Collison could still play for England. He has 6 or 7 caps, but all in friendlies. However, at present, I don't see England calling him up and if they do I can't see Collison accepting, it would farcical for a guy who has several caps for one country to turn out for another.

Then they would be players who did not want to play for us and would rather play for England. No loss in my view.

Surely:
the more dilutedor varied the eligibility criteria = the more tenuous Wales's footballing independence ?
In which case tai33stashon is right, we may as wel all line upp beehind teh THREE LIONS cus wer'e al British

In which case tai33stashon is right, we may as wel all line upp beehind teh THREE LIONS cus wer'e al British i think we all get a bit carried away when a foreign player gets a british passport. as i said in a previous thread, there has been no mention from any 'foreign' player who has played in england for 5 years that he would like to play for wales nor has the welsh fa or any of the management team said they are considering asking any 'foreign' players to play but for some reason we all start saying that its a disgrace that arteta, almunia,n'zogbia, etc might be playing for wales. in fact,i'm struggling to think of any foreign player who has ended up playing for any of the home nations after moving to britain for the sole reason that he got transferred to a british club. seriously, has it ever happened?? i dont mean players like john barnes or jeremy goss and all,i mean someone who has moved here in his 20s to play football, stayed 5 years, got a british passport and then chose which one of the four home nations to play for. if it turns out that it has never, ever happened i think we can stop panicking for the moment.

Thats because its a relatively modern phenomenon and will become more commonplace with the foreign influence in the prem. Im surprised its not happened sooner since foreigners have been packing out the prem clubs since roughly 96/97. Almunia, Arteta...I expect it will be more of an issue in future and we need to decide which side of the fence we are on. Interestingly, the debate amongst the English on the 606 board is not whether Arteta should be allowed to play for England, its whether he is good enough for England. Its all about opinions I guess.

Yes that is true, but what I am driving at is I would like to see players who may, say, move to cardiff at 20 odd, stay there over 5 years and then want to play for wales to have the opportunity- so long as they actually want to. If you pay into a countries economy for a long time then hell, shouldnt you have that right to claim a passport from that country? Note I said as long as they actually WANT to. So Im not really advocating a find a foreigner to join us at all costs approach. If people want to play for us as they feel part of Wales having lived there for x number of years. Then I am all for it. Just my opinion on the matter.

Anyone see the latest on Arteta? Not eligible as he didn't have a UK passport when he played U21s or whatever for Spain. Interesting twist to the saga that could affect us in future with other possible players, but I doubt it!
