I'm in the same boat as you with regards to the new credit card thing. I rang up Barclaycard and they said the 'e-commerce transaction limit' is the same as my credit limit. I tried asking if giving them the Merchant ID number is any good but said there is nothing they can do from their end. They just advised using the card as often as you can before the payment goes out.
I was going to try and speak to HSBC as well see if they can do anything. Other than that I'll just keep buying petrol with it and maybe book a hotel for the trip with it to test paying in euros!
I am also with BarclayCard and I rang their Fraud Department directly and a nice Indian chap was happy to make a note on my account that will start on 1 February and be active all month. They are 0800 318 665 or landline is 01452 828 309
THIS is their web page
Good luck!

I rang my credit card company to make them aware of a possible large payment to UEFA in the next few weeks. They stated they would make a note but could not guarantee!! Thankfully, similar to you my payments (in Euros) for accommodation were accepted immediately so this is hopefully a good sign I just did the same with my card company and same response. Generally you only have a couple of probs, one that you have paid off thr card or made min payment within the month so the card is 'good'. Two, that the bank doesn't get suspicious of foreign payment - be unlucky with this one tbh.

These transactions are very low risk for the credit card companies in so much that the goods will be despatched a long time after the card has been used.
Exceeding your credit limit could be more of an issue particularly if you applied for a couple of tickets, through to the final and allowed the upgrade. You could pretty quickly get into several thousand.
Incorrectly filling your details or having your card scammed and having to cancel it is my concern.
The biggest concern though. The price of a pint in France has risen 10% since November !
