please expand Baresi The point is if people like a manager like Speed a jump in the rankings is proof he is a good manager If they don't like Coleman then a rise in the rankings is proof of how bad the system is. Neither is true Ok - yeah i misunderstood - apologies welshiron - i thought it was an unnecessary dig at Speed. I do think we have to review everything relatively with the rankings though. Had Toshack or Speed been permitted and still with us respectively then where would we be? I reckon around the same ranking or probably even higher. I actually think that our current and continued trend upwards is down to a variety of factors - the continued development of our younger players (Welsh Football Trust work) makes me hope the rise is sustainable, easier & more winnable fixtures, development and starting to peak of the Bale's /Ramsey's /Allen's. And dare I say it but the groundwork by Tosh and Flynn - cue toshfan.........

A higher ranking than we acheived under Speed, maybe he wasn't our only hope. Really hope I don't hear that song in October (or ever) Rankings are calculated over a four year period so Speed's results helped put us here now whilst the poor results before Speed affected where we were then. As for pots and draws, the next draw is the World Cup which is based on rank (Euros are coefficient) so our rank is important for that. As pots are drawn in groups of 9 and we're 19th in UEFA that puts us top of the 3rd pot. We're tied with Scotland but I think there must be some rounding up and down going on. There's no reason we can't be a pot 2 team for the draw next summer. Which would mean avoiding the likes of England, Croatia, Russia, Ukraine, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Romania, Denmark or Czech Republic (as things stand).

We'd pick up a lot of ranking points with a win over Bosnia.

As we have found over the years Pot 3 or Pot 4 have not made a significant difference to our chances of qualification. A set of good results in this qualification group could set us up firstly to qualify and secondly to ease into Pot 2 which would take out so many possible tricky games for the next world cup.

Is our rise to 29th proof that NostraDelmeus is insane then?

The rankings are laughable anyway, I mean I haven't even heard of Cape Verde Islands, who are one place above us. WTF.

Falling off the back end are Flynn's two defeats v Bulgaria and Switzerland.

Falling off the back end are Flynn's two defeats v Bulgaria and Switzerland. Surely the next few to slip off will be Speed's awful start? (defeats to ROI, England, Scotland) so we might head back up again?

People need to remember we are not the only team in the FIFA rankings. Yes we had some great results but other teams had better results. www.football-rankings.info/2014/10/fifa-ranking-october-2014-final-preview.html 24 Slovakia 861 16 245 <----- 25 Côte d'Ivoire 842 -3 -37 26 Bosnia-Herz 837 -1 -14 27 Ecuador 826 -6 -63 28 Iceland 816 6 170 <----- 29 Austria 810 10 188 <----- 30 Russia 792 -7 -83 31 Tunisia 780 0 79 <----- 32 Denmark 763 -5 -70 33 Cape Verde Is 716 8 112 <----- 34 Wales 715 -5 1
Last month we were 29th, tied with Scotland. This month we are 34th because 5 teams have performed better than we have. Look at the 4th column, that's rise/fall in rankings. Slovakia have jumped 16 places which puts us down one and so on.

Northern Ireland are jumping 28 places, which puts them ahead of the Republic. Insane
The ranking system works. If you don't think it does, I'd like you to come up with a better alternative

If there are 9 groups we will be in pot 3 I think that seems about right at the Moment. An improvement on where we've been seeded recently, that's for sure.

Pot 1 1 Germany 1669 4 Belgium 1388 5 Netherlands 1375 7 France 1191 9 Portugal 1175 10 Spain 1119 11 Italy 1064 12 Switzerland 1063 14 Croatia 1002
Pot 2 18 Greece 946 19 Ukraine 920 20 England 919 21 Romania 876 22 Czech Republic 870 24 Slovakia 861 26 Bosnia-Herz 837 28 Iceland 816 29 Austria 810
30 Russia 792 (Hosts, wont be drawn in a pot)
Pot 3 32 Denmark 763 34 Wales 715
Using the ranking points tool on the FIFA website, if we had beaten Bosnia we'd now be on 860 points which would put us in pot 2 ahead of Bosnia and drop Austria into pot 3.
Belgium are ranked 4th in the world, if we beat them we're in pot 2. To put it into perspective Iceland were a couple of places below us when they played and beat 4th placed Netherlands.
We then have both Israel and Belgium (again) to play next year before the draw takes place in July.
Edit, just realised. Russia are hosts so we're 2nd in pot 3.

According to our friend we have remained at 34. Interesting to see where some of the other teams in our group are as well: 28 USA 836 -5 -26 29 Bosnia-Herzegovina 808 -3 -29 30 Denmark 804 2 41 31 Russia 789 -1 -3 32 Israel 788 13 173 33 Iceland 761 -5 -55 34 Wales 748 0 33 35 Senegal 734 6 99 36 Scotland 729 1 55 37 Ghana 714 -2 29 38 Guinea 698 17 146 39 Cape Verde Islands 693 -6 -23 40 Poland 684 4 63 Israel moved above Wales and close in on Bosnia-Herzegovina. Does any other group have that? Doubt it.

I just can't get over Cape Verde and Guinea- should chuck em in the European qualifying zone for a campaign and then see how good they actually are.

I think these new rankings also show that our group is pretty tough (depite what some seem to think)
Does any other group have 4 teams currently inside the world's top 35?

They go on about Scotland's group but
themselves and Poland are below us and ROI in the 60s
Bosnia, Israel and ourselves are ranked higher than all 3 of them

However, if you look ath the rankings when it was drawn we got pretty lucky at the draw
Bosnia were bottom in Group 1
Belgium below half way in pot 2
Israel 4th in pot 3
Cyprus bottom of pot 6
Andorra near bottom of pot 7
