Just seen this on Twitter - Nations League A looks a bit terrifying! Personally I think I'd choose France/Spain, then Portugal/Netherlands and Poland, based on away venues I haven't been to, but we'll probably get Italy, Germany, England knowing our luck. And the FAW will play them at the Millennium Stadium....

Spain, Germany, Switzerland/Poland please.
We’re going down anyway, may as well enjoy the ride!

That's going to be a shocker of a group, I'd like Denmark again, unfinished business, a decent ref that won't just book Moore for being 6ft 5 and one that will tell the Danish players to get up. We need Page gone by the time these games come around unless he really turns the tide.

Just hope our ranking doesn’t take too much of a hit! Last thing we need is starting to get drawn in tough qualifying groups again

I wouldn't mind so much if we drew England in this, compared to a qualifying group or at a major tournament. I can't see us surviving whatever but these games aren't as important as others in the grand context of things. Scotland had like 20k away fans at Wembley before so maybe we could take a big following? Even if it was just the 5% that's still 4500 tickets for us. Only hope the FAW would play the home game at the CCS though, but they may see the £££££ of the Principality Stadium too good to turn down after covid, should it happen.

However, Mark Evans did a podcast, the one with 2 Welsh living in the US I believe(?), before the Euros and said the Spain experiment wasn't a success (but he didn't say to what extent).

That's interesting, didn't we get a good crowd for Spain though? I know we got battered but it was at least 50,000 from memory My thinking is that due to COVID the FAW will take any chance to get more money in they can take, and big glamour ties at the Millennium are a way of doing that Either that or £50 tickets at the CCS!

Well there's no way in blue hell I'll be going if games are held in the PS/MS. The Spain match was awful - the parking, the shite atmosphere, disinterested fans, no connection with the pitch, people sitting around me chatting as if they were in a coffee shop. Terrible.

It's not my first choice either, but I don't understand the idea that fans would actually not go to the game because of the venue. Play it in Aberystwyth and I'll get there if I can (and I live in London).

No I know, it's quite extreme to not go, but moving games to the MS/PS would dilute everything that's been built at in the CCS. Not saying the CCS is a fortress or anything, but we're a small footballing nation and there's no requirement for a 70,000+ stadium. Hardly any countries in Europe play in 70k stadiums. Plus it's owned by the WRU and I wouldn't want to fill their pockets either.

The first tier of the Millennium is so bad, if you're far back enough you're under the overhang of the middle tier.

When the FAW were regularly playing there before, the WRU were supposed to be charging them £1m a game. I was told that Tan was charging the FAW a nominal fee to use the CCS. Based on that they would have to sell a load more tickets to make it viable.

More like £100k probably.

Yeah he didn't really expand just saying it wasn't really a success, which I felt was a bit odd as 50k for a friendly on a Thursday night I'd say is pretty successful! He must mean in terms of logistics or player/coaching staff feedback. Maybe even with the supporters?

Yeah, that's what I meant £100k a game (dunno why on earth I typed a million)! It was exactly £100k that was negotiated in the lease terms between the FAW and WRU back in 2000. I read that it has since been renegotiated, but have no idea what it was changed to. The FAW have in fact had a contract with the WRU to play a minimum 3 games a year (at £100k a pop) at the MS since 2000. It was a 21 year contract so ironically runs out this year.

So does that mean we are, and have been wasting £300,000 a year with this contract? No, pay-as-you-play from my understanding. The contract was to ensure the FAW didn't have to pay more than £100K per match on those 3 occasions (should they have wished to use the MS), if they needed to use it for a 4th+ time in a calendar year the cost would have been higher. The expiration is why they're renegotiating now, probably not for Wales to play there, more for future potential events such as Champions' League/Europa bids and so on. Better to have a concrete deal in place and not need to use it rather than need it at short notice and have to pay through the nose as the WRU extorts them with their prices!

Just hope our ranking doesn’t take too much of a hit! Last thing we need is starting to get drawn in tough qualifying groups again I think being in league A now guarantees us a place in pot 2 for the Euro 2024 draw. 6 defeats would see our FIFA ranking take a knock but I'm really looking forward to it. 4 games in 2 weeks in June, it could take on the feel of a tournament in its own right. Just hoping for a nice double away header in that. Bigger stadiums, so hopefully no issues with those who want to go getting tickets. Of course if we qualify for Qatar then a lot could be saving like mad.

Id imagine that give the red wall membership is covering this as well, that the play off semi, final (or friendly), and the three home nations league games will be sold initially as a five game package. Would make a lot of sense.
