game more. Any decent analysis will highlight his preference to cut inside. The one occasion of note that he went on the outside he put the ball on a plate for Lawrence at the near-post - but he just didn't read the opportunity and react as a natural striker would have.

He cuts inside so much because fullbacks stand an extra yard off him, afraid of his pace to run in behind. You could see the difference over the course of last season with us - in his early games as an unknown quantity he got to the byline a lot (Ipswich the obvious example) but by the end all the space was inside.
"Any decent analysis" is what's leading to "his preference to cut inside". He's being shown that way. All teams have done their homework, and forcing him infield into traffic is considered the lesser danger. Although that might change after his recent goals for United. That shooting quality wasn't something we saw much at Swansea (Stoke at home excepted).
What worked well for us was having Celina roaming in that left channel who would go outside whenever DJ cut in. Two direct running threats created a lot of space for one another on that side, to the point that our left back (Naughton) didn't even have to venture forward most of the time. Which had obvious advantages preventing counters and recycling possession. United did similar with Mata the other day.
He's (relatively) awful on the right. Always has been. Been tried often enough. Can't shoot with his left foot, so much easier to shut down.

I can't really agree with your view on teams deliberately showing him inside. I think it's James' preference to cut inside given the opportunities that presents for him to shoot at goal - an area where he's showing steady improvement. What is beyond dispute is that James is now attracting much more attention from doubled up defenders - whereas against Slovakia he was still very much an unknown quantity.
I agree with your observations jaspert on Celina, and it was disappointing how we failed to support James sufficiently by overlapping runs from Taylor or Bale. As a consequence James tried to force the issue a bit by going it alone with no joy. However, he still managed to create more goal-scoring opportunities than any other player (the delicious chipped cross that Wilson got a headed touch on that just evaded the onrushing Roberts and Lawrence springs to mind). Agree he's much better on the left, but to be fair he delivered an excellent ball in to Roberts (which he screwed just wide of the post) late on against the Azeris.
James is a big asset, and we need to make better use in future of the spaces he creates by attracting close attention from multiple defenders.

With two main scoring threats attracting heavy marking by defenders in Bale and James, from a strategic vantage, that's potentially leaving some space for other midfielders to come forward. The likes of Brooks, Ramsey and Johnny Williams can also be key to opening up the opposition in penalty areas.
I agree that James is a huge asset for us though. In time, I believe he will learn to adapt his game. Now, he seems to be struggling to break down defensive teams, and this has also been shown in the Premiership when United play Wolves.

I kind of agree with this, but if you look at the opportunities we created against the Azeris then Dan James was at the heart of the majority of them - and this without much support out wide. With proper support his impact will be considerable greater.
