As much as I don't like to say it, the national anthem has been over played by our fans today in my opinion. Part of me feels like it has lost its spirit value today.

I disagree. Think it was sung twice and I had goosebumps both times. My only annoyance was Barry Horne talking over the top of it.

I agree. It was great watching the Belgians be shell-shocked by it towards the end of that game, but singing it whilst we were cluelessly trying to break down the Israeli wall - not so great.

I also agree, the spontaneity of it against Belgium was spine-tingling, it is in danger of becoming a cliche.

Indeed. It should be sung 10 minutes from time when we are winning... not 3 or 4 times when it is 0-0.

Sounded better when sung by the fans only than when it was led by a singer at the start.

I heard it at least 3 times, I'm sure there were a couple more.
I could understand it the first time or two, as it may have lifted the players a bit, but for it to be attempted twice within 10 minutes, it started to seem more like one fan felt it was the only song they could start, so repeated it over and over.
I do like the idea of singing the anthem, and I don't want it stopped, I just think anything more than say once a half it seems too forced to have the same impact in my opinion, and by the sounds of it many fans agreed as they got quieter

It was sung twice, once in each half. Then I heard it a third time but this time sang half heartedly which suggest many people felt it was too much. Personally I think the reason it was so good against Belgium was that it was so spontaneous. I didn't like it being sung today, feels over done.

Could hear it twice in the coverage. First time I was like "Barry Shut the fuck up" Who talks over their own anthem!?

Well done to the band as well.
We need some more songs.

From where I am, I heard the anthem started in decent numbers at least four times during the game. It only really took off properly twice, once in each half. We had planned to start playing it towards the end of the second half as we did against Belgium, but by then I think a combination of singing it a few times and the fact that we weren't ahead dampened the enthusiasm for it. Most fans seemed too nervous to sing in the last ten minutes.

From where I stood (Canton Stand), I heard it at least four times during the match and completely agree that the lack of spontaneity, coupled with the fact that we weren't actually winning, lost much of the impact evident at the Belgium match.

In cyprus the crowd was totally off the track! Was quite funny to listen to...
But yes, the national anthem should be a one off!

I heard the anthem four times during the match yesterday.
I wonder if the game being at night played it's part in the anthem sounding so fantastic versus Belgium. Just felt right under the floodlights.

don't know why the faw get someone to sing the anthem before the game they always seem out of time with crowd! Totally agree. It was particularly bad in the rugby the other week. The ridiculously OTT singer a good bar ahead of the fans. Totally ruined it. I don't get it personally, our anthem stands alone in terms of its melody. Its a proper 'song'. Leave the wailing singers for the other anthems, all ours needs is a bit of a brass band to hold the tune and keep time and let everyone in the stadium actually be heard singing it.

If only we had a group of football mad Welshmen capable of stringing together a few tunes on brass instruments who could do this for us.

If we had a national anthem like England's that is a dirge and praises some over rich privelaged fascist saluting lizard without even mentioning our country then I would have a problem, but we have one of the best most patriotic national anthems on the planet so we shouldn't be complaining.
Don't compare it to what happened in the Belgium game because that was always going to be a one off memorable event.
We may be missing a lot of things as a nation, but having an amazing national anthem isn't one of them, and a lot of our opponents supporters love it. So please continue.

I agree that we have a great national anthem, and we should be singing it in games. I just think we've got to pick our moments. Don't sing it loads of times during a game, otherwise it starts to lose a bit of that spark

I am sure it will eventually die down, but lets not forget how little opportunity we get to sing it as a whole because the English have basically stolen our sporting teams under the name of Britain.
We only really have the footy and the rugby, while everything else is just shitting out that sycophantic dirge.

Again, I agree we don't get a huge number of chances to sing it, but I don't think that justifies trying to sing it as often as it was on Sunday. Once a half is enough in my opinion

I agree with OP, Against Belgium it was special, and visibly helped the players and got them over the line. On sunday though it was too predictable. The Anthem in my opinion is a 'special song' sung at special moments!!

I agree re, singing of the anthem, the more we use it the less impact it will have, we're going to have very important games in next 12, months let's keep it for when we really need it as inspiration for the lads to run that extra yard, make that extra tackle
