It seems FAW is pulling out all the stops these days to grab all the young english talent with welsh grannies they can get hold of but its worth remembering one that went the other way. If you don't remember him Sheedy was a very classy attacking midfielder for Everton in the 80's and nineties and having him on board might even have made the difference to us continually failing qualification campaigns. Here's his story anyway of how he got away and it doesn't reflect too well on the above mentioned entity. Why Sheedy went for Ireland

it's an interesting read for me that. But if Sheedys heart was for Wales he would of waited. Clearly felt as much Irish and Welsh....Maybe more Irish.
Looking at Irelands under 21's and 19's it's interesting to see how their still on the ball such as with Grealish and Keown etc. They never miss a trick and i'm glad these days that we don't either.

Agree that it doesn't reflect too well on the FAW at the time, although I don't think that it tells the whole story. If I remember there was talk locally that his Irish dad had some involvement in him choosing Ireland. I can't quite remember what it was, something along the lines of his Dad 'encouraging' him to represent Ireland. I think that this was right at the start of Football Associations looking at eligibility of players who weren't born and bred in the country, with Ireland's FAI ahead of the game. (I can remember people joking that Ireland's FAI stood for Find Another Irishman). Although Kevin was born in Builth, I think that a few years after the Sheedy family had moved to just outside Hereford, so he wouldn't have been in Wales' schoolboy / county 'system' as such at that time.

Great player, great left foot on him... Born in Builth Wells, he would have been a major asset had he joined the Wales team of that era.
Still held in high esteem by Evertonians and Republic of Ireland fans. Won the League with Everton twice, and scored important FA Cup and European goals for his club. Also, the first-ever Republic of Ireland player to score a goal at the World Cup finals (1990).

...And, to add a modern day note (having referred to Builth), Brennan Johnson - who fortunately did plump for Wales - has strong family links with nearby Rhayader.
"My mum's mum and dad come from Rhayader in mid Wales. They are really proud Welsh people".
