Back on page two of this thread, a poster called youngdragon posted this in 2010 when we were ranked 111th.
"with the present number of caps and age of alot of our players in a few years say 2016-2018 we should be as a minimum top 20 really looking at top 10"
Fair play to him / her

Maybe it was Brian Flynn?!
I hope the current young crop of 40+ cap players achieve just as much as that generation.

maybe top 10 is slightly over estimating but top 20 is a realistic goal'
I wonder if he/she went on to have a career in the game?

Such a shame so many of them had injury problems, imagine how good an injure free Bale and Ramsey would have been

Or Collison having the kind of career that he had the potential for. Even 'only' 74 caps for Joe Allen feels like we were left short changed.

Add Jonny Williams to that list. Oh for a Luca Modric, never injured and still playing at 38.

29 to 30 for us. Scotland 40 to 48!!! Blimey! Isn’t qualifying for major tournaments supposed to be a good thing.

17th in Europe, need to be careful we don't drop below 20th and wind up 3rd seeds for qualifying.

Unlikely we'll sneak into that top 12. We're chasing Denmark and Austria. Austria have got a fairly straightforward Nations League group.

No chance of that unfortunately...I'm more concerned with dropping below 20th as vvm pointed out. Turkey will be tough and Iceland no push overs. Montenegro I have no idea how that will go

Montenegro I have no idea how that will go Montenegro are in a big slump. Gone are the days of prime Vucinic, Jovetic & Savic. In fact only 1 squad member currently plays in a top flight big 5 league, a fringe player at Lecce. The rest of their squad play all across various other European leagues. Jovetic is their captain but is 34 and playing for Olympiacos now. There's absolutely no reason we shouldn't be beating them home and away

Montenegro I have no idea how that will go There are 12 groups so we would have to go below 24 to drop out of pot 2.Should be ok but we cant go loosing the so called easier games. Getting relegated from league B would put real pressure on getting a host place for the 28 Euros.

Agreed until the last bit, I think they will likely put all 5 host nations in pot 1 regardless for the euro 2028 qualifying draw and probably split pot 2 so we can’t draw the higher ranked teams that were moved down from pot 1 because of it.

Cant see them doing that. It would throw the seedings into chaos. Half the teams normally expecting pot 1 would be in 2. They may restrict the potential hosts from being drawn in the same group, although I'm not sure it such an issue. I think they'll seed it as they usually do but time will tell.

They are gonna try and make it as easy as they can for the home nations to qualify with no automatic spaces. With 12 qualifying groups it does make it easier, England generally pot 1 most the time anyway so gives 7 other biggies pot 1 status still, more than fine and it’s likely 6 runners up will automatically qualify. Don’t forget England and France were both pot 2 for the last euro qualifying.
