Interesting one posted by dragonsoccer: www.thesun.ie/sport/football/9542308/wales-cork-goalkeeper-david-harrington-switch-allegiances/22 year old GK playing for Cork City in the Irish second tier. Not the most exciting at first glance, but apparently Everton are on the verge of signing him so he must have something about him. Welsh father who played GK for Cork City in the 90s and settled there. And he was was succeeded as GK for Cork City by none other than Noel Mooney.

He'll have a much better chance with us than Ireland who already have a couple of young, very good keepers.

As a former keeper who played in the Irish league, surely this is a mission for Noel Mooney!

Impressed that Welsh FA appear to be proactively targeting a genuine prospect in a position that needs strengthening for the long term. Especially as there is a strong Welsh connection.
"Cork City have been aware of the Welsh interest, and have ensured that international cap clauses in the move with Everton - a switch that has been agreed in principle = do not specify a particular country".

Remember his dad Phil playing for Chester back in the day.
It appears he is the goalkeeping coach at Cork.

If he does go there, it’d be interesting as to what Everton do with him. 22 so wouldn’t make sense for him to be in the u21s, perhaps a EFL loan would be good.
Just hope he recovers from his shoulder injury and proves to be a capable keeper. That and he declares for us….
Interesting that although he’s been called up by Ireland’s u21s, he did not play for them.
Sidenote is that Nathan Sheppard is impressing at LOI Dundalk too. Also 2000 born with no question around his Welsh availability. Shame he’s only 6 foot.

As noted by someone on here. ROI have strength in depth in that position. One to look out for.

Sounds like he'd be 2nd or 3rd choice? Unless he's the real deal I've not seen him play.
If he can start for them, he'll usurp Adam Davies no bother.

Caveat at that as well depending if he wants to represent Wales or not.
But given they have Kelleher, Travers and Bazunu all young and at prem clubs compared to ours. Again he might not feel Welsh

We do people bother tracking players that are highly unlikely to play for us?
Harrington comes from Cork - you can't get more Irish than that! He was selected for their U21s last year
Why would he be desperate to get into our system? Ward is 29 - he probably has at least another 4 years in him so it is not as though a vacancy will come up anytime soon.
He will also know our star is fading with Bale and Ramsey no longer able to drag us to finals. I have no idea how good things are looking for Ireland but they gave Portugal two very competitive games (more competitive I think than we could have managed) and they could well emerge as stronger than us over the next few years having gone through a painful couple of years.
I am more focused on the likes of Luke Harris - I hope he is still committed. Not to give him a single minute in the Nations League was a mistake in my view. Not saying he deserved it but we had little to lose from finding out where he was at for 15 minutes or so.

It's a Welsh international forum. People are entitled to speculate about players who qualify for us
Someone like Scottish born Terry Taylor seemed unlikely to commit to us, but he did. And given his recent form he may well get into our seniors soon. You never know who might be good enough one day

Got the impression that the FAW were actively monitoring him, so presumably they think there's some interest. Noel Mooney as an ex Cork keeper is a useful link and Harrington's Welsh links are strong. His dad's Welsh. Agree with the assessment that Ireland are probably better placed than us for the years ahead but point is they have a lot of competition for places in and around his age group. Back up keepers don't get a lot of caps! If he gets into Fleetwood's team and does well, wouldn't be surprised if we tried to call him up and then he'd have an interesting decision to make.

Seems to have at least some interest in us. It’ll be fascinating to see how he develops.
We certainly shouldn’t be discounting anyone, unless of course they publicly state their intentions otherwise e.g. Karl Darlow.

Let's hope his ceiling is far higher than Fleetwood Town If hypothetically he became 1st choice at Fleetwood, suddenly we'd have a young keeper playing regularly at League One level. Considering our lack of depth at GK that would be a very positive development for us. Even if he didn't immediately usurp Adam Davies, then he'd be ahead of League Two level Tom King for sure Lots of ifs and buts, but if this lad kicks on and so does Daniel Barden, we might finally have someone talented to look to, as the GK talent pool has looked bleak post-Wayne

Strange one as Ireland are really strong in the GK department so I don't understand why they'd call him up - he's almost 24 and only made one appearance for Fleetwood last season (in the very last match of the season).
Could it be that they've caught wind that he's on our radar so they've preemptively called him up? If we have approached him and he's rejected us for Ireland it would be an odd choice considering he'd likely never get above 4th in the pecking order for them, and even that might be a push.

Gavin Bazunu is injured. Hence why he's been called up. They've got a few other younger keepers doing well
Not played for Fleetwood either been injured and only just getting back into it.

Will still be eligible for us as there's no chance he's hitting 4 caps any time soon
In a few years time when he's nowhere near Ireland's squad we may have a chance with him

Called-up. Given he’s over 21, believe one competitive cap ties him down.
