No, not the Aussies last night (although they were of course- proof, if it was ever needed, that it's a bit harder to shine on the world stage at football than egg chasing) but us, apparantly.. well, that's according to Chris Wathan in Wales on sunday in that piece in which big Nev talks so much sense.
I'm just wondering which game Chris is talking about, becuse I don't remember it. Thought we did well away at the start of the group- they needed a wonder goal to win in with around 15 minutes left and they certainly didn't slice right through our defence time and time again like they did last night. Then at home Ballack scored a goal from a throw in that they took when it should have gone to us, we were denied an obvious penalty, they should have had a man sent off and they scored a flukey o.g in the 2nd half. Ok, so it was 2-0, but unlike the Aussies, at least we gave them a game.
Why do the Welsh press constantly feel the need to do this with our football team? You can bet that if the Welsh egg chasers finish within 10 points of one of the southern hemisphere giants it'll be described as plucky, unlucky, promising etc. But with the football team, we narrowly lose a game to a superpower and we're 'outclassed' I just don't understand it.

Must be the latest one at the mill stad, where they demolished us. Schweinsteiger in particular was immense that day, controled everything. They picked us off, whilst only going in second gear.

No!!!! That was years ago (Euro 2008 qualifier). Yes, we were outclassed that particular game, but we've played the Germans 3 times since then and haven't been outclassed in any of them.

The 'plucky loser' tag hasn't been used for quite some time. Get the chip off your shoulder Germany looked a class apart to me in 3 of the 4 games. Frankfurt was the only time we got even close to them. Wayne kept us in the game that night with some belting saves.

Ok, maybe I have generally tried to ignore recent reports of Wales rugby games against the big nations because they used to do my head in. I hope the 'plucky loser' thing has been lost- it's about time. I will try and get the chip of my shoulder.
Did you really think the Germans 'outclassed' us in both the recent qualifying games?! OK, fine if you do, but I really didn't see either game that way. You want to see the Germans really 'outclass' a team? watch a repeat of that game against Austrlalia.

er... I will get the chip off my shoulder soon (promise!) but just before I do, I decided to have a quick peek at the 2 most recent BBC match reports of Wales games against the All Blacks: news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/welsh/8342240.stmnews.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/welsh/7741343.stmIn the 1st paragraph of first report is the phrase 'gutsy effort' and the first paragraph of the second 'brave performance'. Doesn't seem like the plucky loser thing has been completely lost yet, does it? Ok, just wanted to do that to prove that I'm not just making things up- The chip has now been chucked!

The tactical ineptitude on show makes you appreciate what you've got. What on earth has that Italian bloke been thinking these last weeks? Hope they keep him on for the qualifiers. Switzerland cant attack, England cant do anything - good tournament for Wales all in.

England cant do anything - good tournament for Wales all in. Don't let your scadenfreude confuse your objective analysis. On the Qualifiers Watch thread the general theme is that England have first place sewn up and it's a race for second for the rest. There's been other posts on this board to the effect that we might even struggle to finish above fourth. England were, and still are, massive favourites to stroll our next group

"Don't let your scadenfreude confuse your objective analysis."
Please stop trying to spoil my moment!
Whatever everyone's saying about who's favourites to finish top of the qualifiers, one thing's for sure: England are less favourite to top the group now than before the world cup started. We're gonna be playing a rebuilding side, rather than a unchanged winning team. Can only be good news.
I stand by my point that it was a good world cup for Wales.

england will win the group; it is a very easy group for them to win - irrespective of their situation.
capello is gone - done. i imagine that redknapp will get the job over hodgson due to the media backing he will get. i think that he will do well, up to a point, but will ultimately suffer in the same way that keegan did - he's a chequebook club manager. still, they could field a B team a probably still come out as first.
we can take points off them though, i believe that. this is a group where we HAVE to challenge for second.

England will PROBABLY win the group ( I take all your predictions with a pinch of salt, Trendy, following your assurances on the ds messageboard that there was no way Spurs would finish 4th last season!)
The thing with England is, they will drop points. They always do- even during the last campaign with eveyone going on about how smooth it was, they still lost to the Ukraine, which helped them finish above Croatia in a play off spot. Why couldn't they drop a few points against us? We've got the whole local derby factor in our favour too, which means we might have a better chance against them than the Swiss, Bulgarians or Montenegrans.
And remember, they finished 3rd in the group in their last Euro champs qualifying group. Unlike Germany, or even Italy, ENGLAND DON'T ALWAYS QUALIFY. We've got a much better chance of upsetting the odds with England as our group's top seeds, than we'd have if it was Germany (again!), Holland, Spain or even Italy. But it would still be upsetting the odds.
I agree that we all (players, management, FANS) simply HAVE to believe we can challenge for second.
