Hi...thanks for that!! Yes hotels booked and paid for the Nanning Marriott and a central hotel in Beijing!! I'm traveling with a mate to Nanning but I'll be on my own in Beijing so will most likely do a guided tour of the Great Wall..probably through the hotel, but would you have any other suggestion on how to book?

Must admit that I am purely a DIY type traveller, and try my best to avoid any groups, even if that occasionally means I won't gain entry or perhaps only see a fraction of the sights. Staying overnight on the wall in a tin foil survival blanket, 30 years ago, was one of the highlights of my travels. Illegally... of course ...

I've booked my great wall trip through Viator.com. They're a third party, but convienient. The actual tour operator is Chinaseeing.com. There is also a company called Hantang tours. If you do want to see the wall alone go on the man in seat 61 website and he gives great details on how to get there by rail (Badling section of it). I may do this as well as the tour as its a different section.

A huge circus / Disneyland feel. Don't let this put you off taking the train and doing it on your own steam. You will find that 99% of the people head to the right (East) along the beautifully manicured pristine looking Wall. Walk about 1km West and you will start seeing the genuine real deal. A further 1 or 2km West will certainly need more than flip-flops and the gradient is very steep and quite rough going! You will not see a single soul 30 to 40 minutes walk away from the main entrance area. Yes. There will be a zillion know it all bloggers online telling you to avoid Badling and do the Jin Shan Ling to Simatai walk. With due respect, that is a 6 to 7 hour drive with a 4-hour hike. Be aggressive and do not start conversations with the traders / would-be guides. Say "May-o Chen" if you must say something (I have no money). Boo-shi means No

My tour is too the Mutianyu section of it, which apparently is also quite touristy.

My wife suffers with arthritis and can't walk far without a rest (steps are the worst). We wish to visit the wall - which area would you suggest we go to.

My wife suffers with arthritis and can't walk far without a rest (steps are the worst). We wish to visit the wall - which area would you suggest we go to. I have only been to the Badaling section, but from memory, if you stick to the main entrance area (circa 300m to 400m walk) I am pretty sure one can do it with a disabled chair! Actually going there on a weekend makes for great photo opportunities, as there will be around 50k-100k Chinese on the Wall... Please don't bother with the Ming Tombs. Honestly, there is nothing to see! In fact, I'd recommend going twice to Badaling and both times ignoring the Tombs. Once in the morning (about an hour's trip on the regular bus number 877 for Y12 - from Dengshikou (north 2nd Ring Road, near Jishuitan subway stop) and once on the train, in late afternoon (perhaps the 3.30pm) - from HuoYing Station. There are several departures in the afternoon (about 65 minutes). Last train back at 8.30pm. Plenty more information here (note their info of special tourist bus from Tianamen Sq for Y20 - www.travelchinaguide.com/china_great_wall/scene/beijing/badaling.htm

SAFETY AND BEHAVIOUR corky mentioned this in his FSF notes, and I would like to elaborate and emphasise this as much as possible. I lived in Hong Kong over a period of 3 years and travelled extensively around China - circa 15 months or so, in total Chinese people, even the highly educated / English speaking / Hong Kong living ones - do NOT share our humour and generally frown upon drunken / childish / jovial behaviour. When it comes to dealing with police or anyone in uniform - only upmost respect will be accepted. Th type of behaviour I witnessed in Kiev and Tbilisi, where fans we're drapping police officers with flags and placing bucket hats on their heads - will only end in a very bad way. No one is likely to offer you drugs in Nanning , but you are very likely to be offered drugs in Yangshou and Halong Bay. Absolutely do not accept. Not even jokingly. There is a huge scam whereby they film you accepting the drugs (or holding them in your hand , jokingly) and ten SECONDS later, a police officer appears out of nowhere to arrest you. Obviously, you will be allowed to pay a US$200 fine, or otherwise, be taken to the police. What ever you do, do not argue, and give them as much as you can possibly afford. People have Sat in custody for months awaiting court proceeding. If you are taken to a police station AND entered on the registry, you can forget about seeing Wales for many months. Offer as many bribes as you can up until that point, though! Surprisingly, the Cannabis leaf grows wild all around the outskirts of Yangshou. Go for a walk in almost any direction and you will see huge bushes of it! I have travelled with a fair few lads that picked their own and then dried the leaves against the room's lights all through the night... I have been reliably informed, that April to May - the very end of the dry season - is the best time. By the way, for those going to Vietnam, that is equally strict and severe. Don't fool around with people in authority and don't accept drugs. I travelled with an Irishman who was asked to write down his name at a police road-block in Vietnam. He wrote : "Mick E Mouse ". No one noticed at first, but about 10 minutes after resuming the bus ride, all hell broke loose. Sirens were blazing and we were stopped again. He was dragged off the bus by his hair and thrown to the ground in front of the chief officer. He actually had the sense to plead and beg for mercy and was eventually releaseed. But it really could have been sooo much worse for him...

COUNTING IN CHINESE The video, below is a decent introduction to the way that the Chinese use sign language when counting. They really not very intuitive, and will rarely understand anything other than this method. Note two things: 2 = Er, but ONLY as a number. Never as a counter. Asking for TWO (of) beers is "LIANG (ga) piju" . Two (of) people is "LIANG (ga) ren" etc. Finally, the girl in the video does the TEN as a thumbs up, which must be a 'young' or 'trendy' thing. I have only ever seen it done as a CROSS ➕ as that is the Chinese character for it! The teens and 20s 30s are the same as English : 15 = shi wu 18 = shi ba 25 = ershi wu 28 = ershi ba 50 = wu shi Also, if it's money that you are counting, they very rarely use "Yuan" . They will almost always use KWAI. Shi ba Kwai = Y18 50 fen (half a kwai) is "wu MAO" and never wu shi fen! 40 fen = Y0.4 is "se MAO" m.youtube.com/watch?v=XrctZU89L0E

"China vs Wales - Pre match party CONFIRMED @ 97 Live house on Bar Street from 2pm match day"I can't find this place on Google Maps - can anyone help please? I've been struggling with this too. Tripadvisor and google searches not helping. Now I'm not saying this is right but this is what I've come up with. Its based on a tripadvisor review for starbucks which is on bar street and then copying the chinese from tripadvisor into google maps. Looks promising as there are a few bars www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Folk+Song+Lake/@22.8109049,108.3729443,17z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x36b3e9016edf3069:0x92abc8de901675a1!8m2!3d22.8109!4d108.375133 You might need to copy and paste the complete link for it to work. Anybody else?

I think that is common practice in every country except in the UK! Personally, I colour photocopy the main two pages, fold them in two and then laminate them. The corrupt copes (eg. Mexico) don't like it, as they know that there is not much they can do with it as a bargaining tool, but it has always worked for me
