A knew nothing about this guy until I came across this games England vs Wales in 1969 on You Tube www.youtube.com/watch?v=d0qh8H_F96AHe was apparently the best forward at that time! Listen to Jimmy Hill at the end He was known as a header of the ball and was the top goal scorer in Division 1 for two seasons (1966–1968). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ron_Davies_(footballer,_born_1942) Its mad we had so many good players over our history but always fell short, not helped by the English teams refusing to release our players for international matches

Ron Davies was from my neck of the woods, typical old fashioned style CF played for Southampton.

Wyn Davies was another centre forward in the same era as Ron and also good in the air (Wyn the leap). Won the Fairs Cup with Newcastle in 1969. Was also in the team against England in 1969,as was John Toshack. So 3 CFs in the side that day. Was from Caernarfon and said to be the sole Welsh speaker in the Wales side at that time.

We had a decent team in the early to mid 70s. World Cup qualifying for 74 finals. We drew with England at Wembley and beat a very good Polish team. We then reached the quarter finals of the Euros in 76.

Wyn Davies was another centre forward in the same era as Ron and also good in the air (Wyn the leap). Wyn was my Dad's favourite player. He's the guy in my profile pic for those who don't know about him. Mad that he played over 300 top flight games for Bolton, Newcastle and both Manchester clubs, but only won 34 caps. After he retired from football he came back to work for a famous Bolton based bakery empire. Sill lives locally I believe. Met him a couple of times, great guy, and always looked incredibly fit and healthy for his age.

Ron, Wyn & Tosh also played together as an attacking trio vs Scotland at the Racecourse in May 1969 (54 yrs ago!)
A great, end-to-end Home Nations game, with Scotland edging it 5-3. Ron scored a couple of goals for Wales, with Tosh getting the other one. Scotland featured such stalwarts as Billy Bremner, Alan Gilzean and Billy McNeill.
Almost 19,000 attended the match at Wrexham that day.

It was beautiful of those Saint fans to do what they did for him too! So fascinating to discover someone who was that prolific that you had no idea about - just by watching a Wales England match from the 60s on Youtube with his record referenced!

Met him once as a kid, didn't realise he held such an incredible scoring record, the fact he struggled after his career ended is sad, imagine his value in this day and age he certainly wouldn't have money issues.

He once scored all four goals for Southampton in a 4-1 win against Man Utd.
If only we had a deadly goalscorer like him now!
