Watching the first few games of the world cup, it's telling to see how much of a difference control of the midfield has (at international level especially). I think this is one of the main reasons we haven't been able to qualify over the years- our players have not been technically good enough in this area of the park. Even when we had the worlds best goalie and some of the worlds top strikers, our midfileders were nowhere near that level.
This is another reason to be optimistic over the next decade or so though- in Ramsey, Collison, Bale, Ledley, Edwards and Allen we'll have possibly the most technically gifted midfield we've ever had.
