Draw incoming next Tuesday, it's going to be a tough watch. Historically, Ireland usually have a good defence so for Latvia to score 2 is a worry. On another note, Ireland look to have overtaken us in terms of squad quality sadly. Have they? There's a couple of good prospects but they only have 7 top 5 league players (the 3 keepers and a 34 year old Coleman being 4 of those). They have an exciting talent in Ferguson in the same way we do in Johnson. Much like us it's a pretty bland midfield but they've no one anywhere near the quality of Ramsey, both he and Ampadu stroll into their midfield. I probably wouldn't take any of their defenders over ours, maybe Collins over Rodon. I don't think there's a great deal between either of us, however I think our recent record of qualification has given our fairly young players (the 21-25 range) some very good experience early on that will help us

My concern would be them having an extra 2 days to recover, plus our travel plans back from Croatia, either very late on saturday or travelling very close to the actual game?

Ferguson looks like he’ll be a generational talent, on a seriously top level. It’s obviously early days but my hunch is he’s a world class prospect that we just don’t have right at this moment

It's always a negative for a double header to be away-home, instead of the other way around. You'd rather have Latvia at home first, then go out to Split with three points in the bag (fingers crossed), instead of returning to Cardiff slightly dispirited having suffered what is likely to be a defeat. At least in June, we host Armenia first then go out to Turkey.

On another note, Ireland look to have overtaken us in terms of squad quality sadly. I was actually quite underwhelmed when looking at that Irish squad. Might be my own ignorance, but they looked fairly average across the board. Having said that, if you compared out squads name by name I guess a case could be made for them edging it. They seem to have experimented a fair bit tonight so I don't think there's too much you can read into Latvia's performance. If anything, it should be a good warning sign for us going into the game and ensure there's no complacency. I just hope Saturday night won't have taken too much out of us! Agreed, there seems to be a strange tendency on here to overstate how good Ireland & Scotland are and bemoan the "fact" that we're falling behind when it isn't really the case

I don't think they have any players at League 1 level, yet we have quite a few now.

The general thrust of your comment is that they have more players, but not better players - so more depth, but not necessarily better quality. I would agree with that - our starting xi probably edges theirs with Ramsey and Ampadu in midfield, Johnson is better than anything they have upfront currently (Feguson's a brilliant prospect, but Johnson is a little ahead of him currently) and hopefully Brooks will get back to what he's capable of. It's much of a muchness at the back, although I would say Ben Davies is an upgrade on anything they have + I have faith that Neco will push on in the next couple of years. They definitely have the advantage in goal, but that's it. I also think we have some superb prospects coming through, and in the next 2-3 years we'll have some very good players in our first xi who are yet to be capped. I'm thinking of: Luke Harris, Ed Turns, Charlie Savage, Jadan Raymond, Gabriele Biancheri, Iwan Morgan, Freddie Issaka, Charlie Crew, Lewys Benjamin. There's a good chance that Rubin Colwill will come good eventually too. Not all of those will fulfil their potential, but there's a massive amount of talent there and I suspect a couple of those players will have made a name for themselves within the next couple of years. There's plenty to be positive about.

Moore, approaching 30, doesn't get much minutes. Then we have James who's career stalling badly. After those it's Broadhead, Collins in League 1. Similar story in midfield. They do have a stronger and younger group of players imo.

Nobody anywhere near Ramsey. There's very little creative spark in that squad. They certainly have more depth in midfield, but a midfield of Ramsey, Ampadu & Morell (or even Wilson) is better than any midfield they can put out. Ferguson is their only PL striker and he doesn't play regularly. We have Johnson as a regular and someone like Moore who's proven himself there and internationally. The rest are Championship players none of whom have scored more than Bradshaw this season - Nathan Broadhead has more Championship goals this season than Parrott and Idah put together and as many as Obafemi despite being leaving in January. Cullen also has more than Idah, Parrott & Obafemi. We're too close to it as Wales fans and know all of our players' faults. I imagine plenty of Irish fans look over at a squad containing Johnson, Ramsey, Ampadu (who they're gutted they missed out on), Neco Williams, even Harry Wilson etc and moan about how poor they are in comparison. A big chunk of their squad play for teams in the bottom half of the Championship and there's only 4 outfielders who play in the top 5 leagues in Europe, we have 11. Only 3 members of our squad are in League 1, I wouldn't say that's a fair few.

