So there are four months to go...
I'd love to be able to ask for and understand directions ; order in a restaurant and just shoot the breeze...
Are there any free web sites out there that offer audio lessons as well?
I have tried pronouncing French from phrasebooks in the past - really doesn't seem to work for me!

Unfortunately most apps give a handful of really simple words then ask for money.
However, 'French Free 24/7 Language Learning' is pretty good. The basic set, covering a lot of key words and phrases is free (but more advanced upgrades require a fee). It breaks down vocabulary and phrases into topics, so it's all in bite-size chunks and doesn't feel like "real" study, then gives a few puzzles to practise what you learned. My favourite bit is the 'Speak and Compare' section where you can listen and mimic the pronunciation, then play it back to hear yourself - I never knew I could sound so sultry.

1 regardez terrorist!
2 un bier sil vous plait!
For insurance I have also learnt the French for " don't hit me, hit my brother" and "that's a very large knife, where did you get it?"
