Competitive debut for Sam Bowen tonight, starting for Cardiff in the 2nd round of the League cup. He's been in a few squads so great to see him make a start finally.

Awarded "star man" by Wales Online, whilst McCarthy said he was the "pick of the bunch"

Good to hear.
We seem to have a decent crop of Welsh youngsters featuring for both Cardiff and Swansea which I don't think we've had for a while. Long may it continue!

Don't know much about him tbh, but it's great another Welshman is getting first team action in the Ch'ship. What position does he play?? Or preferred position?

I think he's a CM if I'm not mistaken

Son of Jason Bowen who got a couple of caps. Plays in CM, more of a holding midfielder if I'm not mistaken.

Some good news for him that Joe Ralls & Leandro Bacuna will be out for a few more weeks. Could be some more opportunities for him

I saw a fair bit of him in the last u21 game + in Cardiff's game against Notts Forest. Can't say I remember him doing much. What type of role does he have?

Some good news for him that Joe Ralls & Leandro Bacuna will be out for a few more weeks. Could be some more opportunities for him How highly do you / Cardiff fans rate him? I saw a fair bit of him in the last u21 game + in Cardiff's game against Notts Forest. Can't say I remember him doing much. What type of role does he have? The ones who watch academy football have always rated him pretty highly and there have been calls for him to play for a while. I like him, he's tenacious, surprisingly strong but can actually pass the ball (a rarity in Cardiff's midfield). He didn't get on the ball much against Forest but that was through no fault of his own, he showed for it regularly and made a number of runs that just went ignored by his teammates. Unfortunately, he'll probably be a victim of our utterly atrocious style this season as we continue to bypass the midfield. I was at the Brighton game where he made his debut and was easily the best Cardiff player on the pitch in a side that included Vaulks, Morrison, Flint & Josh Murphy. As far as I know Mick really rates him so I imagine there'll be a spot for him in the squad throughout the season, there was even a spot on the bench for him against Swansea at the Liberty last season. Ryan Wintle was signed this summer and then moved out on loan not long after Bowen outshone him in the Brighton game There were concerns he wouldn't sign a contract much like Sion Spence so I assume certain assurances have been made with regards to playing time. As an aside, people who are clued up on the academy/under 23 sides at Cardiff consider this crop to be the best for some time so fortunately it's coincided with the club having no money and having to play them

www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/transfer-news/plucky-cardiff-city-youngster-slipping-21757396Not the most insightful of articles, and the quotes are all from preseason so nothing new, but good to see Bowen getting some recognition in the media. He was one of Cardiff's best performers against Reading by all accounts, playing in a midfield three that actually kept some possession and passed the ball around on the floor a bit. Hopefully Mick McCarthy sees this as the way forward (I've accepted the fact that he won't get sacked so just hoping against all hope that he changes his tactics), and if so, Bowen should get plenty of game time as he's probably already our best midfielder on the ball.

Online only, click the link below at 15:45 and you should be able to watch I'll be in work so if anyone can review Bowen's performance I'll be interested to hear, as he sounds like the ball winning midfielder we need in our squad. Obviously he's getting regular minutes at a higher level than Morrell at the moment too www.s4c.cymru/clic/Live

From what I've seen of him he's not exactly a ball winning midfielder, though he can do a decent job as one. He's quite an all-rounder, and was played as a deeplying playmaker for Cardiff's U23s last year, which I'd say is his natural position, but the few times Mick has played him he's been used more advanced as a 10 or 8. But that's more because MM, being the uber conservative and cowardly manager he is, doesn't trust young players to play in the deeper or more defensive central positions. If Bowen properly makes the step up I think long term he'll be the successor to Marlon Pack (who's out of contract in the summer). Unfortunately, from a Wales perspective, he probably doesn't really offer anything that different to what we already have at the moment, though he's probably more physical than Morell/Levitt.

I'd say he looks to progress the ball more than Morrell does and like you say is more physical. But yeah anyone hoping for a radically different option in the middle will be disappointed

Fair enough, perhaps it's more just a case of hoping someone can mould him into more of a ball winner

Needs times and minutes but could be a good asset.

The fact he didn't manage to dictate things effectively against Moldova in a really poor team performance doesn't bode well. I remember even the likes of Morrell bossing things at that level.

No disrespect meant to Newport fans on here but it does appear in recent seasons that Newport have the "keep the crowd interested all season then fall away at the business end" sort of approach.
