Gabbs has started both of West Ham's games on tour against top class oppostion. He played 45mins in each and West Ham didn't concede a goal.
Reports say he has looked strong and impressive and there is a good cance he could start the season alongside Upson.
If this is the case and he does well he must be in the team that plays Montenego.
If tosh goes for 3 centre halve he can sweep behind Williams and Collins.
If he plays a back 4 then he will probably play Williams in the holding role.
Hopefully this will end happily as Gabbs has been our best defender since Ratcliffe

Other than Williams in the holding role, I couldn't agree more. A classy defender who makes his fellow centre halves look much better - Ferdinancd, Ginge, Page, Upson. Melville looked like Franco Baresi alongside him!

Would be very good news if his fitness holds up...and of course he can find some form.
It would be ideal to have Gabbidon and Collins in a back 4 with either King or Williams in front. If this happens I would be very confident in our ability to handle Montenegros strikers, which will be where we win or lose the game against them imo.

Can anyone here clarify Gabbidons contract situation? Clearly it must have some time left to run, or WHU would have got shot of him by now. Very pleased that he's done so well in pre season, but I'd really like to see him get 90 mins v Luxembourg before being considered for Montenegro. If you'll remember, he played away in our friendly there last August, looked very rusty and made the mistakes that lead to both of their goals. I just don't think he should be risked there in a qualifier if his form and fitness is still in doubt. If he is in form though, I would agree he should be one of the first names on the team sheet- for me he's definitely our best defender since Kevin Ratcliffe and I don't think too many Wales fans woud disagree with that.

Let's hope so. I'd love to see him back. He's been sorely missed. I'd love to see the old Gabbs Collins partnership fired up again, and talk of Williams as sweeper or in the holding role could stop, as I see Williams as descent cover for these two, in a perfect world.

When on form- but he hasnt been at his best for a number of years with injuries and lapses of concentration. To think of what we mind so have got out of him if he had remained injury free most of his career! So frustrating.

if he starts the season for west ham - and stays in the side, that will be a remarkabe turnaround for him - and us!
fingers crossed.

Gabbs started for West Ham again last night and the positive thing was he was paired with Upson. Third game in a row he has started and yet to concede a goal.
They both went off at half time

That's all very encouraging and I've got my fingers, toes and everything else crossed for Gabbs, but didn't he have an excellent pre-season last summer too?

Fit and playing at the Hammers, Gabbs would be straight in the side for us. Maybe even captain again. About time we had some good news concerning injuries.

A shame, but i think he's had his day with Wales. 5+ years ago, it was his pace that was his strong point, especially alongside the likes of Melville, Page, and even Steve Evans!
He's been out for so long and he's not getting any younger, so if he has slowed down a bit, it's really going to show at international level. He *might* get away with it against the lesser teams, but in the qualifiers against quick strikers, he could get shown up, as he did away in Montenegro last time. We can't afford to take that risk.
He's probably behind Collins, Williams, Morgan, Nyatanga and even Ribeiro now for Wales. It's sad, because he was one of the best defenders we've had over the last 20 years.
Saying that, I hope I'm wrong. We need the old Gabbidon back.

arent we looking at gabbidon through rose tinted sbecdols slightly?
while he has at times been brilliant for us,especially when he started his welsh career,he's often struggled for consistancy at domestic and international level for me,injuries have to be taken into consideration obviously but there been times where he's failed to deliver
watching him in the last few matches i felt really sorry for him,he looked out of his depth

His reading of the game is his strongest attribute, like all top centre halves. His pace is an asset as well though

So whats going on now then? Plays in all the pre-season friendlies and then is on the bench for the opening game?
With the way West Ham got tonked is it likely he will be in the starting XI this weekend? I see it as vital that he has some first team football under his belt by the time we take on Montenegro. Collins/Gabbidon have to be the centre back pairing.

I thought he played very well at left back against Stoke last week. Looks like he's managed another 90mins, helping WHU to keep a clean sheet against good oppostion. This is great news for us. You know if he played left back or centre back today llanerch?

another 90 mins clocked for Gabbs today. That's about 5 games on the trot.

good news but with gabbs you never know!If flynn decides to go 4-4-2 maybe he should play him at left back i think if its got to be williams and collins in the middle cant see past that!

A caller on 606 mentioned how well he played at full back. Isn't Jacobsen an orthodox lb though?? In which case Gabbs may have played rb. Either way it bodes well for Flynny.....Gabbidon's tweets notwithstanding

a fit and in form gabbs is always a starter for Wales, nothing wrong with playing him on the left or right though, would like to leave williams and collins as they are.

I thought Jacobsen was an orthodox right back? Which means Gabbs probably played left again. Up against Aarron Lennon. And he did well up against Jermaine Pennant last week so he's being tested by decent players.
