Js Jsf Mry and the fkn wee Dnki Shades of Anfield 77 ! How was that a penalty but the shove on Johnson wasnt !! JJ will be playing for a top 4 side within 5 yrs, best player on the pitch. His partnership with Ampadu is the main reason for optimism from this campaign. Credit to Wilson as well though. JJ is a beast. Just 19 but you wish Robert and Brennan had 10% of his strength. Outmuscles men off the ball but hardly loses the ball, always looks forward as his first option, has good awareness of the game around him and has a good range of passing and unlike several of our plays tends to pass the ball 'ahead' of the man. Central midfield was our weakness and Page got lucky with him and yet we still messed it all up.

Also, no suspensions for playoffs. Much to Connor Roberts annoyance it seems

There's a proper team in this squad somewhere. We've played well against Croatia & Turkey very good sides, so we can do it. Just need to be more savvy and tactical away from home

Also, no suspensions for playoffs. Much to Connor Roberts annoyance it seems Roberts is crying out to be dropped. Come March he will likely have not featured too much for Burnley either. We’ve got other full backs in the squad, so there are options. If only RND had not had his injury, we could switch Neco to right back.

Apart from bringing on Moore earlier I can't really fault Page tonight. The players were out on their feet after the Armenia game, but there were no realistic alternatives for the defensive seven.

The Croatia win and Turkey draw just makes it seem better.

We shouldn't be sniffy about any goals, given that we don't score enough.

First half was real glimpse of our future and it looked good.
Second half looked fairly comfortable if muted and we should be two/three goals ahead.
What appears to be a dodgy penalty gets Turkey back into the game.
Subs make us look a bit weaker and Page takes off Neco for Kieffer with attackers visibly confused.
It's so close to being so good again but Page has missed the chance to rest Brennan a bit, missed the chance to introduce depth with Neco sub (Da Silva and Huggins were ready for minutes) and ultimately we all leave slightly frustrated. He's such a difficult manager to analyse fairly.
Onto the next. The next games matter so let's get behind the team again and see what happens.

Avoid Ukraine and get the final at home then all of a sudden I'm feeling confident on the back of the last two home performances. There's still some question marks about March though
Where does Ramsey fit in?
Does Mepham come straight back in?
If Roberts doesn't play for Burnley do we need to shuffle around the wing backs?
What's our best forward line against a team like Iceland/Finland?
How do we churn out results away from home? Are different personnel needed?
Positives: 5-2-3 at home seems to work, and works with different combinations of forwards
Negatives: Away from home we can't do the same things and need to problem solve quickly. We look like a team who needs a Nations League campaign

It was more of a 3-4-2-1 tonight, and the wing backs being pushed further forwards compared to the Armenia game made a difference in the first half.

Yeah might as well use the long throw. In open play I think he had a ridiculous assists record. I like Roberts as he seems like he's a bit of a s..house but for some reason he hasn't been like that for a long time. I could see bits of it today. I think every team needs one of those.

He has to find a club who'll let him be himself though. He has to go back to Swansea in my opinion. Kompany just seems to want to be a Guardiola 2.0. Want being the main word.

Expanding on my earlier point about subs:
Dan James was the only one who made real positive contribution off the bench. On for Harry Wilson made sense and timing made sense as well.
I thought Kieffer Moore would come on for Brennan Johnson and maybe come on earlier. I'm not against change in formation in theory but it looked to confuse the players for 2-3 mins and exposed us defensively as Lockyer not the quickest. Kieffer did fine on the pitch but I didn't like the theory.
Brooks looked fantastic against Croatia at home but didn't hit those standards this time. He's got a big role to play going forward but I want to see more.
Once we knew our game mattered less I would have played long game with giving minutes to new players to build depth.
Page has been criticised for avoiding subs and making them too late - sometimes fairly, sometimes not - but I would say something a bit different this time.

