I usually say we're just over the sea from Ireland. Tell them to look at an atlas. I was told once that Wales was the western part of England by a person who should have known better lol.

In Poland recently and driving on a Motorway and come across an advertising hoarding on a couple of occasions with Giggsy and a couple of Welsh players extolling the virtues of a money transfer business, who they indicating that are a sponsor of Wales. Really was a WTF...................... Could expect it on M4 west of the bridge but Poland ? The Hong Kong Sevens was about 10 days after our China Cup campaign... And I saw a poster with Giggs on it saying something like "if you are not making it to the Sevens, join the Welsh footballing academy" . Cardiff City already have a presence out there, but now it is really getting bigger.

A Swedish girl in one of my college classes lived in London and had no idea where Wales was. She thought Cardiff and Swansea were in England. One of the reasons that I dislike Cardiff being a home venue to England cricket.

It really got me. She'd heard of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland OK. Euro 2016 did something to help our cause.

Another big reason Giggs got the job. Global exposure and gets the world taking an interest in how Wales do.
Personally think national football is taking second place to club football at CL Level.
Not sure why people getting upset with Polish people not knowing where Wales is....................... think if you ask group of school kids in London and with a map then a 10-20% success rate is probable.

You think that only 10-20% of English schoolkids know where Wales is? Or Poland?

Ofsted last report on it was in 2011
Friends daughter is a geography teacher and it is a Grammar school and indicates that finding countrys on maps is a struggle for many pupils.
In week 2 in teaching year 7, she asked people to write down where they went on holidays, then picked half and asked people to highlight on a map where the country was, (not asking each student to show as that would have highlighted not everybody went on holidays.). Out of 15 questions, nobody got 60% and these are the bright kids, 5 /15 was average.
Older one from 2006 but says 20% couldn't find UK on map.

You've recently descended into passive aggressivism. Does it have anything to do with the result?
I travel to Poland regularly.................. may not like it but most people do not know where Wales is.
UK, London yup.
Oh they know of the football team, especially Gareth Bale but that is because of Real Madrid, but knowing where Wales actually is completely different.
Not sure why its such an issue as lets face it most Welsh people would be hard pushed to find Poland on a map, just know it is somewhere in the east.
Not just this all the stuff on the other thread about 'sicknote' etc...

Can we please not wish for trips to Baku. Its bad enough thinking I might have to go there for the actual euros tournament ;-( The Yerevan stadium is ample for 1st timers - and the food as well as the coffee are much better ;-)

Living in Guatemala I have to pick and choose the games. I went to Israel, first three games in France for Euros, I went to Georgia and then Ireland at Cardiff. I would love the Faroe Islands. I think it would filter out most of the f*ckwits too.
I have no issue with being hated on here for this but being raised in Bridgend i also love the rugby. Yes I will be in Japan for three weeks for the RWC. Can’t wait!!!

I only like football but my dad / uncles are in to both. It’s never done anything for me. I don’t mind who we get, really. It’s only Paris I wouldn’t go back to. Maybe 24 hours at a push! Perhaps Romania, Bulgaria or Hungary. I have aspirations to go to Dortmund so via Germany would be nice. Places with lots of travel options so it’s not too expensive.

I'm wishing for a trip to Baku. Even if we qualify there's still only a 1 in 6 chance of being in the right group. I was wondering how they will arrange the groups in terms of travel. For instance Baku is paired with Rome so you could get Baku, Rome, Baku which would be a right pain. Alternatively they could be arranged to limit the travel to one transfer mid group and possibly none for some although I'd prefer not to be based in a single location. I like the look of the Munich Budapest pairing or St Petersburg Copenhagen or Amsterdam Bucharest I'd hate the Wembley Hampden pair and although I'd like Bilbao it comes with Dublin Getting ahead of myself I think

Holland to Romania there are plenty of very cheap flight options. Say what you will about Dublin, but it has plenty of cheap flight options to Spain / Southern France.

Not essential for the euro draw, but good to read that we have risen in the FIFA rankings to 18th. Two more wins next month may get us to 16th.

When travelling around the USA an American thought Wales was a city in Russia. A New Zealander I met told me that an American couldn't understand how he'd managed to fly from NZ to the states as he didn't think NZ was big enough for a runway.

Judging by the quotes here there are a generation of imbeciles growing up all over the world. What has happened to education? Not blaming the kids themselves, if you see some teachers taking part in quiz shows on tv, they're just as bad. I fear for the future!! Football is a great way of learning geography, looking at an atlas and seeing where teams come from.

In fairness, we are a tiny nation in comparison to lots of places.
I took in sweets from Belgrade for the gang at work and a few struggled to place the country it was the capital of. "I feel I should know where that is."
I only knew where Tbilisi was as Manchester City signed Kinkladze from Dinamo. He was one of my favourite footballers growing up. I couldn't tell you the capitals of Slovenia, Turkmenistan or Burkina Faso. Football or music is mainly responsible for me knowing where places are.

Part of the problem with the current Champions League set-up! When I was a kid I knew the capitals of all European countries, partly through football. Now what does the CL teach you? France...Germany...Spain, that's about it!
Jokes aside, I don't think kids are any stupider now than they used to be. There are plenty of ignorant people of all generations.