He was at Wigan, and they didn't seem bothered when he left. I'm sorry but there is no way Irish fans look at Neco and Wilson and think they are missing out. Anyway, like I said, I think we tend to overrate our players. Let's see what happens against Latvia, it's all relevant. If we struggle to put any goals past them when Ireland put 3 on them, then that weakens your argument a bit.

It is tricky to ascertain exactly how many tickets have been sold because it’s impossible to tell how many tickets have been put on sale, but the sales look to have been decent so far. I’m guessing that over 27,000 have been sold, with only the corner of Ninian & Grange having more than singles available in the bowl. Partial blocks of the Ninian Upper have been put on sale, so I think the attendance may nudge 30,000, which for a Tuesday night against Latvia would be excellent. I've looked at the stadium map and don't think it's 27k sold. Bottom tier holds 28k and there's still a couple of thousand to shift near the away end and maybe another block which hasn't yet gone on sale. Top deck has only had the front half of a couple of sections gone on sale yet. I'd guess about 22k sold so far, expect 25k on the night. Quite a few have shifted in the top deck over the past couple of days. The front 2/3rds of all but the 2 end sections have gone on sale. Maybe 26/27k on the night

There's no way you genuinely believe Ireland have a midfielder as good as Ramsey in their squad. Last season Wilson and Williams put in Championship seasons better than anything their squad of Championship players have done, I imagine an Irish fan would feel their missing out if they look at our options. I have no idea why you're pretending their midfield is anything other than average, I can tell you as someone who's watched lots of these guys in the Championship over the years, they're nothing special. Cullen is the best of them. There could be any number of reasons he isn't in the Championship, but the facts are he outscored guys that you're saying make up a stronger attack than ours. Bradshaw and Cullen have also outscored these shining prospects. Sure, let's see what happens, there's absolutely no difference between a friendly and a qualifier is there... Ireland certainly have more depth, that's to be expected, but we have a better starting XI. It would be a close fought match as it usually is against Ireland

I'm concerned about our goal threat for this one. Latvia showed on Wednesday night that they have goals in them while we showcased just how impotent we can be in the World Cup. Since then we've had retirements, injuries and ongoing injuries. Slip up in this and we're probably facing a play off game against a half decent side in what should be our easiest qualifying group ever. I've been telling myself that the whole set up will be taking this seriously, then I read that we just accepted that Forest were keeping Brennan even though he proved he wasn't injured.

I've got this horrible vision of it being tight early on with Latvia growing into the game as we haven't done our homework, Ampadu killing himself for the cause, getting frustrated, halfing someone and seeing red. Then an uphill struggle just to keep it at 0-0 as we look toothless up top. Please say it ain't so, I'm not ready for us to be shit again, I was still really, really enjoying it all.

When you have average players you need a good manager to make the whole better than the sum of the parts. This does not seem to be happening
I was disappointed with how poor we were in terms of performance under Page for most of his early matches but he got excellent results in the nations league and got us qualified for the WC.
The pathetic showing versus Denmark in the Euros provided a warning but we could write that off as Page being more inexperienced and the assumption that he will have learned a lot
However, I can't forgive him for his amateur approach to the WC, the committee, his approach to preparation, training and playing unfit players and taking players past their sell by date who were never going to contribute anything. The lack of energy in the WC is one of the most embarrassing showing by any Welsh team - it was up there with our Welsh rugby team nearly losing by a 100pts versus South Africa.
He forgot that at elite sport you need to keep pushing yourselves and try to work harder than everyone - even if you are a top team, which we certainly weren't. This social club vibe was beyond amateur. The players do not love each other - sure Bale and Hennessey and Ramsey and Gunter are friendly but you want players wanting to rip the shirts off their direct competition for a spot. Taking training easy, preparing with a lack of intensity - when you are a bang average team - well no surprise with what happened
We got away with all of the above prior to the WC thanks to Bale - his contribution versus Austria was just crazy - but it led to our embarrassing performance at the WC and this incident with Johnson suggests to me he just does not have the capacity to develop / grow. However, we are stuck with him for 4 years.
I hope I am wrong and he gets us comfortably qualified but he is looking more like a failed Port Vale manager at the moment.

Would like to see a braver team selection on Tuesday. Does Dan James or Wilson read that throw like match fit Broadhead did?
Ward
Roberts - Meps - Rodon - Fox (thought Neco looked a liability at LB)
Ampadu - Morrell
Ramsey
Neco - Bradshaw - Broadhead
