I’m saying there has to be a balance in every aspect of an economy otherwise there is the danger of making the most key jobs unattractive because people can earn better wages doing jobs that benefit society nowhere near as much. We’re seeing it right now where we have a chronic lack of nurses because there are jobs that are far easier and pay much better. Case in point when I was working as a self employed, self taught programmer, building websites that were fairly frivolous in nature, a cushy, 9-5 life working from home, meanwhile my old dear was working for a low wage inundated with calls to the police and all the emotional stress that brings. Anti-social shifts, working at Christmas etch Colleagues of hers would regularly need counselling. They can’t get staff anymore because it just doesn’t pay. It’s ridiculous. There is no way I should have been earning more than her comparing the value to society of the work we both were doing. Not many people can programme, lots of people can answer the phone. Ergo you were paid more. Before we talk about demand. Not many people can programme, or dance the watusi underwater. Many more people are prepared to deal with blood, faeces, bodily fluids, hold peoples hands while they die alone, risk catching fatal viruses in their line of work. Doesn't mean their financial remunerations should be a reflection on their willingness to undertake those duties. It shouldn't be all about demand but my point remains at lower league level young lads should at least be paid enough to build themselves a future.

We'd be playing in the National League North under fan ownership. It all became incredibly toxic. Fan ownership isn’t all it’s cracked to be. I can absolutely assure that with 100% rather than 20% fan ownership post 2002 Swansea City would have gone down not up. The supporters trust was a total shambles

From my perspective, one of the problems with ownership that's starting to make sports worse is the skyrocketing franchise values. As they come up for sale, the old type of owner who was top 1% rich is being replaced by owners who are .0001% rich. To me that's a whole different crowd of folks.

It's not everyday that you hear a completely new argument. You're suggesting that minor league pro athletes should be low paid, because otherwise it would suck people from more productive pursuits into a "frivolity?" Like we are misallocating human resources as a society? Is that correct? In the US Minor League Baseball players just voted to unionize. I think that's a good thing as hopefully some of the obscene money from the Major Leagues will trickle down to them. I'm for more people making a decent living. Minor League baseball isn't going away. Neither is lower league British soccer. Might as well have the people down there getting paid. I’m saying there has to be a balance in every aspect of an economy otherwise there is the danger of making the most key jobs unattractive because people can earn better wages doing jobs that benefit society nowhere near as much. There is no way I should have been earning more than her comparing the value to society of the work we both were doing. I always thought the argument about nurse/teacher/first responder pay vs athlete pay was a bit ridiculous because they have different employers and work in different industries. Maybe people are making a broader point about society as a whole, but in practice how would you specifically redistribute from a soccer player to a nurse? I'd always been for redistributing a bit more of sports wealth lower down the totem poll within a specific sport. That's an easy policy to implement. But now I'm going to sit and consider whether we should actually do that. Maybe people should quit sport by 24 and move onto careers that will benefit society in a greater way if they aren't going to hit the big time. After all, there's no shortage of 23 year olds who are willing to take crap wages and sleep on a couch in order to kick a ball around. It's not like lower level leagues are going to go away. They just turn over their athletes at a greater rate with low wages.
