For those of you that might want to follow Finland or Estonia ;-))
I will certainly add more to this thread after March, but I know that there are plenty of other optimists out there already ... Personally, I enjoy staying in 3 or 4-bed youth hostel dorms - a great chance to meet up with others. Their singles and doubles are 3-star hotel standard. The official German national HI is called DJH Jugendherberge and they almost all allow no payment and no cancellation fee if cancelled by 6pm the night prior to your stay. A notable exception is Dortmund (7-day cancellation) - but all other nine cities were fine. When filling in the form, remember to select the amount of persons AND also the “travel solo or with friends” drop down – under 17 / 18-26 / over 27. Then click on “APPLY” before selecting the dates…
A&O Hostels have a 24-hour cancellation policy. Its the largest independent hostel network in Germany. If no beds are available, FILL IN YOUR EMAIL and get an instant alert from their “Waiting List”… As of August 2022, Deutsche Bahn (DB) has partnered with Star Alliance and Lufthansa / Swiss etc customers have been able to buy very cheap onward rail tickets as part of their flight deal – look out on their web site. As far as I understand it only applies to the super fast ICE links. With thanks to @garywilliams There is a superb €49 transport ticket, also known as the “Deutschlandticket”. The €49 monthly subscription ticket gives you access to all public transport throughout Germany INCLUDING LOCAL S-BAHN and U-BAHN (excluding most faster ICE, IC or EC intercity trains). Longer rides may take double the faster ICE / IC times, but for €49 a month its amazing value! Once you've signed up for the subscription, €49 will be debited from your account every month – so be sure to set up BY THE END OF MAY and then cancel by 10 of June, if you don’t want it to roll over into July!
Oh, and just in case you are tempted by the Ryan Air / Wizz cheap flights to Frankfurt Hahn airport ... its 120km and over 2 hours from Frankfurt and nearer to the Luxemburg border ... You'd probably be beter off going via Brussels (Charleroi) where you can get a train to Cologne in under 3 hours ...

I've bought a couple of £ 30 tickets for the Saturday for Dublin to Hamburg on Aer Lingus. Still got to get to Dublin but insulated against the inflated prices that will come with qualification. Maybe even before with England fans going further afield as airports around Dussledorf and Dortmund are now north of 300 quid for that day.

Maybe even before with England fans going further afield as airports around Dussledorf and Dortmund are now north of 300 quid for that day. I’ve also gone for the optimistic option. Booked a Ryanair flight from Stansted to Bremen @ £40 along with decent hotels there for Hamburg, Potsdam (for Berlin) and Duisberg (for Dortmund) all on no pre-payment and free cancellation. Hotels are not in the main venue cities, but all were reasonable £, in their respective city centre, near stations and easy trips on local train routes (with late night services) Will keep on checking to see if the crazy hotel rates drop in the host cities. Planning on train travel between each base. Hopefully I’m not hammering the cancel button on Booking.com in March.

I haven't booked any flights at the moment, but gone for free cancellation for accomodation: Hamburg 2 days Hannover 3 days Berlin 2 days Leipzig 2 days Essen 2 days (for Dortmund)
Started getting excited for it already 🙈 hopefully we manage to make it.

Just a little reminder that the second EURO 2024 ticket portal will close on TUESDAY lunchtime. For those of you with very few or no aways (or if you are not a Red Wall member at all!) - perhaps its worth a punt on the FANS FIRST €30 tickets - you may also allow them to nudge you up one category to €60 tickets. The FAN ID system should almost guarantee that you will be in the 'correct' area ... In APRIL, if you decide to RE-SELL the tickets on the RE-SALE portal, UEFA usually do not charge for this service - unlike FIFA last year ...
THIS WAS THE CRITERIA FOR THE FIFA WORLD CUP - Remeber, we are likely to get 16% of each stadium. Circa 8500 for Hamburg.

I’ve also booked 3 nights 17th - 20th in Hannover for mid-expedition recovery and a culture fix for the other half. I’ll probably still do the first leg to Bremen and Hamburg even if we don’t qualify. Hopefully that doesn’t occur.

For those of you that don't want to wait until the €30 EURO TRAIN special fares go live on 17 January, note that the D-BAHN tickets for 15 June go live at 11pm MONDAY. I bagged myself a couple of ICE tickets from Frankfurt to HANNOVER on 14th just now for £15 (slightly discounted fares on TrainPal app), but prices to Hamburg / Bremen were already €40 when I logged on and are now over €55 ... I hope to do all the other trips on the “Deutschlandticket” €49/month thing.
THIS CHART MIGHT BE USEFUL

Looks like Lufthansa no longer flying from Bristol or Liverpool as of early February ;-( My flights have just been canceled, but there are no alternative dates / times offered. I imagine that they will permit the use of Zurich on the twice/weekly connection - but that is almost always an over-night. I'll just wait now til April - but not happy if I need to go via Manchester or London ;-(

Did anyone else try for tickets in the latest UEFA ticket application round ?
I applied for tickets for all the games Wales are drawn to play in. Didn’t get a sniff for any of them. The plan was to go whether or not we qualified.
Only one way left now to get tickets and use those hotels I’ve booked. Hopefully we’re partying on March 26th and my night isn’t spent cancelling hotels on Booking.com.

Only way I'm getting to see the Red Devils, is if we both end up 2nd in our group - R16 match in Dusseldorf 1 July - its written in the stars ;-)
I only applied for Fans First €30 tickets (and didn't allow an upgrade) ... but I was still hoping to get one or two ... @exilejack got nothng as well '=(

I’d accepted the upgrade option, so that’s a double knock-back on all the games I applied for. Been reading about lots of disappointed fans of all countries on other forums. The common theme appears to be that you either got no tickets for any games, or got multiple tickets for loads of games.

He managed to get one €50 R16 - that precious 2Dv2E potential Wales v Belgium ... or NL V Belgium if we top the group again ;-) The mistake we both did was only apply for one ticket each ... so we now need to find a nother one!

Uefa lottery did not give lucky winners tickets for their own country. It was a shambles. Maybe someone in Wales has Scotland tickets and after Tuesday I may well have Wales tickets if you beat Poland. Worth a try.

Oh well time to close this thread… sadly another one bites the dust I'm gutted this morning, but I'd already bought a couple of cheap flights. I'm struggling for much enthusiasm at the moment, but had always said that I'd go regardless of whether we were there or not - just to sample the atmosphere of the tournament. Worth keeping the thread open for anyone else doing the same?

LUFTWAFFE REFUNDS
Just a heads up to anyone booked with Lufhansa / Austrian / Swiss and had the airline cancel their flights (from Bristol or Liverpool).
If you follow the link from the cancellation email to your account and select "PROCESS REFUND" it will actually try to DEDUCT £50 UK/German Airport taxes / fees / charges etc and stated "fees/charges already deducted - non refundable".
IGNORE that and call their 0371 number and talk to a human, they will pass you on to the refund dept, who wil explain that ... if you use your account refund option, that is an "instant automated refund" (and the automated system deducted those fees automatically) - but IF YOU DONT MIND WAITING 3 WORKING DAYS ... YOU CAN GET A FULL REFUND...

I bought 2 Aer Lingus Dublin to Hamburg flights early on. They put the departure back from 7am to 10.15 am. Should I be able to get my money back on those tickets. I looked on their website but its not clear.

I looked on their website but its not clear. The amount of a refund and any or type of refund depands on their own T&C in defining "significant schedule change". In theory, you should qualify for a full refund, as ALL airlines must (by EU law) bring you to your destination within 3 hours of the stated (original) arrival time.
