When I went to some of the Fan Zones in Germany for the World Cup it was free access and tickets weren't required. I can't confirm it'll be the same in France though.
Its worth going to the fans zones in the city's that have a match on the same day even if you haven't got a ticket to the game. I was in Fankfurt when it was the Holland V Argentina game & thee buzz / atmosphere was superb. We'll be going to Bordeaux for the Ireland v Belgium game and maybe two others in Bordeaux & Toulouse (as we are staying in between) well as the Wales games of course.

I think they are but they will make up for it with the prices Will probably only sell beer which is sponsoring the tournament as well

Again , I can only comment on my expieience in the German fan zones and the Beer and bratwurst / hot dogs weren't being sold at inflated prices. it was quite refreshing to see the organisers not taking advantage of a captive audience. Fingers crossed similar happens in France.

bit of copy and paste for you to whet ur appetite
A HUGE FAN ZONE
During all the competition time an immense fan zone will be set-up on the “Esplanade des Quinconces” and will broadcast the different matches along with a rich event program. It will be one of the widest fan zones among the 10 cities welcoming the 2016 EURO Championship. All of the 51 matches will be broadcasted on a giant screen of 116 m². Entirely free, the fan zone will be a strong gathering space both dedicated to celebration and football. 91 animation projects including various themes have been selected by Bordeaux Town Hall in order to impulse a good pace to the whole celebration period. Concerts will also be part of the program on non-playing days.

Place Francois Mitterrand, Lille Fanzone is very near to the Euro Star station. The 30,000 capacity fanzone in Lille will be located near Lille Europe Station throughout the tournament, at Place Francois Mitterrand. With live screens showing matches from across France, the fanzone promises to host entertainment throughout the competition for all visiting fans.

assuming that the fan zones are in the city centres I've read that Bordeaux's is 8km from the ground, Lens is 2km and Toulouse is 3.5km. So Lens & Toulouse is walkable but Bordeaux needs some thought of how to get from the Centre to the Stadium.

So Lens & Toulouse is walkable but Bordeaux needs some thought of how to get from the Centre to the Stadium. Toulouse have announced that there will be a FREE STADIUM SHUTTLE from Arènes - Parking Relais - Gare St Cyprien As for Bordeaux, Stadium Matmut Atlantique is 10Km North of town. A tram ride (25 mins) to Parc des Exposition / Stadium. Think there might also be a shuttle river-boat. Se interesting information here

Totally agree. In the likely event that I don't have a ticket, I am staying put in the Lille fanzone for that one! Besides, my brother is applying for 2 tickets for the Slovakia v Russia game in Lille the day before. So I just might have a vodka or two ;-)

For Fanzone read Running Battle Zones, seems to be a lot of idealism on here. Russians Poles English and Germans not to mention the French Arab population. These people aren't on a wine tasting trip. This is not going to be pretty. People need to wake up a bit.

If I don't get a ticket I'm not going there, it'll be nuts. Why not? I won't be getting involved in any trouble so will stand by and watch them all get arrested if they kick off. I'm not even on about the fans. The place Lens has a population of 32k. So with a full stadium that's 70k with the local people. They reckon 100,000 people will end up going ticketless from the UK. Call it 5k other nationalities. 175k people in a 32k town. You'll be lucky to get near the fan zone let alone get in the fan zone!
