Why will he be in a premier league team next season? I'm a Swansea fan and I like joe a lot but he was in the midfield of a team that went down and are now 16th in the championship.Though saying that i'll always want him in the Wales team. In my opinion he will be and I think he'd be an improvement on a lot of the current CM's starting in the PL, particularly in the bottom half of the league.

Cant see Allen leaving Stoke as much as i'd like him to. He's probably not going to be in massive demand from PL teams and he'll be on PL wages at Stoke anyway (why he didn't leave I suspect). I fancy Stoke to throw a lot of money at it next season and make him a centrepiece again, remember their owners are incredibly wealthy.

Is he really staying at Stoke then?
He's too good for the championship, but playing at that level hasn't hampered his performances for Wales.

Disappointed for Joe that he's not got the rewards his abilities justify - but it won't make difference to his performance level for Wales. It just shows how many clubs below the top 6 still put so much emphasis on box-to-box athleticism and physique over technique and football intelligence.

Strange that someone like bournemouth haven't gone for him. He's a bi upgrade on their current midfield options - gosling, arter etc. and he'd fit nicely into their style of play. I watched them a bit towards the end of last season because of brooks/mepham and their midfield, particularly lerma, are awful.
I think his standing among english fans, with many seeing him as a bit of a joke (wrlsh xabi etc.), works against him. Last preseason there were rumours of newcastle interested in him which quickly cooled offer after the reaction of their fans.

Good points iot - but would a club like Bournemouth allow such nonsense to put them off? I think in the case of a club like Bournemouth there's an emphasis on recruiting young players with a view to selling them on. This is obviously a problem with Allen getting on a bit. In a way he's got the same problem as Bale - but on a lesser order of magnitude. High wages and being "old" are two big deterrents for smaller, selling clubs like Bournemouth.

Remind me of Swansea tbh.

Maybe he tasted the weekly pressure at a big club like liverpool and didn't fancy it again. Pogba could do with Allen tidying things up for him, like Kante does for France.

As a Bournemouth fan I can tell you, without a shadow of a doubt, that Lerma is the furthest thing from "awful". Our midfield plays awful, but that's because EH insists on playing 2 in midfield, which makes any CMs we use look terrible. We also had almost half of our squad out injured last season. I would have had Allen for sure as an option, but don't see that happening now with us signing Billing. We have great players like Lewis Cook, Lerma and hopefully Billing, and then squad depth with Gosling, Surman and Arter. Not sure why Newcastle would react like that tbh, he's certainly better than anyone they have.

I can't see Allen leaving this summer which is in fact a travesty. Looks like he'll be plying his trade in the second tier for the rest of his career, as this time next year he'll be the wrong side of 30, and will have played for Stoke in the Championship for two seasons, meaning no one in the Premier League will take a punt on him. He should have left last summer rather than signing a new deal, hoping to bounce back straight away.

I'm pretty sure his new deal last year was only a short extension on an already long contract. It was basically a sweetener for the bitter pill he had to take when Stoke insisted that they wouldn't sell him. Allen is too decent to kick up a fuss in this sort of situation, which reflects well on him as a man, but his career has suffered the consequence of his integrity.
Bournemouth signing Billing instead of Allen pretty much reflects why Allen is missing out, with even more progressive sides like Bournemouth tending towards athletic, physical players over smaller, more technical players. A bit depressing really.

Not sure why Newcastle would react like that tbh, he's certainly better than anyone they have. Fair enough, you'll know more about Lerma's ability than me! My assessment of him was on the basis of a couple appearances where he seemed to be very athletic and good at breaking up play, but very wasteful on the ball and with pretty poor technique overall. Allen is an excellent disruptive force and also has great technique, so I think he's an upgrade on Lerma and Billing, but again I'm basing that on watching those players in a very limited number of game. I think alarch's right though, there's a general tendency in the prem to favour athletic midfielders which is a shame as I think Allen would have been much cheaper and a better option for you.