Having watched the game on MOTD Wales highlights we could have been given 4 penalties. The first one may have started with contact outside the box, but continued with contact in the box. The second, although the defender gets the ball eventually, he did so after bringing Johnson down. Clear pen. The third was the most ridiculous decision ever, the clearest penalty you'll ever see. The Wilson one in the second half, the defender stands on his foot - I've seen them given. Then the Davies one - so soft, although I wouldn't complain if it wasn't for the penalties denied us.
Will UEFA apologise to us for the incompetent officiating? It would happen in the Premier League. Simply unacceptable.

We don't have a player who can connect midfield & attack the way he can and he still has the legs to put in a proper shift. I still feel we could go to a 4231 now we have a more solid base in James & Ampadu

We tested him In a friendly before Latvia - there were alternatives. BUT If it didn’t work it would be pages team selection fault of course. What a player though! He just imposes himself on the game where others have failed. He’s one of the best I’ve seen come through in a long time! Best player on the pitch last night

I'm sorry, but we didn't deserve the win. We deserved a penalty, but deserved a win? Not for me. I don't want to hear that Page was responsible for that. The players produced the 50 min performance. Then a manager needs to manage things. He watches and reacts too late all the time. James must be unfit? The amount of times Broadhead lost the ball for all his energy - you can't lose it 6+ times with limited pressure when you can easily pass it on. That would cost us against a top team That's nonsense. There are momentum swings in every football game, you can't make substitutions every time that happens. Some times you have to trust the guys on the pitch to ride it out. Turkey were applying some pressure, but how many meaningful chances did they create at the beginning of the second half? They only got back in due to a terrible refereeing decision. It's a nonsense to say that Page never makes early changes in an attempt to change the momentum. You only need to go back to the Armenia game where he brought Johnson on for Brooks at 48mins - how much good did that do? He was getting pelters for making that change after the game. He also brought DJ quite early in that game, with him playing some of it at LWB, so he obviously doesn't mind making big changes to personnel and the system. Feel slightly irritated with all these things being said with hindsight, and the constant contradictions in it all. Sometimes in football things go against you and you don't get what you deserve. Last night was one of those occasions. I think the performance was very good and we deserved the win as others have said, so Page deserves credit for that. Equally, the performance in Armenia wasn't good enough - we couldn't seem to hit the levels we know we're capable of and, for some bizarre reason, failed to show more fight in that game. Some of that could potentially be attributed to Page, so fair enough he gets criticized for that. But if we look at things in the round over the course of the campaign, I would say there have been: - two excellent performances (Croatia and Turkey home) - one good performance (Latvia away) - two average performances (Latvia home and Croatia away) - two poor performances (Armenia and Turkey away) - one shocking performance (Armenia home) So a real mixed bag, but on the whole just about on par with what we could expect (maybe slightly below) in terms of performances and points tally. We ended with 12pts when a fair expectation would have been 14. Given that we've played well in 5 of the last 6 games, I really don't see the case for sacking Page at this point.

I guess in the cold light of morning and putting our hopes aside we are third best team in that group behind regular world class operators Croatia and and Turkey that seem back where they have been for years after a fall in form for awhile, the armenia games are what have shaken us all i think, but we have to be real.these teams no matter what their ranking sadly seem to pass and move as good or better than us in long stretches of games.Just hope for some luck in the draw and games for play offs, with our form and fragile mentality at present we will need it.

Play-offs here we come. As has been voiced, Armenia games ruined it for us. Worst referee performance for years against us last night. Why didn't Page make changes straight after the Turkey goal, we'd been struggling for a few minutes before that. Brennan Johnson is not any sort of target man, another average performance from him. Either Page doesn't know how to utiise him, he's struggling a bit with us, or he's out if his depth (which I doubt judging his club form and the massive transfer fee to Spurs). First half we played well, second lost our way a bit. Kieffer and Daniel James should have had 25-30 minutes at least (if not starting). Why can't Danny Ward keep the ball in play with his clearances??
