My local Co-op in Cardiff has discretely put up a St George Cross and a few shelf displays. And my local Texaco has some car sticker thingy free to take from the counter, but which appears to be being ignored by most people. Carlsberg and the like are still branding their produce with the Three Lions and Rooney et al, but is it me or are retailers showing more pre-world cup restraint than usual? I fear the Flintshire and Wrexham folk among you are getting a raw deal as usual...

I have seen small pockets of stuff in some border retailers but by and large not a lot. The suprising thing for me, living in England, is how low key everything appears over here. Certainley flags from cars, bunting on houses looks a lot less than in previous tournaments.
Whether people are more pre-occupied with making a living, disalusioned at sucessive failures by the English team or disallusioned with football in general I don't know but it isn't a big conversation topic in my local out with two or three people.
Or maybe they are all at home learning how to spell disallusioned cos it don't look right to me with one or two l's!!

I've been in Lancaster for the last few days, and it is definitely not a show of restraint there. The whole town has England flags all over the place, and even the train station and the churches there are showing their support.
Aberystwyth, where I am at present, is naturally not so enthused. Haven't seen a single English flag around, though many places are bigging up the World Cup as a multi-national event.

In the Next store on Queen Street Cardiff some weeks ago there was promotional literature which read 'We are England'! I asked the sales assistant what the hell it was about and he grumbled about it also, but seemed to think it was above him. So I emailed Next (the main customer services contact in Leicester, as I couldn't locate a Cardiff contact) and told them how it was factually incorrect in the Welsh capital, how this was detrimental to tourism (given efforts to emphasise a unique culture in Wales) and that basically I was unhappy about it and wouldn't be shopping there while it remained. I had a response from Next saying they were reconsidering the wording, and it should only have read 'Come on England' (which I told them I wasn't happy about either).
I dont know what is there now as I haven't been back, but basically fellas you need to tell the businesses what you think of it. They'll soon back down if they think its going to hit them in the pocket!

that sounds infuriating caeboy.
i mut admit though, i have been bowled over by the complete lack of any saes stuff around Cardiff. i was in sommerfield and they had some WC flags up - all apart from the saes flag!
but yes, i agree - you must complain when you see something.
oh, on a seperate but kind of related note, i have just returned from watching noah baumbach's latest film, 'greenberg'. ben stiller refers to his Welsh friend (played by rhys ifans) as being 'british' (sucks, but i get that) and then as being 'from england' - now, this could be deliberate, a reflection of stiller's character's extreme self-involvement (and he does indeed constantly ignore the details of people's lives), but it kind of seems pointless given that a tiny % of the audience will 'get it' in this case, and erhaps unwittingly will contribute to the belief that Wales = england. of course, it could just be ignorance on the part of baumbach/stiller, although i doubt that ifans would let it pass.
im trying not to think about it too much, but if anyone knows rhys ifans, could you ask him?

Trendy - on Ifans, I know of him (friend of a friend), and believe he's pretty patriotic. I know his SFA chums and his brother have been to plenty of Wales games etc., and it wasn't just for his love of Alcohol that he started promotting Penderyn whisky. I doubt he'd have let it go unless there was a reason for it.

I live in rural carmarthenshire near Brynamman and have been surprised in such a strong Welsh speaking community at how many St George flags there ARE flying in the area. Even the local pub is flying the flag. Nothing against it as I'm married to an English woman myself but I just hope people remember to support our lads come Sept.

Hate to disappoint you, but it will not happen in our lifetime.

ha ha. he's winding you up and youre both biting.next he'll be saying giggs should have chosen england so he could have played in a major final. im sure england have enough fans without someone needing to go onto a welsh football forum to try to drum up some more support.
