MIL being Mother in Law?? F*** me if mine was ill or even close to death I'd still go to France. Whereabouts are you based? What's your nearest airport?

We are going via La Rochelle (with Flybe or monarch I think) It's then a 2 hr train to Bordeaux. Other options are to fly to Brussels then get a connection (cheap), Andorra isn't too far away either, Barcelona too.
Basically try and find a route that's not direct from the UK and it should work out a lot more cost effective.

Gatwick - Toulouse Friday to Sunday is £200, train from Toulouse to Bordeaux is 2 1/2 hrs prob £30-50. London to Paris is £150 and then train
Use Skyscanner to search flights, be flex on airport into and out of as nowt wrong flying into Paris and out of Toulose or Bordeaux

cardiff- Dam - Bordeaux with KLM
My mate is not going, so will prob sell his seat for an agreed fee - if your prepared to pay the name change (prob £60) fly out Wed & back Mon. Unfortunate no accomodation incl. as he dropped out between me finding a hotel after booking flight.
