I'm looking for the best deal on a tariff for using a fair bit of data whilst out in France and would welcome any advice. I will be using wifi in hotels but we are driving about 2000 miles so not spending too much time in them! I'm on a contract with Virgin which suits me for this country but is £20 for 250mb abroad. I'll be keeping his contract I've looked at the pay as you go "3 Feel at home" offer - £10 sim with £20 add on which gives you 300 minutes chat, 3000 texts and unlimited data and lasts for 30 days. www.three.co.uk/Store/SIM/Pay_As_You_GoHas anyone on here seen any better deal? thanks in advance

THats prob your best bet unless you want to try your chances with a french sim card. Orange/EE/Tmobile offer the calls for free when abroad, but not data.
You should be able to get a three simcard for free - so save £10

Something like this hippocketwifi.com/en/. I used one when I went to Japan and it was fantastic. Probably get them cheaper than the linked I've shared if you search around.

Just checked it - thanks for the info. I will probably be going with the 3 deal as it will work out cheaper as I'm there for the group games and then back till we get knocked out!

I'm on O2 and their travel plan in Europe isn't bad. £1.99 a day gives unlimited data and 120 texts and 120 minutes to phones in the UK or in Europe.

Just topped my three sim card with £20.
Only to discover they've put it up by £5 for the unlimited data. Grrr. You get 500mins of calls this time tho (I was just going to use WhatsApp)
Still a good deal if you're heavy on data

I have also done the Three! SIM only deal. Anyone know about the actual roaming in France bit - is it only one particular French network that you are allowed to use for free? Does listening to the voice mail count toward the free minutes?
Thanks!

This is their page on France: www.three.co.uk/Support/Roaming_and_international/Mobile_roaming?content_aid=1214306374696Mention anything about specific networks and thinking about it, the phone automatically swaps around the networks to use the best signal. for them to say that it's free data roaming and then restrict it would be pretty naughty. In terms of voicemail, yes it does come out of your minutes. You are essentially calling a number back home to access it.

Thanks for that!
At the foot of the THREE! page about France is says under Roaming Partners in France: Bouygues and Free Mobile.
I spoke to an Indian sounding lady at Customer Service and she claimed that my phone should be able to roam freely and only connect to one of those two networks while out there, automatically... She must think that my Blackberry is actually smart ...

You definitely won't need to worry about the network selection, your phone will select the one with the best signal (try doing a network search and selecting a different network than the one you're on in the UK, it will reject you) Also, the two networks we do have access to both have data ticked so we wont have any issues with one network having better signal (and the phone goes for that network) but that network not providing free data. Fortunately the map of coverage looks pretty good. However, according to Wikipedia, the two networks we have are 3rd and 4th in the ranking of networks in France (out of 4)
