Chris started his footballing path in Cardiff and moved to Manchester at age 11. Doing well for the U16s, scored 3 goals at the recent Victory Shield and just scored again today v Czech Rep.
This is a FAW Trust write-up from November 2019

Surely must have some Bulgarian family somewhere down the line with a name like Popov?

Interesting - I hope this means a football league loan for next season. Seeing him in League Two would be good

Shows how much Bulgaria have fallen since their nineties glory days that they are scraping around for players who haven't established themselves at Under-21 club level yet. Still we've done it in the past. Can't see much opportunity for making tournaments with the current quality of the Bulgaria squad though, there is nobody of premier league standard there.

Nationality is becoming increasingly complex, football status can change over the years, but Popov is an exciting young player and hopefully has an exciting future with us.

Well it does not sound good does it?
Bulgaria’s goal is to qualify for Euro 2024Bulgaria’s goal is to qualify for Euro 2024
“I hope the players will prepare well and be in shape for the qualifiers, which start in March,” said Georgi Ivanov
The technical director of the Bulgarian Football Union Georgi Ivanov – Gonzo revealed the main goal of Bulgaria – qualifying for the European Championship in 2024. He stated in an interview with Darik that an Augsburg player with Bulgarian roots is expected to get a passport and help the Lions in the upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers.
“I think everything is fine for now. I hope the players will prepare well and be in shape for the qualifiers that start in March. There is nothing to talk about – the goal is to qualify for the European Championship,” said Georgi Ivanov. He added that the goal is to win every game and he doesn’t think that the high expectations will weigh him down.
“It’s always easier when you have results. Until half an hour ago, we were together with Mladen Krstaich and we were discussing which football players are healthy. We emphasize on footballers who have worked abroad and join them to the national teams in order to catch the most players who have Bulgarian citizenship. I have stated that the players should come to the national team willingly, because they are protecting their own honor and that of Bulgaria,” said Gonzo.
“We are now trying to arrange footballers, for example one footballer from Augsburg (b.a. Lukas Petkov) and there is also a player who is in the Wales under-21 team. We hope to be able to arrange passports for them soon so that they can help of the team in March,” added the BFS technical director
I am a bit shocked he wants to play for Bulgaria on so many levels. Not exactly great for his career playing for them and it just adds travel disruption. Hope he is not that good a prospect!

Would he be a massive loss?
Ive seen him play a few times for our youth teams and can’t say he’s stood out at all. Not sure what he’s like for Leicesters youth though…..
Bulgaria are awful though, so maybe he fancies his chances of playing for their senior side?
Interesting that his social media accounts dont mention he’s an @faw player.

The problem is that he’s an excellent prospect. I trust the FAW to do everything in their power to retain him. Bit of a weird one has he’s seemed very proud to play for us and has only today shared that Bale retirement post on Instagram.

So you know or is that a guess? The article sounded like they were get him a Bulgarian passport so that he could play for them! Really weird why he would want to. Wales will need a #9 in the next couple of years! Why would you leave a set up close to your club close to players you have known for years to play with a bunch of strangers? As stated Bulgaria are in a right mess too in footballing terms. Makes no sense?

He’s a youth player at a PL club right? In the past few years we’ve been calling up players who were at that level - Ampadu, Levitt, Neco, Smith and now Luke Harris. We even called up Colwill who was a ch’ship youth player. Maybe he feels like he’s not getting a look in? Bit fetching maybe…
What sets Luke Harris apart from Popov for example?

Well lets make sure we do not regret seeing him leave, as his former U21 boss Paul Bodin did a crap job with the kids under his charge. Promising #9s do not grow on trees in Wales so I hope someone is giving him enough love to persuade him to bide his time with us!

Obviously football is subjective, but he’s always stood out to me! He’s looked like a key player, particularly playing for the 17’s and 19’s. He would be a disappointing loss. Always seemed a proud Welshman! I thought he was a Cardiff boy.

Whoever is in the know - look to engage with him / show him the future he could have with Wales?
Players are always at a low when they are injured and a goodwill visit from team mates / FAW at times like this can go a long way!
He should not be looking at Bulgaria for opportunities - that would be a sad loss for a good prospect!

I hope someone in the FAW is in contact with him and discussing things! I know there is no guarantee but he has a decent strike rate! Bulgaria can promise the world but Wales can emphasise the pathway followed by many of our young players and emphasise that there is only an old Moore playing his role, and so if he develops further and is good enough then he has a big future soon with a team that has qualified for 3 out of the last 4 tournaments (unlike Bulgaria) Article from April: Leicester City may already have the next Jamie Vardy in their ranks www.leicestermercury.co.uk/sport/sport-opinion/leicester-city-jamie-vardy-popov-6961711Seventeen-year-old striker Chris Popov has scored an incredible 20 goals in 24 appearances at under-18 level this season, including 18 in 20 league games. It is his first year at the level having been released by Manchester United as an under-16 towards the end of last season.

That article is suggesting it’s Popov and I know it’s 99% likely but just saying you could get 100/1 odds on it being someone else. Maybe this is why Chem Campbell can’t get a game

It might just be a case of him wanting to see what their set up is like. I wouldn't worry too much, I'm confident what we offer is better than what Bulgaria offer. If he leaves despite that then he probably feels quite strongly about being Bulgarian, in which case, good for him! He should go with his heart
