The Maltese league is semi-professional mostly, so I'd expect their under-21s to be part time. With that in mind we should be beating them, but it won't matter as long as we do the business in the qualifying games.
Flynnfan, yes definitely. My only concern with looking at Italy's goal difference is that we have to play them away in the last game. We could be on 16 points, with Italy on 13. Even if our goal difference was +5 better than Italy, the Italians would know that a 3-0 win would overhaul both our head to head record and our goal difference (Remember how Preston overturned Cardiff's +11 goal difference in just one match last year).
So our superior goal difference is a positive thing, but I wouldn't read too much into it until the final game is upon us.
A regrettable result- but no disaster- the only worry appears to be that all the under 21 strikers of the previous campaign are now first team starters, or contenders.
The only logical solution can be- unless for some reason, the forwards otherwise promoted are not required by the first team- to promote from the lower levels, even if said players may not appear strictly ready. This means that the likes of Peniket, Loveridge or even Da Silva will have to be pushed forward.
Never-the-less, in spite of the Malta result, I believe we are likely to finish at the pinnacle of the group.
Sorry lads but I have to say that Welsh fans/ British fans just don't get it. The game has moved on from 1958. There are no weak teams anymore. Even a small nation like Malta would be sufficiently schooled to be defensively organised and able enough on the ball to keep it a bit. They may have played together a lot in training which counts for a lot these days. However the number one problem i feel is that too many of us are swayed by the club name next to the player. Empire is gone world war 2 finished 60 years ago, beatles and the stones are passed it etc.
If that was directed at me walrus, then I'd like to point out that I only said it was a bit disappointing, but expected. It's like tonight- I'd be happy with a 1-0 win. Delighted even. I don't think we in Wales suffer from the delusions of Empire that perhaps some on the In-gur-land side of things do. In the thread on the current England squad I posted a very interesting John Nicolson article ciritisizing the way the Ingurlish press will expect Ingurland to easily brush aside all their forthcoming opponents... including us. His take is a bit different- Go take a look.
The proof of what walrus is talking about is that Iceland (population 347,000) are currently beating European champions Germany(population 80 million) 4-1!!!! ..about to go into injury time.
Some bad news on the under 21s front. Following last night's results (including Italy's win in Bosnia and England's win in Portugal), it looks as if the number of points needed to qualify as a best-runner up is 17, not 16.
What that means for us is that we'll probably need 4 more points to qualify (and win the group). 3 more points won't now be enough for a best runner-up spot.
Italy v Wales The maths: Win or draw - we win the group. Lose 1-0 - Italy win the group on away goals (seriously) Lose 2-1 - Wales win group on goal difference. Any other one goal defeat - we win the group on a better head to head record. Lose by more than a one goal margin - Italy win group.
Welldone Flynny and the boys. Big negative though, Why do Welsh players sidefoot penalty's. Thats not the right part of the foot to take a penalty. Oneday we'll get caught out big time on that. Kanu-Robson did look good and that was an own goal but i'm sure he'll claim it.
Really Scoop? According to Dragonsoccer our goal difference was three better than Italy before the game, so four now...
Really. If we finish level on points, head to head record between Wales and Italy counts before goal difference. GD will only come into play if Italy win 2-1.
So, does that mean Italy will now have to beat us 4-0 to qualify? That was a great result, encouraging after yesterday's disaster
no, Italy need to beat us 1-0 (in which case our head to head record would be 2-2, with Italy having an away goal) or by a margin of two goals or more.
Clearly it would be a lot better for us if goal difference came first.
