He did well against Ireland, but it makes sense for him to be rested for some games at this stage of his career.
It might take a bit of time for our center-halves to form different partnerships from game to game, I thought Mepham had two solid games for us though.

Agree that Ash was missed and that it will take some time for new partnerships to bed. Although Meps looked very solid in the air and very composed on the ball, he was certainly bullied by the Danes and on 4 or 5 occasions, was just pushed / nudged out of the way. That would never have happened to Ash (or ginge, for that matter).

Chester on the other hand had a mixed performance - and should have read the danger for the first goal. He failed to engage Ericksen at all.

Hopefully Ash can get games so he is match fit for the Ireland game, if he plays regularly I would rest him for the Spain game.

CB is a role in which you get better with age, learning 'street smarts' positioning, when to go and when to drop etc. so he's bound to be found out a few times at that level by seasoned pro's. To be a nailed on starter for a good championship side at that age is a bloody good start so i've hope for him to have a great career.

His blunder cost a goal today. He really needs to get his act together. Rodon (and Roberts) shone yet again for Swansea today. Williams is still the main man for now - but Mepham could replace him come the Euro qualifiers unless Williams shapes up.

It's a tricky one because people are generally more impatient with players who have a dip in form once they turn 30.... "he's past it" etc.
Based on club form, Chester and Mepham should start for Wales atm, Rodon was impressive yesterday, Joel Lynch had a couple of rocky moments.
I agree Ash needs to pick up his game, I'm confident that he will! We need his leadership and presence on the pitch.

I think against Ireland you have to have some experience so either Williams or Gunter probably need to play.
However I would be happy to see a back 4 of Roberts Mepham Chester Davies.

Best I've seen him play for a long long time, and to think people wanted to drop him for Rodon.

He just needs to be playing week in week out.
Once he misses a few games he's off the pace.
Had to play tonight, true leader

I must admit, I loved how Giggs publicly backed and praised Ashley after this game. It served as testament to the faith that Giggs puts in him not only as a player, but as a captain. For all the rubbish he has had to put up with, he deserves that respect and recognition.

I was one of the people calling for him to be dropped for Rodon. I'm delighted to have been proven wrong. He was brilliant tonight. Rodon and Mepham are the future but there's life in the old dog yet! Da iawn, Ash!

I agree that for now, we should stick with Ash while we can still get a performance out of him but the future is bright.

Williams' performance last night was a huge relief, even though I knew and said before the event that the criticism of him (especially after the Spain game, where he was the least bad defender) was excessive. A relief because it's inevitable that age will be catching up with him and because it's undeniable that there has been a drop-off in his performances for club and country. But a relief most of all because we still need his leadership on the pitch.
Although Chester is still an important player for us I'm not convinced he has leadership qualities. In fact, apart from Ampadu I'm not sure who fits the bill? It's probably far too early for Ampadu (who may be more useful for us as a holding midfielder anyway).
I think this will be Williams' last campaign in which he plays a significant role - so there needs to be a transition in personnel and leadership at the back. But ideally this should be a phased affair, rather than thrusting it on a player such as Mepham or Ampadu, who are making their way at international level. That could easily backfire. Williams' form could be a crucial factor (amongst many) in determining the success of the forthcoming Euro campaign - as it was last time.

I agree with most of your post, but I’m not sure if there’s been much of a drop off in his Wales performances. Giggs has been changing things quickly. Personnel, tactics...so it’s going to take time for players to adapt, they’ve done well so far. Giggs has been pretty loyal with Ash and was quick to praise him after Tuesday night’s performance. Euro 2020 will most likely be his last campaign, I’m still confident that he can play a big part. I don’t think he should necessarily start and play every minute anymore, it will do his mind and body a lot of good to have Mepham, Rodon and others ready to step in. It’s important that we have him around.

What a complete Bellend.
Whichever way you look at it.This bellend was/is captain of our Country and with that comes responsibilities.
to be caught on the official UEFA footage poking fun of photos on the official stadium walls of Cardiff fans and calling Cardiff fans ( the majority of Welsh fans for years)mugs is simply NOT acceptable.
Now even if he thinks this was banter then someone needs to have a serious word in his ear.
just when club rivalries are starting the raise their heads again, something like this could easily go a long way to escalating those.
at best the bellend should have known better...at worst he acted like a total dick and should be stripped of the captaincy

He has been a distinguished servant of Welsh football. He is no longer at his best and is prone to the odd error, but he provides a focus and leadership and is the no nonsense kind of guy the younger players need around them. He will get stuck in and looks out for the youngsters.

People seem to forget that Ash was a Swansea player for about a decade and he probably had loads of abuse off Cardiff fans over the years, ffs he would even get booed by a certain section of Wales fans because his affiliation with the club. You can't just switch it off. It was just a private joke between him and Allen, another ex Swan that was unintentionally caught on camera.
Cardiff fans have probably said the worst shit imaginable to him so don't be surprised if he has an opinion and still feels a bit bitter over it. Anyway he said nothing against any Wales fans.
